Schoolgirls have been left "in tears" after a controversial new uniform rule was enforced at the start of the school year, with furious parents claiming some pupils were stopped from attending lessons.

The row has erupted after Co-op Academies Trust introduced a trousers-only policy across its secondary schools from September.
Some families have refused to accept the change, with pupils at Co-op Academy Failsworth in Oldham arriving for their first day back on Wednesday wearing skirts.

Parents claim that a number of Year 11 girls were not allowed into class, with other pupils affected when they returned on Thursday.

The policy also applies at Co-op Academy Walkden, Co-op Academy Swinton, Co-op Academy North Manchester, Co-op Academy Manchester and Co-op Academy Belle Vue.

I'm surprised by people being angered by this. I remember when (in the early 2000s) girls and their families were fighting to wear trousers, because forcing the girls to wear knee-length skirts all year round was considered sexist and impractical. My school eventually let girls wear trousers in the autumn and winter terms, and I loved that, as I hated being forced into skirts.

From what I understand, the issue is that a large number of girls roll their skirts up to the point that they show their pants. Obviously, that’s not acceptable attire – nothing to do with boys, it wouldn’t be acceptable in an all girls’ schools with only female teachers for teenage girls to be wearing such incredibly short skirts. A school is a workplace.
People who say ‘how dare you blame girls’ is very strange, as it’s not boys who roll up the girls’ skirts, and the ones who are misogynist pricks are unlikely to harass girls more or less because of their clothing.

Making the option simply ‘smart black trousers’ means that girls should be able to find trousers that fit (women of all shapes and sizes manage to wear trousers), but I do think having a calf length skirt that doesn’t lend itself to being rolled should be an option too.

The skirts are not unmodest. The wearer is. If the girls stuck to the uniform then they would still be allowed to wear them.

The ridiculous problems are from girls bored doing their homework.

lots of girls stick to the uniform though. Not every girls rolls it up super short. I certainly didn’t - always jutted out at a wonky angle when I tried so gave up . Why ban it for every girl?

But not every girl was doing that. Why not make the girls who were mis wearing skirts wear trousers and let the others wear skirts? A blanket rule doesn’t take into account the wearer and so by definition the school considers wearing skirts immodest

As soon as uniform shops make them, they'll be in polyester heavy twill. Everything uniform shops make is polyester or poly-blend.

I personally would outlaw logos on school uniforms except for the tie and patches that can be sewn onto blazers and polo shirts. Logos on uniforms and mandatory specific brands (e.g. skirt must be the Trutex a-line in X length) exist purely to keep poor kids out of the school.

Boys don’t look like boys because they wear trousers.

Don't blame the school, blame the girls who refuse to follow rules and keep rolling their skirts up until they're barely more than belts.

Some of the girls I see walking along are borderline obscene, with their arse cheeks showing. It's all very well to say the problem is the boys, but they're teenagers FFS, with hormones raging and under developed brains. They should be allowed to concentrate on their studies without the distraction of girls flashing their arses. It's a learning environment, not a catwalk.

I enjoyed the banter here. It makes a nice change from some of the more serious and worrying threads about at the moment.

I'm now off to iron my skirt for tomorrow. I have the knickers ready to match.

As always, its the few that spoil it for the majority.

But practically, schools cannot ban individuals from wearing skirts. And as you can see from the nonsense spouted on here, it would be considered "victim blaming" if they did. The whole reason schools can't stop the girls rolling skirts up past their bum cheeks is because all too often the parents come marching in accusing the teacher of perving on their teenage daughter.

So if teacher's are not allowed to correct the issue, the school finds a way to prevent the issue all together.

Can you really not see that campaigning for the right to choose trousers isnt the same as being forced to wear trousers?
