Schoolgirls have been left "in tears" after a controversial new uniform rule was enforced at the start of the school year, with furious parents claiming some pupils were stopped from attending lessons.

The row has erupted after Co-op Academies Trust introduced a trousers-only policy across its secondary schools from September.
Some families have refused to accept the change, with pupils at Co-op Academy Failsworth in Oldham arriving for their first day back on Wednesday wearing skirts.

Parents claim that a number of Year 11 girls were not allowed into class, with other pupils affected when they returned on Thursday.

The policy also applies at Co-op Academy Walkden, Co-op Academy Swinton, Co-op Academy North Manchester, Co-op Academy Manchester and Co-op Academy Belle Vue.

My kids school uniform is "grey trousers".

Trousers are so uncomfortable if you have an hourglass figure I hated my school uniform trousers in the 70s but there was such a backlash they were only compulsory for a year. I haven't worn trousers as an adult rarely wear jeans as in haven't owned a pair for 20 years. Forcing girls to wear clothes primarily designed for boys is patently unfair.

We know about biology, but its laughable to make out girls are going to .....

It would be difficult to find smart uniform trousers for curvy girls or those who are short or tall.

I would have killed to be allowed to wear trousers as part of my school uniform, they are so practical, and no need to wear tights in winter, lord I hate tights. However dds school recently introduced trousers as an alternative to skirts and only one or two girls in the whole school wear them. I mean they aren't fabulous trousers, but they are better that the awful a-line skirt. And none of the girls wear skirts outside of school, its all leggings and jeans, I just don't get it.

i have no idea which school you are referring too? And simply because one ( private) school decides to make children uncomfortable while they learn that doesnt mean that all children should be??? undoubtedly the private school will have air conditioning whereas our local school was forced to shut for several days as the temp reached 44 in the assembly hall. Therefore , the Guardian article is relevant.

Even if girls are rolling up their skirts, the problem is boys.

Because boys dont know how to behave women have to adapt, be made to wear clothes that wont "provoke" men / boys.

What a terrible message to young women growing up.

So again the message is to girls growing up you are just too much trouble.

My hope is that a young boy who insists he is a girl starts a legal action say the school is being transphobic in not allowing him to express his true self.

His court case would probably win. But doubtless girls goint to court would lose.

The girls claiming they should wear what they want need to take it up with the girls who have ruined it for everyone by being unable to wear skirts properly.

This is about girls putting their bums and knickers on show. Its not appropriate and no one wants to see it. Teachers spend fruitless hours telling them to wear their skirts properly. Wasted time

It is totally about boys.

Given that you can walk down the street and see women women sheer leggings with only a short top which are far more revealing. Rolling a skirt up is nothing.

The problem is boys and parents who cant bring their sons up to behave properly.

And adults need to stop opting for the easy solution, ie blame girls instead of tacking ingrained misogyny.

I hate to, but I'm coming to agree. Mixed schools are really only an advantage to boys.

Actually, in my school we do tend to have a few heat faints each summer term. It's a small, single form entry primary, and we have 3/4 fainting episodes most summers despite the school size. We have a lot of kids in modest clothing in the school (so not necessarily cultural clothing, but very covered).

It's only ever been girls in the fair few years I've been there and it's only ever our older girls in modest clothing - not most girls by any means, but everyone I remember fainting has been. The combination of jumper, trousers, shirt and head covering does seem to have them fainting (we've had a couple of mums faint on us over the years too in summer). As secondary schools are known for strict rules around jumpers and blazers anyway, I don't think it's a laughable idea that it might lead to overheating to a dangerous degree. (We tend to be begging them to remove clothes due to heat, but for cultural and religious reasons, the older ones prefer to stay in full uniform.)

We spent over a month off uniform this summer, to accommodate a need to be both cool and fully covered to prevent exactly this issue, which isn't going to happen in secondary realistically. I can completely see girls fainting by overheating if they are used to dressing in a cooler way in summer than thick school trousers (because strict uniform rules do not allow for light, wafty linen trousers realistically).

Its nothing to do with boys and their behaviour. Its about ensuring that children, because thats what school girls are, are appropriate dressed and not showing off their bum and underwear.
The woman you make reference to is an adult. I dont think that outfit is appropriate either but she isnt a child, its her responsibility how she presents and what she wears.

Im not a believer that anyone can present how they want and wear what they want, you have to be dressed appropriately in public. Boys with half their arse crack hanging out, with their pants on show - not appropriate, Girls with haif their arse hanging out of their skirt with their pants on show - not appropriate. Its about basic standards of presentation.
