Schoolgirls have been left "in tears" after a controversial new uniform rule was enforced at the start of the school year, with furious parents claiming some pupils were stopped from attending lessons.

The row has erupted after Co-op Academies Trust introduced a trousers-only policy across its secondary schools from September.
Some families have refused to accept the change, with pupils at Co-op Academy Failsworth in Oldham arriving for their first day back on Wednesday wearing skirts.

Parents claim that a number of Year 11 girls were not allowed into class, with other pupils affected when they returned on Thursday.

The policy also applies at Co-op Academy Walkden, Co-op Academy Swinton, Co-op Academy North Manchester, Co-op Academy Manchester and Co-op Academy Belle Vue.

It's probably to stop upskirting etc. Of course, it would be too much trouble to hammer home to the boys respect for girls and mandatory expulsion if they use phones for this? And report to the police, of course, since it is a sexual assault.
I think secondary schools should be single sex, personally. It does wonders for girls' self-esteem and resilience not to have to deal with boys all day.

Loads of women wear trousers everyday. No issue.

Yeah but as an adult female you have choices about how you deal with periods.

As a teen girl I didn’t even have a choice about towels or tampons because we lived miles from shops. Thick tights and a skirt saved my embarrassment a few times when I wasn’t prepared.
I know schools are equipped these days but trousers are still unforgiving of random bleeds.

Boys respect for girls, or girls respect for themselves?

How do you avoid upskirting when I as a driver can see up their skirts without even trying.

Possibly would be a solution to get skirts with braces already built into the fabric, you cant take the braces off so you cant wear the skirt on its own and of course cannot roll it up.

So why is it being standardised as default male? And why are girls being told to moderate male behaviour? Get boys to stop upskirting, rather than get girls to change their behaviour.

Oh pinafore, I couldnt think of the word. Then the length doesnt change.

I'm willing to bet that at least 95% of these poor heat stressed girls own at least one pair of jeans or leggings which they most definitely wear in the summer, without risk of fainting from the summer heat.

Why do some girls feel it’s appropriate to wear skirts the length of their knickers and equally why are their parents not ensuring they are dressed in the correct school uniform and supporting schools?

DD went to a non uniform school along with millions of girls around the world. She wore jeans or shorts every day from age 4-18 without any issue.

Schoolgirls have been rolling hems up since the end of time. First secondary school I was in I didn’t bother, just had knee/calf length skirt. My best friend there constantly tried to roll the waistband and hem up. Second private convent school had an almost ankle length pleated skirt that was nigh on impossible to roll up the waistband but I’m sure some tried.

seeing arse skimming school skirts on teenage girls when I was at school in early 80s onward (55 now). In fact quite a few teenage girls freaked out about their slim skinny legs believing them to be fat, the thighs. Well I did anyway. And I was a size 4-6 naturally. I mean if teenage girls now have enough body confidence to wear arse skimming skirts then all power to them and call me a prude I do not want to see their knickers in skirts that short. And no, I didn’t wear super short skirts or skirts, though did wear “short” skirts and shorts. My mum would’ve killed me if I’d shown my knickers in clothing.

One of mine was a nightmare to find trousers for. She just wasn't the 'right' shape - tiny waist, broad hips.

Your comment about girls/women being asked to conform reminded me of a story earlier this year about a girl's schools that was due to start admitting boys. The uniform included a pink shirt but on the admission of boys, the decision was made to change the uniform shirt to blue.

The judging of young girls on here is bloody awful.

But if girls just adhered to the rules then we wouldn’t even be discussing this.

if girls are so desperate to wear skirts due to periods or fainting or whatever then I agree with another poster to bring back the pinafore (knee length). Then they can’t be hitched. Pinafore or trousers for all.

This isn’t about boys.

girls aren’t following uniform rules. Schools sick of wasting time managing it - solution is trousers.

Girls shouldn't have to go to school with boys because boys pose a sexual assault risk.

And allow them to hitch them up so high it’s all on show. Wonder what the response from people would be then?!

I judge the parents TBH, well those who object to the trousers I mean. That is just feeding the girls with contrariness for something that's eminently sensible for a school uniform in a mixed sex setting.

Remember it is not mandatory to roll your skirt up to your arse, but I really do think the girls who do this are trying to attract attention from the boys. If they wear trousers that won't happen. You can say that is sexist, I don't care, they have a choice and the amount of time spent policing girls crotch visibility is ridiculous.

As for needing twenty different trouser types for different shapes, easily solved with e.g. barrell leg or jog pant versions. When these girls are floating down the High Street on a Saturday afternoon to meet and gaggle with their mates, none of them are wearing crotch revealing skirts, oh no, so they do like trousers after all!

The problem with pinafores is that they make your whole torso too hot.

Its not sexist to say girls are showing off their knickers and bums for the boys. Its a fact. Its human nature but its also human responsbility for the grown ups to take charge and say, no you're not doing that. So trousers it is.

Not if they just have bands/braces to hold the skirt bit up, except they're not detachable so the skirt hangs at the length it is and cant be moved upwards

In any case, yet again, a solution found, but a barrier is put in place.

Meanwhile, my all-girl school refused to let the girls wear trousers unless the girl was in a wheelchair until the current decade. The girls campaigned for trousers continuously from before my time until finally the governors gave in. That's a minimum of 35 years fighting for what these girls are rejecting.

I hated it. Chub rub and the "razor cuts or bullying about leg hair" dilemma in the summer, itchy tights that laddered in the winter, having to worry about how I sat all the time, and having ice blocks for feet for most of the year.

I would have loved trousers.

I had stretchy bootcut style trousers at school. Really comfy and stopped the thigh rub from wearing skirts.

I'm sure that most parents don't know how to sew a pinafore dress, nor own a sewing machine.
