Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Our friend here thinks the quote about “throwing open the doors to all men” is that match.

This?

"When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he's a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside."

How does that parallel "Mexican's are rapists"? I'm not seeing it. If anything, it's the exact opposite. It appears to suggest that if it were only the men who feel they are women who were admitted to "bathrooms and changing rooms" for women, that would be fine. It suggests that JKR thinks that the "true-trans" are not the problem, it's those who aren't true-trans are the ones who must not be admitted.

I certainly don't agree with that - I think that all men should stay about, regardless of whether they're a danger or not, purely because they're men. I think that JKR thinks that too.

But as evidence of transphobia, that quote doesn't work at all. It's evidence of a pro-trans opinion.

“I thought you feminists didn’t like sexist stereotypes? You can’t have it both ways

Yep.

That is exactly what using such an inaccurate to be a false description of 'stereotypes' allows people with weak arguments to twist and distract with. We know, of course, that this is why the positioning has been used.

I think her view has evolved since then but it just goes to show no concessions are acceptable, only 100% capitulation. Which realisation has probably contributed to the more hardline position both she and many gender critical feminists adopt now.

As to why northernlights thinks it’s a valid comparison, this is a person who thinks “trans women” must look female because trans porn is popular with men 🤷‍♀️

I’m confused! What’s the difference between “trans” and “true-trans?” Are “trans” faking it?

I have read that, but the claims of transphobia levelled at JKR don't leverage or depend on her possible recognition of that distinction. I suspect it's too subtle to be noticed by people who were more interested in lighting their brands and sharpening their pitchforks.

I'm still hoping someone can point me towards a JKR "Mexicans are rapists" comment. It was posed earlier as a direct analogue for why she should be considered transphobic, and when I asked for an example I was called stupid. I may be stupid - but I'd still like to see an example.

Here is the AI take on "true-trans". Basically it's old school transexuals who have gender dysphoria & full surgery. The TRAs don't like the gatekeeping. In their eyes it's sufficient for Bob to say he is now Susan before he can use the Ladies.

"True Transsexual" / Truscum: In some online discourse and historical medical contexts, variations of the phrase relate to "transmedicalism" or truscum (sometimes mockingly abbreviated as T3, meaning "more Trans Than Thou"). This describes an exclusionary viewpoint held by some individuals who believe a person must experience specific medical transitions or severe gender dysphoria to be considered "truly" transgender. Mainstream modern psychology and advocacy organizations widely reject this narrow definition, recognizing that gender identity and transition steps are deeply personal and varied

This thread is about JKR's transphobia AND you aren't going to escape from being exposed that easy.

OK, I'll bite - give us some examples, please. Direct quotes, not things filtered through another's interpretation.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for that! So the TRAs can’t agree.
It’s farcical!

Helleofabore · 16/08/2026 12:50

This is not coherent because it is also not accurate.

This is where the misuse of the term 'stereotype' which has been used in that poorly written article becomes more apparent. A statement that refers to safeguarding principles where all male people are excluded from a female single sex provision is not a 'stereotype'. It is a discussion about how to protect female people from male people who are the sex category that causes harm to female people. That 'harm' is not a stereotype.

The fear that a large number of transgender women are just men who want to be able to use women-only spaces unchecked is a harmful stereotype that paints trans people as predators instead of just human beings who want to live their lives.”

Just to repeat, this statement misuses the term 'stereotype'.

The only commonality the basic safeguarding principle has in common with a stereotype is that it is applied to an entire segment of a population. In this case, MALE people. All male people are treated as if they all individually have the same risk profile of causing harm to female people because there is no way of telling which ones are never going to harm female people.

Of course, all that focus on that 'stereotype' term distracts from another very important safeguarding principle, that of safeguarding protections not only being needed to protect female people from physical harm. There are many other harms that female people need safeguarding in place to minimise:

It is also not just about physical risk to safety. There are many types of harms that female people need female single sex provisions to be safeguarded against:

Harms include:
-Rape and sexual assault.
-Violence.
-Sexual abuse that is not rape or sexual assault.
-Sexual abuse that also includes solo sexual acts or using the experience in future sexual acts.
-Any other abuse that may include verbal abuse, intimidation in any way etc, this includes inappropriate questions and comments.
-A male person's presence where female people need privacy and dignity.
-A male person's presence where female people need to feel safe from any male person's presence (over the age of about 8 years old).
-Female people self-excluding knowing that there may be a male person accessing that provision.
-Female people not having the freedom to discuss the issues that cause them distress, concern, or that they need to talk about because a male person is present.
-Female children (and female adults) learning to have no or too low personal boundaries because they have been taught that male people are female people and that they should ignore and overcome feelings of discomfort.

Narrowing the discussion to sex and violence offences does not remove these other harms from consideration for female single sex spaces and vice versa. They are all important.

The discussion of that poorly written article distracts from the wide range of harm that female people can experience with the presence of male people in their female single sex provision. The misuse of the term 'stereotypes' is really just there to allow a moral judgement to be invoked as part of that emotional reasoning and I still believe, emotional coercion, the article writer is attempting to use to convince people that JK Rowling is the problem and is hateful.

It's not just about safeguarding either.

It's about the physical requirements and needs of women being slightly different from men. This is everything from presentation and symptoms of health care issues to the size of photos, furniture and cars to reflect female bodies.

None of this is transphobic.

A male police officer will always need different protective equipment to a female officer regardless of how they identify. This doesn't take away from their ability to do their job. They may have different strengths and weaknesses based on bodies and experiences driven by their bodies.

Not of this is 'good' or 'bad'. Just different.

I'm still waiting for something written by JKR that matches Trump's "Mexicans are rapists" comment.

Did anyone find anything?

@Helleofabore
Why can’t women use the term biological sex? Biologically we are different from men.
(I’m nowhere near as knowledgeable as most of you are.)

Edited

Because if we were to define women by our biology, this would exclude the Men Who Call Themselves Women. Even the ones like India Willoughby and the Fragrant Dr Upton who will swear until the cows come home that they're 'real women' and even - in Windy's case - apparently claims he has a cervix. I can only assume he keeps it on the mantlepiece as a decorative feature or maybe as a pet.

Anyway, such definitions would make The Men Who Call Themselves Women sad and/or angry so we mustn't be allowed to refer to 'biological women'.

SidewaysOtter · 16/08/2026 14:24

I see the monitors are out in force Hmm Presumably the lack of coherent argument has lapsed into their usual fall back position of 'controlling what the wims are allowed to talk about'.

I still both laugh and boggle at David Lammy saying earnestly that he believed there was a procedure to get one [a cervix] fitted.

I don't know if prostates are removed during gender reassignment surgery, it's something I try not to think about...

The bottom line - pun fully intended - is that no amount of surgery makes a man a woman. He can have everything removed and/or inverted but will remain a male right down to cellular level. And the large majority of trans-identified men (i.e. men who call themselves women) don't have any surgery at all. IIRC, 'Beth' Upton had had no surgery at all but claimed in court under oath that he was a "biological and a woman therefore I'm a biological woman".
