Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Misrepresentation of the group as delusional & predatory just like it is to misrepresent women as a fixed set of behaviours. And no amount of disclaimers about not believing trans people are not dangerous is going to alter the fact JKR is speaking out of both sides of her mouth.

JKR doesn't believe, has never said and does not represent all trans people as delusional and predatory.

It's just as much a stereotype that no trans people are dangerous, as that all trans people are dangerous.

Going on, whether some, any or no trans identifying men are predatory, delusional, or dangerous is irrelevant to whether they should use services for women. The reason they shouldn't, which is the point J K Rowling makes very clearly, is because they're men and not women.

No men should use services for women, neither the predatory dangerous men nor the lovely, harmless, safe men, regardless of whether they consider themselves trans, and whether or not they consider themselves women. EIther way, they're all men and women's services and facilities are not for them.

Gender is the broad social and cultural system of roles, behaviors, and expectations tied to sex. Gender identity is a specific part of gender: a person's deep, internal sense of being a man, woman, both, or neither. Gender is the whole category, while gender identity is your 'personal truth inside'

Lovely, but so what?

How would it be possible to provide services for people based on personal truth?

People having personal truth doesn't negate the fact that sex is important for safeguarding and providing services and opportunities.

An individuals truth is irrelevant to most other people, whereas their sex is important.

You are confusing two different concepts: Gender & gender self identification. Just because gender identification is arbitrary doesn't mean gender doesn't exist. Gender is independent of self identification.

What are you in terms of gender objectively? Sounds non binary.

Self identification means just that. A subjective choice that's reliant on values & beliefs. But just because gender self identification is arbitrary doesn't mean gender on its own doesn't exist.

"gender" is just so boring and simple. i'm not "non-binary", just a woman with certain interests and traits. the spectrum of masculine vs feminine is such a boring and arbitrary way to look at a human being, and it's just that, just one way, and an ideological one at that.

it also really doesn't make sense to me how self-identification can differ so much from the apparent real gendered soul I have. shouldn't there be some formal test instead of self-id if it's so important.

Using plausible deniability as cover to spread harmful stereotypes is a well worn tactic.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. […] They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people”

Trump (Time Magazine 2015).

So, what do you think of Andrew Balcer in a women's prison?

JKR is transphobic because ... Donald Trump?

This is conflating two separate issues: Identity & competing rights that result from that where there are already exceptions in law for special circumstances that require rights a balancing test depending on the circumstances & cultural expectations.

Maybe start a thread on it given its an entirely separate issue to advancing harmful stereotypes.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2026 02:27

How is the quote relevant to whether men should be in women’s spaces?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2026 02:28

“Trans women” are men. Not all men are predators, but some are.

Explain to me the parallel between what you quoted from Trump, and something - anything - JKR has written. Please quote from her, don't just say what you think or "understand" she meant, but use her words.

Not all females engage in typical sexed behaviour but many do.

Spot the stereotype?

It doesn't have to be just like a person's professed religious or political affiliation can't be.

Northernlightsss · 16/08/2026 02:25

because you are questioning the stereotypes. but is it wrong?

we have violent, rapist men in women's prisons claiming to be trans...

I mean, JKR isn't even spreading a stereotype. She's just talking about how predatory awful men will label themselves as trans. and trans ideology is allowing it... maybe fix the ideology and get men out of women's prisons, and there won't be people spreading the idea of these harmful "stereotypes"

Northernlightsss · 16/08/2026 02:36

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2026 02:34

We've done this. Its not possible to explain some concepts to those with 'limitations' in understanding.

Northernlightsss · 16/08/2026 02:34

doesn't have to be what? correct??? then how can we trust that any self-identified transwoman is literally a woman?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2026 02:37

Exactly, if men weren’t accessing women’s spaces this issue would mostly disappear.
