Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Calling transgender women "men pretending to be women" is transphobic by default

They aren't women. Human beings as a species cannot change sex so they cannot become women. So they are men pretending to be women.

Reality. So transphobic.

Is it the “pretending”? What else would you call it, given that we don’t believe they actually are women?

Over the last few weeks ive learnt that men pretending to be women is good, men pretending to be TW is bad.

It's what they're doing though isn't it? They are larping women through the performance of female stereotypes

so I dont give a shit if they think that's transphobic

i think it's bloody offensive for any man to think he can reduce being a woman to a series of stereotypes he can act out

why does the man's feelings trump mine?

Calling transgender women "men pretending to be women" is transphobic by default

Why?

A man is an adult human of the male sex.
A woman is an adult human of the female sex.

A transwoman is an adult human of the male sex who wishes to be perceived as a woman and may take various possible steps, some of which are semi-effective, to encourage that false perception.
Their wish to be perceived as a woman may be deeply and sincerely felt, they absolutely have the right to do whatever they wish to project that desired perception, but that doesn't make such efforts any less of a pretence and it does not make them female. Their status as a valid human being who has every right to equality and dignity is not in question but they are still not female, and it is neither hatred nor transphobia to say so.

No one has ever attempted to make a rational explanation of why it should be considered hatred/transphobia without descending into irrational sexist bollocks that has no intellectual rigour.

TPA Read what she said about Imane Khelif, a young Muslim woman in whose country it's illegal to be trans. Look at how she publicly treated her, based upon little more than rumours and Khelif's appearance.
Khelif is a massive inspiration and fantastic female role-model for young girls in Algeria. They love her for that.
JKR's targeting of a brown Muslim woman has been noted by people normally uninterested in her anti-trans comments. She isn't a doctor, or on the Olympic Committee. It's horrific what she's put that young woman (who's lost plenty of matches to other cis women btw) and others through.

Oh dear, TPA, now you've really done it! Bringing up Imane Khelif was an own goal.

Khelif is not trans, never has been trans, has never been considered trans.

Khelif is not a woman. Even Khelif's own 'management' and medical team have admitted that he has some 'chromosomal anomalies' which boil down to having the chromosome that make a person a man, not a woman.

Khelif has failed eligibility tests in the past, but at the time he took part in the Paris Olympics the IOC was not carrying out any tests: a passport that said you were female is all that was needed.

Khelif is indeed held up as a 'fantastic role model for young girls in Algeria', which when you think about it is very sad for young girls in Algeria - role models who are actually female would be much better wouldn't you agree?

I believe [ not a commonly shared believe, but one that I've shared on this board before] that Khelif was mistakenly IDed as a girl at birth and I believe that he was brought up as a girl.

I think it's disgraceful and unethical that when the medical people around him had incontrovertible proof that he was a male with a male DSD, they didn't surround him with the care and support he needed to come to terms with the reality of his biological sex.

Instead, they - and it goes right up to the top in politics and national sporting bodies in his country - pushed him to continue living a lie, so he could 'be a role model', win gold for his country, etc etc.

Of course he should have done the decent thing and stopped boxing against women, but he was too caught up in the gears of the machine that needed him to be a woman, although it knew he was not. 'Being a woman' was also his, and his family's, ticket out of poverty.

What happened to his threatened lawsuit against JKR et al.? That didn't get very far, did it?

Oh and by the way: Khelif lost to women at lower weights, before he moved up to the 66kg category. The fact that he has been through male puberty meant that the extra kilos he put on between the Tokyo and Paris Olympics were mostly muscle, making him a very different physical threat at 66kg [welterweight] than at 57-60kg [lightweight].

Building his body up to 66kg also emphasised typically male physical characteristics which were less obvious when he was younger and boxing at the lower weight. At 66kg, he looked like the man he is.

edited for spelling. Also to specify 'Paris Olympics' as IK also boxed in the Tokyo Olympics.

Edited

Excellent post. Consider this picture, which puts it beyond question that the people around Khelif believe him to be male, because no Muslim woman would be carried like this on the shoulders of a man.

Well that's the truth.

If you think that's 'transphobic' I suggest you take it up with Mother Nature. It's not any of our faults that human beings can't change sex.

You’re a woman so obviously you are doing the “identifying” wrongly. Better ask one of these newfangled women.

Coldwetlettuce · 14/08/2026 18:52

It’s because she’s one of the few famous people who are brave enough to risk their careers and personal lives by being outspoken about what they believe in. There are plenty of truly transphobic people out there who wish harm on trans people, seek to bully them etc but they are not in the public eye or not in it enough for there to be collective hate about them. The TRAs love to hate JKR cos everyone knows who she is and hating on her brings them all together 🙄

So were all transphobic then aren’t we? The whole world. Because if the very definition of transwoman isn’t ‘men pretending to be women’ what the hell is it? Because they are men, who like to pretend they’re women, but they’re doing nothing more than pretending because it’s physically and scientifically impossible for them to BE women.

The interesting thing about @MaRhodes post is that she also knows that 'transwomen' are men pretending to be women.

But she thinks its transphobic to say it.

So let that sink in. 'Transphobia' is when we speak the truth out loud.

That's the very definition of Orwellian.

Of course it is.
I wish I understood the thrill they get out of them. As one of those boring old fashioned biological women, whose periods this year have gone utterly haywire I loath having to carry the fuckers around with me all the time "just in case".

Obviously I'm just not woman-ing correctly.

But surely you experience gender euphoria when you can offer something from your stash to another woman?

That’s great, I guess you can make a convincing argument for why people should believe a group of men should be considered women, then, @Slightyamusedandsilly?

That's an easy one. Because they say so! How dare us uppity women not take them at their word.

We wouldn't be 'obsessed' by trans if:
it hadn't come out of almost nowhere
If it didn't disportionately impact vulnerable teens and young people
It didn't bugger young people's bodies up forever, in some cases leaving them infertile or unable to orgasm etc
we didn't have intact men wanting to be in women's refuges (when they are stronger than we are and can rape us)
we didn't have intact men wanting to be in women's prisons (when they are stronger than we are and can rape us)
we didn't have intact men wanting to be in women's toilets and changing rooms (when they are stronger than we are and can rape us)
we didn't have men wanting to be in women's sports (when they are stronger than we are and will take medals, awards and scholarships from deserving and highly talented women)
if so many institutions hadn't rolled over to noisy men and removed women's hard-one single-sex spaces etc
we hadn't had about a decade of NO DEBATE TERFS SHOULD DIE IN A GREASE FIRE when we tried to express our concerns

We don't like it and we're just trying to get back to where we were about 15 years ago.

Many of us resent the massive waste of our energy and money, and the abuse women suffer, and the suffering of women who have lost jobs and friends, just so we can live once again in a society that understands that, the small proportion of people with DSDs aside (all of whom are either men or women anyway), that there are male people built to produce small gametes and female people built to produce large gametes and gestate infants.

HTH.

Excellent post. Thank you.

Beats me! Once in my life I was asked by a colleague if I had a tampon and when I offered what I had she said she didn't like that type. Fair enough! It's nothing something I ever wanted to talk about, to be frank, and fortunately it's all behind me now. Menopause has its points!

Shortshriftandlethal · 14/08/2026 20:22

I've given up being remotely interested in why people might think that JK Rowling, or anyone else, is " transphobic".

Experience has taught me that people who launch such accusations are talking nonsense; based on wilful ignorance, and are mostly concerned with being seen as righteous by their chosen tribe - and conforming to the edicts of that group identity.

Even people I imagined to be of reasonable intelligence have be-clowned themselves, when it became apparent, very early on, that not one had taken the trouble to read her original, whole piece in full. Instead they had its message and meaning mediated by others on on-line platforms, and were, therefore, not capable of even the most rudimentary critical analysis of what exactly it was they disagreeed with in what she said.

Nobody with any decency or integrity could have read her words with an open heart or mind and not agreed. Therefore I conclude that they have no integrity, and political conformity is their most pressing value.
