Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

So were all transphobic then aren’t we? The whole world. Because if the very definition of transwoman isn’t ‘men pretending to be women’ what the hell is it? Because they are men, who like to pretend they’re women, but they’re doing nothing more than pretending because it’s physically and scientifically impossible for them to BE women.

I guess some people get a little offended by the word 'pretend' - even if that is what they are doing. 'Imagining' themselves to be women is how I personally would phrase it.

What individual men imagine it is like to be a woman, or rather what the specific contours of their imaginal/fantasy image are, is usually very apparent in the presentational style.

I must be doing something wrong as I’ve never been asked. What is the protocol?

Edited

I did have to ask someone once. I was attending a day-clinic appointment at a hospital and reaised suddenly that I did (joys of unpredictability in perimenopause after a lifetime of being regular as clockwork). I flagged down a passing nurse and quietly said "I find myself unexpectedly in need of a tampax, please can you help" and she showed me to where there was a stash of freebies (in a cubicle behind a "staff only" locked door). Obviously I wouldn't have asked someone male, even of they were wearing a dress.

You announce it loudly so everyone can stand back and admire the fact that you're a woman.

I see my error, I never talk to anyone when I use women’s toilets.

Because she supports KJK who has said some of the most repugnant garbage I’ve ever seen.

'In an attempt to demonstrate her understanding of where transgender people are coming from, Rowling even says she too might have considered transitioning had the option been available to her as a teenager. “The allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge, “ she writes. “If I’d found community and sympathy online that I couldn’t find in my immediate environment, I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he’d have preferred.”

The belief that gender identity is a phase, a choice, or something that is influenced by other people is a stereotype that minimizes the struggles of anyone who experiences gender dysphoria. Transitioning isn’t easy but Rowling seems to be saying people can choose to transition on a whim simply because they think it’s more convenient to be one gender than another.

In her essay, Rowling goes on to reveal that she is a domestic and sexual abuse survivor and those experiences have made her even more focused on biology, “out of solidarity with the huge numbers of women who have histories like mine, who’ve been slurred as bigots for having concerns around single-sex spaces.”
Referring to the debate around public washrooms in particular, Rowling claims she’s concerned for the safety of cis women and girls. “When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman—and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones—then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside.”

Throughout her essay, Rowling talks about how easy it is for a biological man to become a woman in the eyes of the law and how potentially dangerous that could be for cis women. The fear that a large number of transgender women are just men who want to be able to use women-only spaces unchecked is a harmful stereotype that paints trans people as predators instead of just human beings who want to live their lives.

In her attempt to defend herself against the TERF label, Rowling just ended up providing more solid evidence that she is one. She works hard to disguise her views as feminism and genuine concern for the wellbeing of all women, but relies heavily on a number unsubstantiated opinions about trans people that the community has been fighting against for years. Rowling sees herself as highly educated on transgender issues but she still fails to see how her views—and her insistence on using her huge platform to promote them—are hurting transgender people."

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 14/08/2026 05:40

Her entire Twitter account is transphobia.

All of it. Calling trans women fetishists, claiming trans guys are all autistic mentally ill survivors (!!), taking the piss out of individual trans and nb people, pushing the 'trans away the gay' lie...only someone who is themselves transphobic refuses to see it.

She's also made some absolutely hateful, repulsive comments about asexual people.

Dismissing her behaviour as 'standing up for women' is deeply disingenuous. That doesn't explain why she reposted a thoughtful article about how a nb parent defined themself with nasty, disparaging comments, to give just one example.

All from a woman who employed a domestic abuser, refused to fire him, defended her decision and ignored the DV groups who asked her to reconsider.

Her attitude towards trans people is extremely consequential when they are suffering very real violence - particularly in schools.

She has reposted Islamophobic content, replied approvingly to obvious fascists and denied that trans people were killed during the Holocaust. She hasn't distanced herself from KJK or any other Islamophobic, racist anti-trans people.

She even defended that hateful, racist danger Linehan.

I'm aware asking 'what JKR has said that's so transphobic' is rarely done sincerely, but just in case: read her own words. Read, if you can stomach it, what she and her cronies (inc that worrying bloke who runs a trans woman parody account) say about trans women's bodies.

Read what she said about Imane Khelif, a young Muslim woman in whose country it's illegal to be trans. Look at how she publicly treated her, based upon little more than rumours and Khelif's appearance.

Khelif is a massive inspiration and fantastic female role-model for young girls in Algeria. They love her for that.

JKR's targeting of a brown Muslim woman has been noted by people normally uninterested in her anti-trans comments. She isn't a doctor, or on the Olympic Committee. It's horrific what she's put that young woman (who's lost plenty of matches to other cis women btw) and others through.

The evidence is all there. Bigots don't get to say they aren't bigots, that's for their targets to name.

Interesting. What do you think of "men presenting as women" ?

I consider them to be women if they identify as women

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 14/08/2026 20:48

KinderOfKinder · 14/08/2026 10:02

Absolutely spot on.

I'm not entirely convinced JKR's behaviour goes into actual, verifiable phobia, but the (abundant) evidence is very, very clear; she constantly and consistently (and, quite possibly, pathologically) sneers at minority groups and uses her considerable fame and reach to punch downward. Those are not qualities that a moral, decent human being should ever exhibit.

That she also, genuinely, does spend some of her enormous wealth in supporting women's groups - which is to be rightly lauded - does not, in my view and the view of many, absolve her from accountability of the hateful, pernicious shit she spews.

funny that

But that's just silly isn't it?

What does 'identify as' mean? I can 'identify' as a cat, japanese, disabled, six foot tall, a billionaire.

It wouldn't make any of that true.

thats nice dear meanwhile back on planet reality they're men

do you think TW should be advised to get their prostate checked given that they're men or should we just not bother in case it's a reminder that they're in fact men

Pingponghavoc · 14/08/2026 20:53

So we shouldnt use the word pretend because they arent pretending? They really are women.

So a woman is whatever a man imagines it is.

Why? What is this "woman" that they are?

It’s such a mystery. I’m a woman but I’ve never “identified” (whatever that means) as a woman. I just know that I’m a woman. It’s a fact.

MaRhodes · 14/08/2026 20:48

That's interesting - may I ask - why?
Don't you have your own mind, your own intelligence, your own critical faculties? Do you always go along with what people say, even if it's demonstrably inaccurate?
Do you not think that there's something basically odd about somebody 'identifying' as something that they obviously and provably are not?

Tzika · 14/08/2026 21:36

Stinkybooks · 13/08/2026 22:22

Do you have more examples Tzika?
I think she is right regarding your first example - women who identify as men shouldnt be having children. They've decided their body is abhorrent, they want to be men - being pregnant, giving birth and the initial months of raising a baby is the No 1 gender affirming experience a woman can have. If they SO desparately want to be "men" they shouldnt even think of having children.
And its 100% not fair to bring children into that environment anyway - brainwashing a child from birth into the cult. Awful idea.

If you want something she said how about the time she responds to a call for boycott by suggesting someone kill their dog?

@Northernlightsss from your post yesterday at 22:46
In her attempt to defend herself against the TERF label, Rowling just ended up providing more solid evidence that she is one.

You are conflating the term TERF which is an acronym that needs some unpacking, with being definitionally the same as being transphobic. This is far from true in any rational meaning of the words involved.

TERF as an acronym is used as a nasty slur. However, its meaning is a Feminist (yes JKR is a feminist) whose Radical (meaning "root" ie based on the root principles of what it means to be feminist, that is concerned with the rights and wellbeing of female people) understanding says that there is no way for male peple to be included in the category of female people.

It's an ideological mistake to frame this as trans-exclusionary. It is male-exclusionary. Feminism is concerned with the rights and wellbeing of all female people, regardless of their gender identity.

But it is not transphobic to hold this position. JKR has certainly repeatedly provided solid evidence that her feminism excludes males. The slur for this opinion is indeed TERF but that does not prove transphobia.

One of the many many tedious things about TRA is their determination to suddenly behave like 5 year olds who have never heard of satire or sarcasm over every utterance of JKR

i can't imagine how they function in reality if they behave ad if clear satire & sarcasm is 100% serious

I'm worried about the owls - do you think JKR meant that we should burn actual owls along with our pet dogs, or did she just mean anything with a picture of an owl on it?
