I can’t wait to see who drafts my girl Enes Kanter Freedom. 😂

In a video, the former New York Knicks and Boston Celtics star said: 'After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect.

'If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.

'My team and I have carefully examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and governing framework surrounding self-identification and inclusion. Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft in April 2027.”

”See you at training camp.”

Completely support him, I mean her.

All the other draftees just need to train harder, right?

Alert Thanks to Sophie and the guys aiming to join the WBNA.

WBNA are having a meeting next week to discuss what a woman is.

That is going to be a very special meeting.

Engelbert: WNBA to continue talks about transgender athletes next week

Engelbert wrote that the league will "always approach this topic thoughtfully, respectfully, and in alignment with the longstanding values of our league. Second, our player eligibility rules, unlike the eligibility rules of some other leagues and governing bodies, are collectively bargained. Lastly, preserving the integrity of our game and ensuring fair competition will always remain among the league's highest priorities."

The league's collective bargaining agreement states that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA," but it does not include any more specific language about gender identity or sex assigned at birth. On Friday, two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, saying they identify as women.

"We recognize that this is a complex and nuanced topic, and we will continue to have important conversations with all of you and the Players Association in the weeks and months ahead," Engelbert said in the memo. "We also plan to convene additional discussions and offer listening sessions for any team leaders who would like to participate. Your perspectives and feedback are invaluable, and I appreciate those who have already reached out to share their thoughts."

But, but - it's so nuanced and complex. How on earth will they be able to work out who should participate in the women's league when there are men on this planet to accommodate?

#sadtimes.

fromorbit · 08/08/2026 20:30

Royce White

I haven't even been publicly trans for 72 hours and I'm already getting so much hate.

I just want to hoop with my girls in my feminine era! Why can't y'all be happy for me?

I know right.

The WBNA has been going for thirty years since 1996.

It is worth 5.4 billion.

It has had countless games with thousands of players involved.

Yet with all that no-one has ever known what a woman is in Women's basketball. This a TOUGH question. Glad they will sort it soon. Hope there plenty of men in the meeting no way they can work it out without male input.

Well quite. If they want to know how to take forward the women's game they have to ask the men for their manly advice. This issue is simply too complex for women to work out by themselves.

HousePlantEmergency · 08/08/2026 20:45

"I'm a young Black, hopefully United States Senator that would like a fair chance to participate as a sometimes-identifying-as-a-transgender-woman athlete,"

White's announcement came hours after Kanter Freedom's

I just love it.

"Enes has now said she's a woman," Riley Gaines wrote on X. "If (ESPN) covers this (unlikely), and doesn't refer to Enese as the beautiful woman she is, then they're invalidating her entire existence. Essentially equivalent to genocide."

😂😂😂😂

Surely this is going to grind to a halt now.
It's all so blindingly absurd.

The TRA meltdowns are being met with a shrug and 'it's your rules'.

It's glorious.

Delicious!

This made me laugh out loud in an incredibly unfeminine way.

He's clearly a better woman than I am!

I've been pissing myself for the past 24hrs.

Of course, what they <really> mean, is that they're getting together to try and thrash out what/who women are while simultaneously creating a definition where anyone can come along and redefine things.
Is this another Me Too movement?
Women, and certain men saying "me too"?

Mmmnotsure · Yesterday 01:02

That Royce White interview. 😄 It works so well with the questions being posed to him.

How do you think the women players in the WNBA will feel about this?
Oh, I think they’re going to have nightmares, as they should. I’m 260/265 lbs, 6 foot 8…

If you make it to the WNBA do you plan to use the women’s locker room and all that other stuff?
I mean, of course. I don’t want to be discriminated against. I mean, come on - why wouldn’t I use the women’s locker room?

What happens if you go undrafted and no one signs you, though?
Oh, well then I have to file a discrimination lawsuit, right? I mean, that’s ridiculous. We’re going to have to have a huge legal battle about discrimination if I can’t play.

If it's OK for Veronica Ivy (currently cheating women out of places in Canadian golf) it must also be good for Enes Kanter Freedom.

Thanks for highlighting this.

On the topic of cycling, what happened to the male cyclist who wanted to cycle for Great Britain - I can't remember his name and my Google search didn't find it- his mum was just as delusional.

Emily Bridges. I'm not sure what he's up to now though.

This is a game changer. At last!

Nothatisall · Yesterday 09:26

I for one think they’re stunning and brave for coming out of retirement, to finally be their true selves and play on the women’s team.

I’m not sure why so many people who ordinarily support a self selecting group of men doing this are getting upset. It is a mystery why having to play by their own rules upsets and enrages them so much, perhaps they need to educate themselves.

Looking forward to seeing a WMBA team as progressive and inclusive as the flying bats. Hopefully a few more of these newly declared women will step up to play / coach.

With a bit of luck these players will show those bigots that it’s feelings matter most in women’s competitive sport. You go girls!

I see fairness isn’t mentioned in the WNBPA statement with their other lofty aims.

They say

Justice
Equity

Thats what’s I’d get them on

I foresee the creation of a new gender incoming, à la Sturgeons’s ‘rapist gender’. Obviously it should be called Baller gender 🏀

So how many have we got now?

Enes Freedom
Royce White
Adam Francisco

PersonIrresponsible · Yesterday 14:31

For one, I can't wait to see him/her in killer heels! And I'm loving the attention and ridicule it is bringing.

But another part of me is so sad that we have to wait for the men to speak up and parody it so that it gets taken seriously.

Until then it seems like women must suffer endless vilification and pressure to STFU.

This is where I am. I'm angry that it's taking Men to get the WNBA to clarify what their definition of the W in WNBA means but this is on Women. We are where we are because too few Women are prepared to risk anything standing up for actual biological Womens rights.
As someone who came to this via Sport (thanks Caster) it's disappointing that it has take 17 years and the intervention of Men to even get to this point.
Tennis is now using a cheek swab, nothing short of the same in the WNBA should be acceptable.
I'm certain there are numerous players in the WNBA that have the SRY gene and, in this case, I'd like to see that as enough to exclude them.
No exceptions for CAIS or Swyers in Basketball.
