The future of gender ideology

Is anyone else feeling really pessimistic about the future of women’s sex-based rights?

I know the UK has been doing better than many other countries in pushing back against gender ideology (although there is still a long way to go), but it feels like much of the rest of the Western world has already been captured by it, both culturally and legally.

Looking 50 years into the future, I honestly worry that most Western countries will have moved to self-ID, with only a few exceptions remaining. Hopefully the UK is able to stand firm, but I’m not even confident of that especially if all of the western world has fallen.

I know the gender ideology movement is never going to disappear. It will continue to control universities, many industries, and parts of society. There will also always be a significant number of people who either support, or simply don’t see a problem with, males accessing women’s spaces if they identify as women.

I wonder if others feel the same — that this is a temporary cultural moment that will eventually shift, or whether these changes are likely to become permanent.

Nope. Feeling really positive about the direction of travel, despite the seemingly endless numbers of activists who start threads or join threads trying to convince us it's all going to pot.

We have the law on the side of rights and sanity. Gender ideology is on its way out, to be replaced with something equally as bizarre, and no doubt women will have to deal with that as well! But, we will!

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm sure you'll be glad to know that some of us at least are undeterred.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only cynic. 😄

I live in one of the EU countries where self-ID and #bekind reign - thank you in advance for all theFlowerss I know will be coming my way🙁

And yet in the media... there was an interview with a sports coach the other day in which he talked about the importance of training programmes specifically tailored for girls, taking account of their different biology, e.g. factoring in periods.

There was a health programme which emphasised the difference between gender and sex, and that gender equality mustn't eclipse the fact that women's bodies are different, and therefore girls grow up with a different life experience..

A discussion on women's sports commenting on the number of foot injuries caused to women's footballers when they had to wear boys' football boots, instead of boots specifically designed for the different structure of women's feet..

There's the [cover your ears, TPA] ideology, and then there's people's everyday experience, and the recognition of biological sex seems to be thriving despite years of legislation denying it.

That gives me hope.

So many words making so little sense.

Repeating the same emotional BS with very little evidence to back up your claims, whilst ignoring all of the threats and violence that TRAs put forward.

Remember that the truth will set you free.

Since there is no "gender ideology" - just individual trans people trying to live their lives, who will keep being born - thank you for this.

I'd really like a world where people entirely ignorant about being trans stop making my son's life worse, and he is safer.

No amount of discussing ridiculous Trans Under The Bed conspiracy theories will ever improve women's lives. Only campaigns against male violence will do that.

We need consent education, actual consequences for sex offenders, and to address rape culture.

The GC movement has succeeded only in making itself vastly unpopular. Targeting the appearance and existence of trans people is not activism. Banning trans women from rolling pastry, and a few Girl Guides from having fun with their mates, has revealed its true colours.

The far right love terfs for a reason. It gets to argue that women are useless at everything compared to men and need the protection of strongmen.

The appalling behaviour of so many terfs - you only have to look at the targeting of Imane Khelif for an example - is vastly off-putting to ordinary people. Discussing children's genitals, mocking asexual people, doxxing trans women and making horrific ableist comments about people who use walking aids or who are autistic - yes I will be glad when that's over.

So, to those people whose whole life revolves around trans hate: do yourself a favour. Stop looking online for trans content and making up ridiculous theories. Stop making yourself paranoid, being angry all the time and getting upset when those who love trans people challenge your behaviour. Recognise the harm you have done - especially to trans children in school, whose lives you are helping destroy by enabling violence against them - and move on. Cheers.

You cite women objecting to a biological male punching women for sport as off putting. That’s interesting given that the public reaction that spectacle was probably what finally drove the IOC to act.

Do you not find men punching women off putting then?

Do you really think a child should be told they were born in the wrong body? Are you defending mastectomies on minors (which have happened?)

Nobody hates trans people we just recognise that their rights are as curtailed by the law as everyone else’s. They are not a sacred caste whose rights trump those of others. The right not to be discriminated against is not the same as the right to do what you want no matter the impact on others.

onlytherain · 30/07/2026 18:01

My impression is that a lot of people in countries with self-ID are not happy about it. They bring it up quite frequently in conversations and I only know one person who is a subscriber. She works in the arts and actually knows nothing about it all.

Men pushing the boundaries means that law makers are slowly realising what they have done, eg. that right wing extremist in Germany who suddenly turned trans in order not to have to go to a men's prison or those Spanish soldiers and the German police officer changing their gender to female for higher pay.

Conservative and right parties can see it is a vote winner and that puts pressure on the left.

Not sure that poster has actually sacrificed any child on the altar of anything. As opposed to using a fictitious one to stick it to women.

If my memory serves, the timeline was all over the shop

Also.

Do not underestimate the power and ability of extremist genderwangists to alienate and piss off people.

Especially if groups like BashBack gain traction.

Only madness lies in that particular direction for GI and that seems to be the primary direction of traffic at this stage.

There isn't really a moderate pathway of rationale and social media influence forming. Even now.

Therein really lies transactivism problem. In a social media led world if the influencers getting clickbait traction are all crazy it makes you all look crazy and that in itself is somewhat unsustainable from a political point of view if you wish to be electable.

The mainstream public will only follow down this road to a point. There is a cliff edge.

Yes, and I think we are edging closer to the edge (the open mockery re the death of Ann Widdicombe, the funding of a “Queer Milk” charity in Scotland with taxpayers’ money, the hate and vitriol expressed at some protests last weekend…. These things are repugnant to many people). Also, I have noticed recently that people are more willing to say what they think, ie that a lot of GI is bloody delusional and contradictory and dangerous.

There will be men at the top
Then there will be men who claim to be women
Women will become third class citizens.

You do know, don't you, that the frequency of you calling us "transphobes" is inversely related to the amount of indifference to your name-calling we feel?

I don't think they ever get this.

Every bit of name-calling reinforces their panic/misogyny.

it's a service, really.

We don't need scientific evidence to prove reality, if you have something that explains how a man changes into a woman and at what point that change happens, as always, please go ahead and link it.

All those little little quiet conversations you have had over the years with people who know you and know you are reasonable and not a bigot.

They add up and break the wall.

Yes and I am doing it more boldly now. Had just such a conversation with my dog walker the other day and then the lady at the salon k go to. And guess what .. they feel similar. And wanted to say so!

This is the thing - the rejection of G I is actually the normative social position. All the YouGov and other polls and questionnaires bear this out, with support for trans rights waning as people realise they have the same rights as the rest of us in law already and as it dawns on them that majority view is the so-called ‘GC’/sex-realist one but people had been cowed into silence because they had been lead to believe it wasn’t.

I’m not transphobic in the least - I am very much AGP-phobic [I think men wanting to take part in women’s sports, with the access to women’s spaces and the roll-playing of womanhood is still AGP]. I feel deep compassion for trans identifying young adults, and young women specifically, who need support and therapy to come to terms with their gender dysphoria and actual sexed bodies. I worry for them if they have taken any medicalised steps within GAC. I fear for their futures and long term physical wellbeing if they are taking hormones or undergoing breast surgeries, given the impact on their bodies. I worry about their MH given they are getting no real therapy and there is no pathway of recovery outside the affirmation model. I feel some level of empathy for the small number of males in their cohorts who are similarly grappling with internalised homophobia or abusive families where they have been lead to understand that being female is the only way they can be accepted, ie the ones who are not AGP. I would step in in a public space if I saw any of these vulnerable young people being abused or harassed. I want them to have the care and treatment they need to get well, to live into adulthood safely with as much of their natural bodies intact as possible.

So I know I am not transphobic. But a 6ft AGP in my female space? I will push back from that because, yes, I am AFRAID of men in my spaces, I am afraid of the motivations they have for being there. The media coverage means that these men, their illness, their arrogant disdain for women they claim kinship with, are being exposed.

And the more this happens the more we can have these conversations with our hairdressers and dog walkers without fear of censure.

My own feeling is that it's an ideology which does not bear examination, exploration, or close contact with. We are that in polls - every year people know more and agree with it less. In the Giggle vs Tickle case it seemed okay in theory to just give Roxy what he wanted - where could be the harm. That was Sal Grover's starting position, to include transwomen. Then came challenging behaviour and unreasonable demands and realisation that things had gone too far in terms of law to just say No. And for the sake of one man a resource to help women can't be offered.

I don't see new evidence of arguments from the trans side supporting their inclusion in the category of women. I hear the same poor arguments again and again. However I am reading and hearing in real life more examples of experience and a lot more awareness that one child/adult in a family expecting or needing everyone to change behaviour - despite sympathy for the person - is increasing scepticism and distrust around the ideology. It is the sunlight that will undo this.

Yeah.

It's something that is self defeating, in that the more successful it is, the more people see what's going on.
