A coffee chain in Canada will be releasing a few Harry Potter themed things like donuts in August and a few people are losing their minds over it, making nicknames like TERF Hortons.

There is a small group of people who like to throw tantrums about this.

Yet the facts show that HP products sell well.

The suspiscious part of my brain is now starting go think some companies do it for the publicity now, including a pre planned retraction of the product to show how "kind" and "mistaken" they were.

Big companies, like Amazon, lego, Warner Bros, HBO just know it will sell and sell well.

A representative for Rowling's PR team said they would not be commenting.

The original Tim Horton's was in my hometown. Great coffee, really great doughnuts. We locals were proud when it became a Canadian institution.

They are massive produced shite now, but I'm almost tempted to pop into the one near me now (UK) for a Hogwarts set just for the fun of it.

Hey! Your hometown, my alma mater town. Hard agree - Timmies used to be the best, are now nasty over-produced pap, but if the HP doughnuts are here in the UK, I’ll be making a pilgrimage to the nearest one.

Are they definitely being sold in the UK or just Canada? I just showed DD and she wants one. We have a Tim Horton drive through not too far away so hopefully they will be available here.

Is it just me, or is this article subtly pro-GC? The quotes chosen to represent the TRA side are pretty unhinged, while the representatives of Tim Horton's sound completely normal and enthusiastic. Not to mention the strategic placing of JKR's pictures...

There was a huge to-do about a Harry Potter themed trail in a park in Vancouver last year - of course it all sold out. People on the ground don't buy into the JKR hatred.

Didn't they have a massive tantrum when a new HP game was released? And yet it still sold very well. I suspect TH sales won't dip during this promotion either.

Oh yeah - the game (which was actually a pretty decent game although I never finished it) was like literal genocide of course.

I did a re-listen to all the audiobooks recently and I think that, yep, they're no great work of literature, but what Rowling did incredibly well, was to generate the spark of imagination that this world could plausibly exist alongside the boring Muggle world - and that captured imaginations and got people reading - and I can't fault her for that - however hard they try to make HP verboten.

Fully grown die hard Potter Adults though - they're fucking odd (and I say that as someone who has a couple of Hufflepuff hoodies).

Or even if they do, they still love HP more. I'm in fandom, and this conundrum is all over the place, with so many fans going, "I don't want to give money to JKR, but I want to read/watch/play this HP thing, what do I do!?" I suspect a lot of it is performative, but what matters is that in the end, they always end up consuming the HP thing, one way or another.

When in Edinburgh las year, we ended up in a bar/cafe/escape room that was just scraping along the "its magic/myth themed, not HP" boundary, while practically falling over themselves to say "we donate to Mermaids" for certain products.

They just looked like twats... they were benefiting from HP, obvioulsly loved it but didnt want to admit it.
