My dad was renowned amongst my friends for his chip pan chips. It was best not to think about the fat bowl that lived in the fridge with a plate on top that was regularly topped up with fat from Sunday roasts that never seemed to reach the bottom and was used to create them.

Top chips though.

We got a penguin biscuit and the chocolate on that always melted too.

Lovely. I remember my first taste of chips cooked in beef dripping. I was four or five and my grandma took me and my brothers to the seaside and we sat in a cafe with a cone of chips each. Those chips were a revelation, speckled and rich with flavour and we were completely silent as we ate them. My brothers still remember them too.

My mum had a bowl like that!. She also kept all the butter wrappers (which were foil and greaseproof paper) for lining baking tins or putting over roasts. She kept doing this until one of my siblings pointed out the wrappers are not just foil and paper any more.

Mr Westriding's family were butchers and his nan roasted beef joints for the shop so they always had a big bowl of dripping handy. They had it on toast with salt and pepper. If you dug down a bit you'd get the jelly at the bottom.

Yeah, what was that all about? The oil was never actually replaced!

Penguin biscuits were also a lunchbox staple.

Heh, mine too! They lived in a pile in the pantry for some reason.

It wasn't oil it was fat 😍

And tasty mixed meat artery clogging fat at that.

The factory used to be about 3 miles away from me. The factory burned down a few years ago, I don't think it was reopened. I used to love them!

I remember dairylea and Cucumber sandwiches… which were a soggy mess by lunch time if you took one in your packed lunch.

No, no, you waterproofed both slices of bread with the cheese spread first, and then put the cucumber or tomato in the middle.

Might be my age but it took me straight to Withnail & I - the revolting washing up bowl.

That was my mum too.

The giant bowl of years worth of reused fat was finally thrown out when she died.
