Heinz make sandwich spread - still available in Tesco and I still buy it!

Dp got a Fray Bentos in a couple of years ago. Apparently they were easier to get out of the tin back in the day. It took him much swearing , several kitchen implements and about 10 minutes. After which apparently it also wasn't as nice as he remembered.

Also, meat paste sandwiches - a lot of people had these in their lunch boxes. It looked and smelt horrible, thankfully my mum never bought it.

I remember falling for the adverts for them but actually not being impressed when we persuaded my mum to try them even back then.

Remember Toast Topper? I quite liked that when I was in my early teens. It was a sort of white sauce with bits in it which you spread on the toast and then toasted it a bit more.

I assume it was seasonal, when there was a glut of cucumbers, so they used only? mostly? them. Maybe still had gherkins, though.

There's a saying in Irish 'an rud is annamh, is iontach' - what is rare is wonderful, so a white sliced bread sandwich with Heinz cucumber spread in was a treat!

I think it's one of the stuffed toy things that Ikea sells that transpeople buy so they can recognise each other when they're out and about. Or on the internet. How else would they tell.

We had that a lot. Meat paste and fish paste. Shippam's was one brand, Sutherland's was another, I think. M&S did a lovely chicken paste in a glass jar. Effectively it was pate, but as this was the 1970s it was probably full of chemical additives to eke out the recognisable ingredients.

My DH volunteered me to take sandwiches to an event a few years ago and went out and bought some jars of meat paste as he remembered his mum preparing sandwiches with it. I was determined not to make the sandwiches but had to step in when I saw what he proposed. It was a genuine intent too. He did see my point when he used it to make a sandwich for himself later. Thinking about it, I am slightly surprised he didn’t propose sandwich cream sandwiches too.

Also loved sandwich spread, used to have it with cheddar. You can get it in One Stop I think, I got some a few years ago, might get another jar!

I remember dairylea and Cucmber sandwiches… which were a soggy mess by lunch time if you took one in your packed lunch.

Usually accompanied by a Waggon wheel (which were huge back then) or a Club biscuit (🎶if you like a lotta chocolate on your biscuit, join our club🎶 you can thank me for that ear worm later)

I used to go to my friend Lesley's house for tea and we would invariably have corned beef and chips. I don't know what they ate the rest of the time but it was always corned beef and chips when I was there.

My nan used to make chip pan chips in lard. They were DELICIOUS.

Yep, shades of 1980s junior school dinners. He eats it fried with eggs, I try to pretend it isn't happening.

We only had sandwiches on school trips and they were always grated cheese and Branston pickle on white sliced bread. We were also given two chocolate biscuits, chocolate sides facing each other, wrapped in foil. The chocolate had always melted so I licked that first and then had the biscuit.

Am truly coming to the realisation that my kids really haven’t lived… all this Waitrose and Tesco Finest, avocado toast, sushi malarky. Perhaps cognitive functioning and critical thinking was enhanced by our diet back then. 🤣
