Croeso/Welcome to the Bluestocking Women's Pub, with our lovely gerbil staff, the icy Mojito foot-bath for those of you fed up with the heat, a Quilting/Craft Nook, lots of yummy food and drink with zero calories, gluten, or allergens, the Gerbil World Cup, and a brand new magic pool that becomes a babbling brook whenever you want it to!

Come on in! All women welcome! (Men welcome at The Staunch Ally pub down the road aways)

(security provided by the capybaras, lovely folk, but try not to get in their way)

(oh, and don't mention triangles, please. Gubbins gets very overexcited)

(did we mention the Gerbil World Cup?)

I listened to a couple of books by Annie Garthwaite recently (recommended on another thread) telling the story of Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV & Richard III. She was hugely formidable.

MarieDeGournay · 18/07/2026 21:53

All this talk about literature.......

We got temperatures in the mid 20s yesterday - maybe 26-27 - so my poor feet are swelling up again.

Blow, Northern winds!
Bring snow, bring sleet!
Bring cooling breezes
To Woley's feet

[eat your heart out, Chickadeeinme 😂]

Oh she was, I listened to a podcast ages ago that mentioned her very tangentially in passing and did some reading.

Cooling breezes, yes.
Snow and sleet, definitely not!😁

Well done the Hansas! Third place is good. No. really. It's good. It's a lot better than, 4th for instance, or 5th. We are proud of you. We are. It's not the winning, it's the taking part and coming 3rd. Really... 😏

Hedgehogforshort · 18/07/2026 21:58

Blink and you miss it in here innit.

been gardening all day. Then went round to see my nephew (for those that do not know he nearly died from a punch in the head)

SIL and BIL bring him home Saturday and Sunday now for a few hours.

They have purchased a vehicle converted to accommodate a wheelchair.

Locally an amazing amount of support and fundraising has gone on, so they have immediate funds to ensure he has a better future for his care needs.

He is still in hospital but continues to progress but still needs a lot of care. He can talk properly now.

He looks and sounds very different to how he was before the assault. He was one of them manly young men. Who my son used to have to guide away from sexism.

But he has always been very loving to me.

SIL and BIL are a lot better than they were and things look much more positive than they did.

so back home to catch up here. I don't post that much these days as i have a lot on my plate, supporting my family, and of course seeing and looking after my grand hedgehog boys who now run me ragged.

But despite my lack of presence i do swiftly lurk and scroll when i can, and i love you all.

It's poetic licence, innit, it's not the weather forecast😁

is definitely something that we need to put on a t-shirt.

Tractors ? I’m missing tractors ?

I nearly missed you, that was a very small post!

  • are you new, or a name-changer, backformoreofthesame? The name implies a regular under a different name, so I'm unsure about what level of Tigger-ish-ness I should deploy in making you feel welcome in the Bluey🤔 In case you are new - you are very welcome, all food and drink here is absolutely delicious, but also absolutely free from anything bothersome like gluten or sugar or the kind of alcohol that breathalysers notice, so hail a passing bar-gerbil and order anything at all that you fancy, and it will be served promptly and professionally.

Now about tractors: do you have some kind of alert set up so that whenever somebody posts the word 'TRACTOR' on any MN thread, you immediately join that thread?😄
Well you've come to the right place - some of us even co-ordinate nail polish and tractor colours.

Not me, I don't do either nail-polish or tractors, so I'll hand you over to some of our resident Tractorians...Smile

Hedgehogforshort, it sounds like DN is making good progress, the fact that he can talk properly is a return to something very precious that might have been lost permanently.
I hope he keeps on this trajectorySmile
It's lovely to hear that the family have had so much support locally.

We're here for you whenever you can pop in Hedgey💙

MarieDeGournay · 18/07/2026 19:17

As you can see on the left, there's a well-stocked bookcase in The Real Bluestocking.
[for recent Stockingers: I made a model of the Bluey a while back, sooooo much fun😃. I made almost everything from scratch, except the chairs which I already had, and the gerbils who came from Amazon - the shop, not the river, it's the Capybaras that come from the Amazon I think!]

This is fab!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2026 22:18

Thanks for the update re your nephew @HedgehogForShort, it has been a long haul already but glad he is making such progress since the very dark early days. And that there is support from the family’s local community.

MarieDeGournay · 18/07/2026 22:21

ChristmasStars · 18/07/2026 22:14

This is fab!

Thank you!
The opening ceremony was performed by none other than Emmeline Pankhurst!
[because Corgi happened to do a 1:32 model of her]
[which tells you what scale the building is - more or less 1:32, but I confess that I just started building it without think about scale, and was very very lucky that there were 1:32 Emmeline Pankhursts, and gerbils, commercially available😄]

Hedgie I must have missed that about your DN. Shocking. So sorry and sending best wishes for his continued recovery. Good that the support is there for the family ♥️

I need the stiffest of stiff gins, and some choccy from a friendly and efficient bar gerbil please as I'm taking refuge from posting. Honestly my BP is rocketing from some posters. Aargh
Then I might be ready for a good old prance- it might help - ribbons at the ready

NotAtMyAge · 18/07/2026 22:26

@Hedgehogforshort I'm so glad to hear your nephew is continuing to make progress and especially that he can now speak again. It sounds like the community has rallied round wonderfully to support DN and his family which is lovely to hear.

DauntlessDamson · 18/07/2026 22:35

It's good that your nephew is continuing to improve Hedgehog. Recovery from a head injury can be a marathon, rather than a sprint but how lovely that the community has rallied round to support the family.

backformoreofthesame · 18/07/2026 22:48

I was around a long time @MarieDeGournayand then took a wee break for my mental health as they say these days. you welcoming me back is lovely - I’ll stand you a drink

tractors just have a strange appeal

I still don’t know why you can’t get tractor driving experience days

I also want to to a train driver one

The Gerbil Mile: A record was set…

The announcement reached the Bluestocking before the official time did.

Somebody somewhere had run the fastest mile in history.

That was all the gerbils needed.

By the time the newsreader reached “…world record…”, Griselda had already rung the Celebratory Bell, the capybaras were laying a running track across the lawn at engineering speeds that violated several pleasant assumptions about physics, and Ginger had sprinted past so quickly she heard the news three seconds before everyone else.

“FASTER!” she yelled over her shoulder.

“We’ve only just started!”

“EXACTLY!”

Nobody knew who was organising the event. Everybody assumed it was somebody else.

Within minutes there were starting blocks, finish-line tape, grandstands full of cheering patrons, several thousand tiny flags, an official band playing something that began as Chariots of Fire before accelerating into complete panic, and enough bunting to be visible from low Earth orbit.

Genial had somehow acquired a commentary box suspended from two optimistic balloons.

“Ladies! Gerbils! Honourable capybaras! Today we celebrate the fastest mile ever run by immediately attempting to run absolutely everything faster!” A roar went up.

Grog fired the starting pistol. Nobody had been called to the line. This was not considered a problem.

Several dozen gerbils exploded in different directions. Some raced around the track.
Others simply picked a direction they felt emotionally committed to.

Ginger was already halfway round before anyone realised the race had officially begun.

Gauge stood beside the track with six clipboards, four stopwatches, a sextant and, for reasons known only to herself, a large cucumber. “Split!” she shouted.

Everyone obediently split into two groups before realising she’d meant times rather than participants.

Gratuity was running an entirely respectable sweepstake.

“Fastest lap!”
“Largest smile!”
“Most spectacular cornering!”
“Best use of centrifugal force!”

There was now a separate betting market on whether the betting markets would overtake the runners. The crowd certainly did.

Patrons poured out of every door carrying homemade banners. The guinea pigs emerged from the garden pushing flowerpots mounted on tiny wheels because flowers should be encouraged to experience speed too. The wombat applauded so enthusiastically that the applause developed an echo of its own.

Rosie the red panda distributed congratulatory hugs to competitors who hadn’t finished yet, on the grounds that they almost certainly would eventually.

The first lap became the second largely because nobody could remember whether anyone had rung the bell. The third became the fifth after Ginger lapped the lap counter twice.

Groom announced impossible split times. “Fifty-six seconds!”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve got a feeling.”

Everyone accepted this as perfectly adequate evidence.

Then the excitement escaped containment. The brass band doubled its tempo. The crowd began chanting. The capybaras decided the back straight would benefit from a slight downhill gradient and quietly rebuilt it while people were running on it. Confetti cannons erupted. Someone released celebratory balloons. The balloons released smaller balloons. The smaller balloons released glitter. The glitter somehow achieved escape velocity.

By now the race had become less a competition than a shared belief that velocity itself deserved a standing ovation.

Ginger hit the finishing tape at astonishing speed. The tape surrendered immediately. She carried it another forty yards before noticing she’d won something. Gauge clicked her stopwatch with enormous satisfaction. “Three minutes thirty-eight.”

“Was that accurate?” asked Genial.

Gauge looked mildly offended. “Not remotely.”

“Excellent.”

“It felt like a world record.”

Everyone nodded. That was, after all, the important measurement.

The cheering continued until several gerbils became temporarily airborne.

Someone produced a trophy approximately three times taller than its eventual winner. Someone else produced medals for everyone present, including spectators, musicians, flowerpots and one extremely pleased capybara who hadn’t realised there was a race but was delighted to have participated anyway.

As dusk settled over the Bluestocking, the track slowly faded back into ordinary grass.

The bunting remained. The applause lingered. The brass band finally reached the end of its piece several keys higher than where it had begun. And somewhere, far beyond the pub, a human athlete may have broken the world record for the mile.

But everyone agreed that, impressive though that undoubtedly was, it had been a shame they hadn’t been there to see how the gerbils celebrated it.

Something stiffish, bar gerbil. And if you forget the water it's fine with me.

Waves

Haven't been around much lately - I have an insanely big writing project on the go - which is fitting if we're discussing literature, as I have been revisiting some old favourites for to see what makes them work.

I have a copy of The Goose of Hermogenes by Ithell Colquhoun which has been sitting in my TBR pile for ages, and I'm quite nervous about it; I do not thole surrealism very well.
