Croeso/Welcome to the Bluestocking Women's Pub, with our lovely gerbil staff, the icy Mojito foot-bath for those of you fed up with the heat, a Quilting/Craft Nook, lots of yummy food and drink with zero calories, gluten, or allergens, the Gerbil World Cup, and a brand new magic pool that becomes a babbling brook whenever you want it to!

Come on in! All women welcome! (Men welcome at The Staunch Ally pub down the road aways)

(security provided by the capybaras, lovely folk, but try not to get in their way)

(oh, and don't mention triangles, please. Gubbins gets very overexcited)

(did we mention the Gerbil World Cup?)

Copilot has forgotten how to make an image of a female moose, but we may keep trying.

A warm welcome to @PrancingPanda

My morning excursion involved several tractors. One was small and old and parked at the end of a lane with a man in boiler suit tinkering with its innards.

That aside, I saw a kestrel perched on an electricity cable, a red kite gliding in a great curve above a valley, a scattering of goldfinches flying across a lane, and a young moorhen, probably the one from a few days back (with less fluff and a few more feathers), being trusted out alone to practice the Green Cross Code. This time it did the Right Thing and turned away from the approaching car, rather than zigzagging about in a panic.

Thehorticulturalhussie · 17/07/2026 11:10

We're back at Peak Tractor here, a combine went past at around 5:30 AND I actually had the chance to speak to the awesome lady tractor driver who a while back filed her nails at the wheel of her stationary tractor while maintaining eye contact with an idiot in a range rover who didn't want to back up to let her through. She's young, actually quite tiny and Ukrainian, came here as a refugee having lost some of her family, was hosted in a town about 25 miles from here and later came to work on a local farm. She seems very happy and is evidently feisty. She said that she's hoping to drive the combine next year and honestly I can't wait.

Thanks all
I do love a ribbon-prance
Or any prance really 🐼
Doubletake on your photo @FuzzyPuffling- looks so like the back aspect of my house 😄 apart from 2 kitties. (Big silly dog instead)

Welcome @PrancingPanda.

MarieDeGournay · 17/07/2026 12:15

Good.. [looks at clock].afternoon, everybody, lovely to see that we've not only been joined by pontefractals but also by a PrancingPanda.

Welcome! We haven't had a panda here before, I don't think, and as we tend to accumulate all things cute and furry, there was a big black and white gap there waiting to be filledSmile
Despite your username, I expect you'll actually spend quite a bit of time sitting comfortably in a corner of the Bluey, chatting amiably about tractors and cats and etymology and even entomology and knitting and the weather and all sorts, while enjoying a large G&T or other tipple of your choice brought to you by a bar-gerbil, and nibbling delicately on some bamboo.

If you like, you can save the prancing for the gerbils' musical extravaganzas, I'm sure they'd be delighted to add you to the bill😄

AngleofRepose · 17/07/2026 13:29

I'm being brief until they remove "show more" function. I cut the grass. I'm tired now. Too hot. Someone else's cat sleeping in my orangery bcs all doors open. Bye for now!😁

I'm currently watching a video from 1997.

Look what the person is buying.

I love the fact that the packaging never seems to change!

Will this do?

I need to say that the largest shape is a cardioid, nothing at all like a bottom.

The Wiki page says it looks like a heart or and apple without a stalk. I thought it looked like a fat bum. I clearly have no class.

Our NDN rang the bell yesterday to say she has a roofer in today. Not much to worry about but because she has the end terrace a cherry picker will be blocking the opening to the shared driveway for 10 yes 10 houses. Of course it will be fine!

Fortunately the Walrus (my DH for newcomers), goes to Tesco at 6.30am and my regular Friday 10am appointment is on holiday for four weeks.

AIBU to think she should have given us all more notice? We live close to a railway station so any parking on local streets is gone by 8am. I appreciate this doesn’t really affect me as I am not too anywhere today, but it is the principle. And I had planned to wash the car as we are travelling to see the Walrus’s sister for lunch tomorrow.

I had a rather strange conversation with Gemini to get the pic of @pontefractals because it seemed rather affronted by the request for a combination of mathematics and baked goods. I'm sure that it would have preferred that I hadn't asked for something so inappropriate.

Tunnel vs. Discworld
The second semi-final…

The Tunnel team walked out overground for the second match running, and this time nobody flinched at the daylight. If anything, they looked almost at home in it — a team that had spent a whole tournament defined by what lay beneath the pitch, discovering, quietly and stubbornly, that they had more than that to offer.

Discworld arrived with their usual gravitational weight — Weatherwax silent and immovable, Nanny Ogg humming something Gwendoline’s bulletin declined, on legal advice from Griselda, to transcribe. Death took up her position with the unhurried calm of someone who has never once needed to rush toward an outcome, because the outcome was already, in some sense, hers.

Griselda watched both teams line up and made a single note in the margin of her clipboard, underlined once: no ruling required yet. She meant it as a hope as much as an observation.

Minute 7: Errol tested the Tunnel keeper early with a shot carrying rather more heat than regulation allowed, and the resulting scorch mark on the crossbar became, by unspoken agreement, a permanent fixture of the pitch.

Minute 15: GOAL, Discworld. Nanny Ogg won a corner nobody could quite reconstruct the details of, and Errol rose to meet it with a header that left the net faintly smoking. 1-0. Griselda wrote “unclear, again” and underlined it exactly as hard as last time.

Minute 26: The Tunnel team, entirely overground and entirely unbothered, began doing what they’d quietly discovered they could do against Scotland — patient, careful build-up, nobody surfacing from anywhere because there was nowhere left to surface from. A ten-pass move ended with a low strike that the keeper got a paw to and still couldn’t keep out. GOAL, Tunnel team. 1-1. Gwendoline’s bulletin read, disbelieving all over again: THEY’RE STILL JUST PLAYING FOOTBALL.

Minute 38: Death made another of her tackles — calm, silent, utterly untouchable — and the Tunnel winger simply found the ball gone from her paws without experiencing the moment of its leaving. The elephant shrew referee checked her notes, found nothing to rule on, and looked, not for the first time this tournament, faintly haunted by paperwork.

Half-time: Weatherwax said nothing to her team, which somehow constituted the whole team talk. In the Tunnel dressing room, their captain drew a second diagram on the whiteboard — no chalk left over from the last one, all of it used up on this.

Minute 55: GOAL, Discworld. From the resulting move off Death’s tackle, Nanny Ogg produced something from her pocket at the corner flag that nobody got a clear look at, and the delivery curled in a way deliveries are not, strictly, meant to curl. 2-1. Griselda’s notes on this one simply read, again, “no.”

Minute 63: Tunnel did not argue the goal, did not appeal, did not so much as glance at the corner flag — they simply reset, re-formed, and went back to the only thing they now had: careful, overground, unglamorous football. Gertrude, watching, pressed a seed into Griselda’s paw that Griselda quietly understood to mean watch this.

Minute 71: GOAL, Tunnel. A long, patient move worked through midfield without a single risky pass, finished by a striker who had spent the whole tournament in the shadow of the tunnels and was, for the first time, entirely visible when she scored. 2-2. The whole Tunnel bench erupted as if this, of all their goals, was the one that actually counted.

Minute 84: Discworld threw Errol forward one more time, and the resulting shot came back off the post with a sound like a gong. The rebound fell to Nanny Ogg, six yards out, completely unmarked —

Minute 85: — and was blocked, at full stretch, by the Tunnel keeper, diving to her right with nothing beneath her but ordinary grass, no tunnel to fall back into, nowhere to disappear to if she got it wrong. She got it right.

90+2: Tunnel broke at pace on the counter, three gerbils, one ball, and a finish placed with the same careful precision they’d mended the whole match together — low, into the corner, unstoppable. GOAL, Tunnel. 3-2.

Final whistle went moments later. 3-2, Tunnel.

Weatherwax shook every paw without a flicker of expression, which from her was its own form of respect. Death nodded once, slowly, at the Tunnel keeper, in what everyone agreed was the closest thing to applause Death has ever offered anybody.
Greta’s line was waiting under the glass:

The tunnels stayed shut. It turns out that was never where their courage was kept.
Tunnel are through to the final, where they’ll meet the Magic Roundabout.
