Croeso/Welcome to the Bluestocking Women's Pub, with our lovely gerbil staff, the icy Mojito foot-bath for those of you fed up with the heat, a Quilting/Craft Nook, lots of yummy food and drink with zero calories, gluten, or allergens, the Gerbil World Cup, and a brand new magic pool that becomes a babbling brook whenever you want it to!

Come on in! All women welcome! (Men welcome at The Staunch Ally pub down the road aways)

(security provided by the capybaras, lovely folk, but try not to get in their way)

(oh, and don't mention triangles, please. Gubbins gets very overexcited)

(did we mention the Gerbil World Cup?)

Well, I have never felt so welcomed in a pub before, thank you 😊
I'm in for the duration, I think.
My name came about because when I logged in I was eating pontefract cakes and had been reading about fractals, which are lovely and fascinating things. As are the pontefract cakes.
@AsWithGlad , the divvy/phone number thing was in fact a complete coincidence, or possibly some sort of Sign. They were married for over fifty years, and were both quite mad but very lovely.

Interesting. I've been described as scary as well (and I'm very small). Always by men who, I think, don't expect words like "no, you're not listening to me" or "repeat that back to me so that I know you understand what I said" to come out of a woman's mouth. Especially at work!

ps. In a scary, American accent 😄

Edited

Count me in. I have been described as intimidating. I deny everything. But secretly it’s a badge I wear with pride. With a small p.

Instead of A Bonfire of the Vanities, it could be called a Bonfire of the Sanitaries!

Beat me to it!

You’re one of us now. You can log out any time you like but you can never leave.

EmpressaurusKitty · 16/07/2026 22:17

Why do I pronounce the place as Pont-ee-fract, but the sweeties as Pomfret cakes?

I was Googling Pontefract’s broken bridge & I found the answer to that one! The town was known as both Pontefract and Pomfret in the 12th century, when it was created by merging 2 villages.

AND there’s a theory that the bridge was destroyed in William the Conqueror’s time by ANGLO-SCANDINAVIANS.

RumNotRun · 16/07/2026 22:59

I thought of some of you today, namely @EdithStourton @Magpiecomplex and any others who like tractors. An appellant in a case I'm processing uploaded some videos as evidence and two of them were of someone driving a John Deere tractor. The videos are all showing access in and out of a site, so nothing most people would be interested in, but the John Deere videos had over 12 likes each on YouTube, presumably due to the tractor.

AsWithGlad · 16/07/2026 23:19

Engaging my Maths brain, I think I’d favour Sign over coincidence. My mum’s divi number had 5 digits. (Our phone number had 4, then everyone in our village had to add 88 at the start, making it 6).
I don’t know what restrictions there were on phone numbers then, presumably nothing too close to 999, but even so there are still a lot of digits to match precisely. Imagine the frustration if it had been 1 digit out!

MyrtleLion · 16/07/2026 23:37

My mobile number was the opposite of my ex boyfriend’s landline, just when landlines became obsolete for all intents and purposes. I still remember the number.

Anyway, off to bed.

I spent my day in the garden, as it was a bit cooler. I have a pond which is teeming with life. There are lots of ugly buggers called nymphs. This year quite a few have decided to morph into dragonflies, i saw three lime green ones and a couple of purples. One lime green i called Fred now followed me around and landed on my arm.

They are amazing wee beasties.

their little carcasses were floating around the top of the pond.

It got very hot again late afternoon, so sat in my big paddling pool to cool off.

had some courgettes from the garden for tea, life felt good today

I suspect there is a large representation of resting bitch face within the Bluestocking, and that's before we start counting the gerbils.

but who is the most scary?

I'd say the hedgehog, especially if you accidentally give her tunnocks tea cakes to someone else!

PrancingPanda · 17/07/2026 01:04

Evening
Here for the craic, gin, crisps, dark tunnocks wafers as can't stand the mallows
Serial name changer who's getting riled with some of the postings on Fwr
And I love pontefract cakes
And prancing

Chickadeeinme · 17/07/2026 03:17

Blimey I go out for the day and miss pages of chat and a couple of new regulars - welcome to you @pontefractals and @PrancingPanda (hope I haven't missed anyone).

I went out for a very nice Japanese lunch with a friend and a walk round a gallery salivating over all the pictures I couldn't afford (or afford the house I'd need to put them in) and then went to a poetry open-mic with DH this evening. Nice day, though the air quality is slightly dicey because of wildfires hundreds of miles away in Canada.

EmpressaurusKitty · 17/07/2026 07:35

Welcome @PrancingPanda!

Another photo of a cat with a lovely smile.

My driving licence number is the same as our co-op divi number, with the addition of one repeated digit at the beginning.
Never forgotten.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/07/2026 07:49

We had our decking replaced this week. I thought you might like to see the cats inspecting it, before we put the plants and table back.
" Yes, ok, but where is the catnip plant going???"

They're both my Tiddles! Do all black cats have particularly long and sinuous tails?

Still hot here. I accidentally dumped my nightdress into the cats' water bowl when I headed into the shower, so I'll have to wash it through properly and put in on the line before I head into town to meet a friend. And refill the cats' bowl so they have something to ignore. I hope I'll be home before 12.00 ish because it's going to be uncomfortable after that.

Sinuous is a marvellous word for cats.

Welcome @PrancingPanda
We have cleared a prancing space in the bar for you and the gerbils are wisely staying tucked away so you can just do you without worrying about stepping on anyone.

They are not allowed unfettered access to the plant. Experience tells me they will eat it all.

( It's not a huge plant, tbf, and they may have invited all their kitty friends round for a party)

Kitty expects me to present the stalk for her to eat the flowers from.

Bore da! Croeso/welcome to @PrancingPanda and @pontefractals nice to see you!

It's not too bad out today. No rain yet, but not too hot. A good day to finally cut the grass, methinks. (yawn) So that's my day. (that, and listening to my neighbor's angle grinder all day - ironically) 🙄

I want to be somewhere cool, sunny, and quiet. Like on top of a mountain. Why do people always have to lay new patio when it's quiet and dry? (no, don't bother, I understand this is a ME problem) I'd rather be cuddling cats.

I used to feed my cat grass like that. She wouldn't nibble from the pot. Madam Princess Specialness, I used to call her!
