Magic Roundabout vs. Hanseatic League
Griselda arrived at the pitch three hours early, which by her own standards was practically a lie-in, and found — somewhat to her own surprise — that she felt entirely, unreasonably cheerful. She stood for a moment testing the feeling the way one tests a suspicious floorboard, and it held. Fifty-nine years was somebody else’s arithmetic, in somebody else’s tournament. This one belonged to gerbils who’d earned every inch of it themselves.
By midday Gerbil HQ had become a single, sustained, escalating event. Gwendoline’s bulletin arrived, after nineteen drafts, at a version that was almost entirely italics and bold, with one triumphant string of exclamation marks she made no attempt to remove. Gertrude produced a tray of seeds arranged into a rosette that nobody had the heart to disturb by eating. Glory had been inflated to a size that technically violated two of Griselda’s own bylaws, and Griselda, for once, chose not to notice.
The Magic Roundabout arrived to their own theme tune at a volume Gwendoline called “structurally ambitious,” Dougal cantering out with her scarf streaming; the Hanseatic League’s marching band — now three working instruments, a personal best — answered with their sixty-strong devoted supporters chanting loudly enough to clear the pigeons off the stand roof. Griselda stood at the halfway line and let herself enjoy it, completely, before raising her paw for kickoff.
Minute 4: The Magic Roundabout came flying out of the blocks, Dougal surging forward with her scarf trailing like a comet, forcing a save so instinctive the Hanseatic keeper looked faintly astonished at her own paws afterward.
Minute 9: GOAL, Magic Roundabout. Brian, of all gerbils, ghosted in at the back post completely unmarked and side-footed home with an expression of such profound, quiet satisfaction that Gwendoline’s bulletin simply read: BRIAN. BRIAN DID THAT. 1-0. Dougal celebrated with a victory lap that was, strictly, only necessary for about a third of the pitch.
Minute 21: The Hanseatic League, unbothered, replied with the patient, well-drilled build-up that had got them here in the first place — wide, then wide again — until a low cross was turned home from six yards. 1-1. Their supporters did not cheer so much as become, briefly, a weather event.
Minute 34: Zebedee — playing, as ever, as though she might spring clean off the pitch at any moment — won the ball high up the park and set Ermintrude away down the left. Ermintrude, unhurried despite her size, produced a cross of genuine elegance.
Minute 35: GOAL, Magic Roundabout. Dougal met it first time, full stretch, and the ball was in before the keeper had finished setting herself. 2-1. Griselda, at the halfway line, allowed herself one small, private fist-pump, then pretended she hadn’t.
Half-time: Florence gathered the Roundabout team in a tight, calm circle and said very little, which seemed to work; the Hanseatic League huddled around their captain, who delivered what Gwendoline described as “a rousing speech, in at least two languages, possibly across several centuries.”
Minute 58: The Hanseatic League came out transformed, laying siege to the Roundabout box for a ten-minute spell so relentless that Griselda’s notes simply read “sustained.” A header crashed off the bar. A follow-up was cleared off the line by Dougal, of all gerbils, in a manner nobody quite expected of her.
Minute 70: GOAL, Hanseatic League. The equaliser finally came from a scrambled corner, bundled over the line amid general chaos, and this time the celebration properly detonated. 2-2. Gwendoline’s bulletin, mid-riot, read simply: OH NO. OH GLORIOUS NO.
Minute 83: Brian, quiet all match since her earlier moment of glory, popped up again — a clever near-post run, a touch that barely counted as a touch, and the ball was over the line before the keeper had registered the danger. GOAL, Magic Roundabout. 3-2. Gwendoline simply typed BRIAN in capitals and left it at that.
90+3: The Hanseatic League threw everyone forward one last time, and a header crept agonisingly wide with the last real action of the game.
Final whistle. 3-2, Magic Roundabout.
Dougal led her team on a lap of the pitch that this time was fully, unapologetically necessary. The Hanseatic League applauded them off with real warmth, band still playing, refusing to let defeat dampen a single note.
Greta’s line was waiting under the glass, as if she’d known all along:
Brian scored twice. Nobody saw that coming. Brian saw it coming.
The Magic Roundabout are through to the final.
