Ok, so I know the educated classes hate us and our Dear Leader, but she's really not doing herself any favours here...

The entity is global medical expertise of which JKR has none. Of course the Nazis sans authority attempted to shut down medical expertise too.

Actually the Nazis attempted to gain "medical expertise" via sadistic and cruel experiments on children, the mentally ill, and the disabled.

JKR set herself up as a global spokes person on women's rights. If she is to be taken as genuine in her concern & not have a political interest in doing so she needs to remain consistent in her critique.

Of course she's entitled to be selective but not entitled to be free of criticism that such selectivity points to more than just an interest in women's rights.

Women's rights, and the integrity and dignity of the female sex is political.

Well, I don't think giant beetles are forbidden in my lease, so... 😅

I once made gooseberry and elderflower ice cream. It was delicious.

I currently have some gooseberry and elderflower frozen mostly yoghurt with some cream. It's come out a bit sharp for me but MrTamednotDomesticated is well struck on it.
I made the same with some blackcurrants which got cooked with sugar and sieved and then accidentally set like jam, it's delicious.

Not ... not all at once, for the love of god?

i think the apple and the peanut might have been both at once.

Singular peanut. Maybe not so bad.

What about giant beetles with a tupperware full of wankyslaw, some queered syllabub, and a bunch of stories about fen drainage?

Waitwhat23 · 22/06/2026 20:20

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/06/2026 15:50

Yes, but I have a cabbage and don't have any celeriac.

Ah, fair play.

EmpressDomesticatednottamed · 22/06/2026 20:21

I bumped into something about queering the fens, and all I could wonder was surely draining them has already queered them?
(I had to check that out in case I'd imagined it, it's definitely a thing.)

... You know, most of the time, I coast along, relatively secure in my general understanding of English.

And then sometimes I encounter a sentence that makes me doubt I ever knew that damn language😂

And of course women. I won't give details; this is a family newsgroup.

What completely baffles me is that anybody in the entire universe is stupid enough to think someone would compare herself to the Nazis and think she could look good by doing so. Not just an Evil Witch (because they desperately need a hate-figure to unite against), a Really Stupid Evil Witch.

Well... They ARE projecting, so, you know, it makes total sense that they would think JKR is that stupid indeed...

Heavens! Of course, you're right.

Why is MN having to think for so long about a map of holy wells??

If anybody wants to go into the subject in detail:

My SIL used to live on Holywell Hill in St Albans

I am small c conservative about coleslaw. My mum has put apple, orange, peanuts and all kinds of shite in hers in the past.

Erm, isn't that dangerously close to some sort of weird Waldorf salad? Which always reminds me of my favourite Fawlty Towers sketch Grin

SidewaysOtter · 22/06/2026 21:43

EdithStourton · 22/06/2026 19:27

I was going to make gooseberry fool the other day, and realised that I had far too much cream and no gelatine. So I made a sort of gooseberry syllabub.

It has turned out to be the best way I have yet found of eating gooseberries.

Sorry. As you were.

Edited for the inevitable typo.

Edited

Gelatine in a fool? I just stew the fruit and mix into whipped cream, Gooseberries freeze remarkably well, for those lamenting the short season. They also make a nice jam with a slosh of elderflower cordial in it.

(I had to check that out in case I'd imagined it, it's definitely a thing.)

I had to google that and apparently it's "a growing cultural and academic movement that re-examines the marshy landscapes of East Anglia through an LGBTQ+ lens".

What the holy fuck has fenland got to do with the LGBTQWTF brigade? Is there NOTHING that is safe from being 'queered'?

Was this similar to the impact of fartichokes?
I absolutely love the flavour, but they are pain to peel, and the effects are... entertaining if you're about 4.

Edited for another typo. I'd blame the four hours of mostly motoway driving I've done today, but I'm always like this.

Edited

Nah.
Bless them, fartichokes are inescapable unless you microdose yourself for a few weeks before properly noshing on them. I grew them for 4 years.

Celeriac aren't remotely as fart-enducing because they don't contain inulin like Jerusalem Artichokes.

From a gardening perspective, the tricky thing is the keeping them well watered while stopping wood lice from turning them into hollowed out colonies

She also sometimes promises trifle, but then turns up with orange trifle (tinned mandarin oranges) which has actually made me shed a tear of sadness and disappointment in the past.

I just don't get trifle. All those lovely things - sponge, fruit, custard - not only mushed together in the most unpleasant fashion, but mushed with things like cream and jelly <shudders>

Well, MN is censoring the map of Ireland's holy wells! Help, help, I'm being oppressed!

Meanwhile, here's an article.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-56216763

There is a link in that article to the map, just under the photo of the stone.

This place is hilarious with the random topics that pop up, my DH was part of that research team, and I have been dragged along to visit St Cooey's Well in more than one occasion! (our early dating days involved many a trip to either holy wells or stone circles, such glamour!!)
