Ok, so I know the educated classes hate us and our Dear Leader, but she's really not doing herself any favours here...

They work in a sort of “SE Asian slaw” type thing with chopped chillis etc

TinselAngel · 22/06/2026 19:17

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/06/2026 18:44

That's terrible!

I just wanted something reliable, and now I am beset with oranges and lemons and garlic and celeriac and yes, dill and fennel.

Waaah.

All you need is white cabbage, diced onion, grated carrot, salad cream, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

AngleofRepose · 22/06/2026 19:19

TinselAngel · 22/06/2026 19:15

I shit you not.

Mamma mia!

I can't even spell two words.

Peanuts in pad thai, sure, but was just picturing peanuts covered in salad cream! urghh

<whispers> I don't actually like coleslaw.

😱
How? It's marvellous.

I don’t ever put salad cream in my coleslaw or wanky slaw.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/06/2026 19:24

I just like mayo and a bit of vinegar.

I think it's the mayo. Or the salad cream. Or the carrots in mayo. Or maybe it's the sliminess. Or maybe it's the whole thing 😬

ArabellaScott · 22/06/2026 19:26

TinselAngel · 22/06/2026 18:34

I am small c conservative about coleslaw. My mum has put apple, orange, peanuts and all kinds of shite in hers in the past.

Not ... not all at once, for the love of god?

AngleofRepose · 22/06/2026 19:27

Ok, misjudged the audience, I'm really getting shot down here.

I'll leave you to your coleslaw worship...
(I'll be in the Bluestocking)

<ducks for cover>

EdithStourton · 22/06/2026 19:27

I was going to make gooseberry fool the other day, and realised that I had far too much cream and no gelatine. So I made a sort of gooseberry syllabub.

It has turned out to be the best way I have yet found of eating gooseberries.

Sorry. As you were.

Edited for the inevitable typo.

ArabellaScott · 22/06/2026 19:27

Wankyslaw. Deli counters will never be the same again.

Agreed.

Chersfrozenface · 22/06/2026 19:29

I love syllabub. I haven't had any in ages.

Could I make it in these temperatures, though?

Yeah, I didn't want to touch that one, thanks for taking one for the team!

Stew gooseberries and then mash and leave to cool
Fold into decent supermarket custard.
Eat

Yeah, doesn't take long to whisk the cream, and then bung it all in the fridge.

It's one of those fancy-looking posh-sounding desserts that is a doddle to make if you have an electric whisk. Like chocolate mousse.

Even easier than whisking them into cream...
Ta.

Can't believe I used to sieve them when cool. Couldn't be arsed one day, and the result was way better.
Just wish that gooseberry season wasn't so short.

What's wrong with celeriac? It makes wonderful soup.

I went to dinner at a friend's once where one guest politely ate the food but was quickly overcome with 'celeriac mash intolerance'
The host apologised profusely because she thought that the cat had relieved itself behind the fish tank.
Four of us ended up lifting the fish tank to check behind it in a fruitless search for cat scat
I don't have a cat or a fish tank but I still tend not to risk celeriac in my menus

MoistVonL · 22/06/2026 19:42

ArabellaScott · 22/06/2026 18:29

Someone invoked the bastard celeriac and now the whole thread is ruined with weird stuff in coleslaw.

Sorry, Arabella.

I successfully grew some for the first time last year, and discovered it is an absolutely delicious vegetable when baked in 50/50 proportions with spuds in a dauphinoise. Unbelievably good.

Was this similar to the impact of fartichokes?
I absolutely love the flavour, but they are pain to peel, and the effects are... entertaining if you're about 4.

Edited for another typo. I'd blame the four hours of mostly motoway driving I've done today, but I'm always like this.

I once made gooseberry and elderflower ice cream. It was delicious.

Oooh... That's one to try. I have a wonderful recipe where you bake sliced potatoes with shallots in a lot of cream and cheese. Celeriac would be lovely in that.

I am not, sadly, in the UK 😔

Mind you, one day I'll get motivated enough to order them on the net 😋

We’ll bring some over to you. If you can cope with admitting a giant beetle to your home that is
