Ok, so I know the educated classes hate us and our Dear Leader, but she's really not doing herself any favours here...

I have NEVER read a single book written by JKR.

Puts up a hand to second.

Please steer clear of Tolkien? He is seriously Hobbit forming.

groan

😂

How much butter?

About 100 g (to 200 g flour and 300 g mixed fruit) but mostly I do it by eye. God knows where the original recipe went. The best thing is to sprinkle it liberally with Demerara sugar before baking, you get a lovely sugary crunchy top.

Never too late! The first 3-4 HP ones are very entertaining in my opinion.

I do own one Harry Potter book.

Alas, its in a language I can't read.

I wouldn't have, but I had a child who was exactly the right age to be enthralled.

I swiftly diverted her onto Diana Wynne Jones, but not before she had decided to read Potter; and sheer stubbornness kept her reading each one the night it came out so she could discuss it in school the next day.

(Yes, she speed-reads.)

So I read them too, in order to be able to argue with her about them and point out the books bits of them came from so she could read those as well.

That piece of information is lost to the passage of time. I am such an old lady after all and remembering how I acquired a book published in 2003 is too much to ask.

Hell these days remembering the correct order in which to get dressed eludes me some mornings!

Pfffft! You just don't want to reveal the sweet, crunchy story behind it 😈

@EmpressDomesticatednottamed please tell me more about these detailed accounts of fen drainage systems? I once spent an afternoon in the March town museum and was fascinated by the section on the drainage of the fens.

It was a long time ago, I cannot remember on what occasion or where we bought it. I expect he still has the book but I haven't seen it for ages. Anyhow, it was a history of fen drainage, the sort of thing you'd usually find in a reference section full of detailed facts and figures and no pictures. I find the whole thing fascinating too but it really does my head in trying to work out how it works! There was a whole lot going on about the Witham Navigable Drains at one point. When he was about 8 he used to take this book to school, and found all the Pokemon, chasing footballs and stuff completely baffling.

We don't live in the fens but there's still a lot of drainage going on all the way up to the Humber. If you want to have your head done in have a look at the draining of Hatfield Chase, started by Charles I and still not really working, especially when the Don floods.

For the exceptionally cheap price of 6 Tunnock's Tea Cakes I may be able to pull the origin story out of my arse from the depths of my internal memory filing system.

borntobequiet · 21/06/2026 22:00

I haven’t read any HP either. I tried but couldn’t get beyond the first few pages. I’ve read some of the Strike books but find them heavy going too. I quite liked The Casual Vacancy, though.

Nope, not falling for that one! If I ever get my hands on Tunnock's Tea Cakes one day, I'll definitely stuff myself with them first. om nom nom

Assuming you're in the UK, I notice Home Bargains have them for about £1 a box. They also had Snowballs, which I'm yet to try.

I'd maybe wait until autumn to try a snowball. In this heat you will open the packet to a near liquid gooey marshmallow mess

I am not, sadly, in the UK 😔

Mind you, one day I'll get motivated enough to order them on the net 😋

It sounds like an excuse to eat the entire box at once like a GOOD thing.

I bloody love JKR's books - HP, Strike, Casual Vacancy, loved 'em.

That reads like something from chatGPT. It's word salad that is a hallmark of trans ideology.

The fact that you associate goblins with Jewish people; - is a symbol of your racism. And is incredibly telling.

The great irony of course, is that on twitter JKR is accused of being too pro Jews and anti-Palestine.

But again, that you think goblins look like Jewish people and are obsessed with money is just a symbol of anti-semitism and racism. The TRAs out themselves. Every.single.time.

Edited

"Word salad" = challenging facts

I'm quoting jewish holocaust sources so are you suggesting they are anti semitic?

And being anti Palestine is anything but pro jewish. You are confusing Israelis with Jews here....which is anti semitic by assuming they are a monolith. Jews inside & outside of Israel are anti Israeli government & form many of the activist groups against them.

That JK Rowling has very little to say if anything about tens of thousands of women murdered & ethnic cleansed by the Israeli government tells you exactly how selective her concerns for women's rights are.

I suspect for JKR its probably a matter ditching the anti semitic tag & aligning her support with right wing parties as a quid pro quo arrangement who are more supportive of the far right government of Israel. The trans panic & right wing ascendance being two sides of the same coin.

I’ve bought some Soleros. I believe they are akin to an ice lolly ‘split’.

Whether my digestive tract will play ball or not with these delicacies is another matter entirely.

Ahh but she is commenting on the Israel Palestine issue ….& its decidedly one sided.

murasaki · 21/06/2026 23:47

So? I find just because I agree with someone in one thing, I don't have to agree with them in everything.

It's incredibly silly to think it's all or nothing.
