Ok, so I know the educated classes hate us and our Dear Leader, but she's really not doing herself any favours here...

Does anyone check the past owners of their private transport vehicles to check they have not been owned by the wrong people to be able to make points on X? Is this a thing now?

My first car was owned by the Sisters of Mercy before I bought it. I'm guessing that makes me complicit in the crimes of the church?

Well well well, just lookee here at who thinks maintaining damaging stereotypes isn't a problem….unless it's related trans people of course.

Wait, now you're worried about damaging stereotypes of Goblins?

Not a vehicle, but our first sofa was second-hand from the American Embassy in London. Guess that makes us complicit in.....well, everything crap the US has done.

no, but knowing the way nuns drive it could have picked up some dodgy habits

no pun intended

Vichyssoise: boiled potatoes and leeks, served cold, what's not to love?

Weighing in to agree with your stance on celery. In addition, the best thing to do with kale is cook it in plenty of butter or olive oil, so that it slides easily off the plate into the food waste caddy.

See, I’m always glad to find a fellow celery loathe. But kale? Kale is lovely!

But...peanut butter on celery is amazing

This is 100% true

"Poireaux à la vinaigrette" is a traditional salad in France, but, erm, yeah, as much as I like leeks, it's the vinaigrette I look forward to in this particular dish :P Also, the colder the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, I can see that- lukewarm leeks bordering on congealed doesn't sound appealing. So, cold, yes, cold would be a prerequisite. And I'm with you on the vinaigrette, better be very good.

Wow! I think that makes you famous (or at least famous-adjacent ). Am I jealous!

Yes. I'm afraid it does. <sigh> Your life is over now, you no longer exist...

I feel that my victim status as having been taught by the Sisters of Mercy redeems me.

<mutters under breath >

Fine, I'll be in the Gullibles Corner for a while...

Thanks for the reminder, vichysoise is definitely going on the menu this week.

Mashed potato just how cruel do you want to be to me today?

How wrong do you want to be today?

I love potatoes in almost every form but mash is the waste of a perfectly good spud.

<gavel>

I like potatoes but they don't like me. Mash is definitely a waste of a good spud - if I'm going to risk the pain, it needs to be a flipping fantastic culinary experience, and mash... ain't.

Then you're doing it wrong. Cream, butter, salt, black pepper garlic paste. A bowl full of that please.

Can't do black pepper or garlic either, I'm afraid. Hence mash being underwhelming.

murasaki · 21/06/2026 15:48

Makes sense in that case.

Nonsense, celery is the real deal breaker.

I have just one word for you:

Dill.

It is how to ruin smoked salmon.

Weren't you worried it might have a problem with this corrosion?

DeanElderberry · 21/06/2026 17:03

Dill is delicious sprinkled on boiled carrots - and renders pretty much anything more digestible. It is very confusing that the tirade against boiled food and this ridiculous denunciation of JKR are separate threads.

I have avoided the boiled thread in case someone thinks I actually boil beetles!

DeanElderberry · 21/06/2026 17:06

I mentioned (delicious) boiled cake at one stage but was not taken up on it.

Dill is one of those tastes you either like or you don't. Celery apparently is another. I have a feeling they may even be related!

I make a beautiful sweet/sour lightly pickled cucumber recipe which is entirely elevated by the addition of dill.
