Ok, so I know the educated classes hate us and our Dear Leader, but she's really not doing herself any favours here...

So let me see if I've got this right. We have to hate JKR now, because writing about goblins in a fantasy novel is antisemitic. OK, so far so ridiculous, but for the sake of argument does that mean we now have to hate Shakespeare because of Puck? All of the MCU because of the Green Goblin? All of Tolkien because of the Orcs? Anything D and D derived because, well everything? Anything Bowie ever recorded because of Jareth? They'll never be able to go on the Internet or larp at Comic Con again..

For what it's worth, a couple of sticks of celery added to clear soup, along with an onion (both to be discarded

Surely a decent leek would give a similar flavour AND wouldn't have to be discarded? (Can't eat onions but never cooked celery).

There is no such thing as a decent leek.

They are vile vile things (but then I like celery so what do I know!)

Quite a lot of head-desk interfacing going on, regarding Emile's posts! It's as if we've travelled back in time.

For what it's worth, a couple of sticks of celery added to clear soup, along with an onion (both to be discarded when the chicken / meat is cooked) is blimming ace, by the way.

<Heads to Sinners for lunch.>

Misty comic. Just saying. (JKR was a bit too old for it, but she may have read the odd copy all the same).

Well that's a blast from the past. I used to love Misty and I'm only very slightly younger than JKR.

No anime or comic con?

There are thousands of TRAs self imploding as we speak.

Buttered leeks are a thing of glory. Sorry, Boiled.

I love celery too. Proper homemade celery soup is one of those things I should really make more often

Buttered leeks, with loads of black pepper. Yum.

SidewaysOtter · 21/06/2026 13:42

On the goblin front, what they really valued was goblin-made things, like swords. They saw anything goblin-made as ultimately only being on loan to the witch or wizard who held it, even if they thought they'd purchased/commissioned/won it.

Griphook had agreed to let Harry etc keep the sword of Gryffindor until they'd got out of Gringotts but he was so desperate to get his hands on it that he took it and left them there. He wasn't interested in the sword for its value, he wanted it because he saw it as being returned to its rightful owners.

The analogy peddled by the hard-of-thinking on this thread fails on so many levels.

Onions are fine but I'd discard the celery before you make the soup. The best thing to do with celery is roughly chop it, because that makes it easier to put back in the bag and chuck it in the food recycling bin.

And some orange zest/juice. Bloody lovely that is.

Boiledbeetle · 21/06/2026 13:49

I refuse to believe that putting butter on a leek makes it any more beetle friendly.

Except celery.

Speaking my language now! Boily's wrong about celery, just wrong, but I am sympathetic to the plight of beetles and Horror of the Leek. Luckily I'm not a beetle. I like leeks (have to, it's required in Wales, so I've been told).

Ok, you can just stop now with the peanut butter heresy!

Leeks and ham in cheese sauce served with mashed potatoes is a winter food of the gods. Beetle can have some Tunnocks thingies instead if she prefers, her loss.

Boil the leeks and use some of the water in the sauce so it's more velouté than béchamel. Brown in the oven until it's all bubbly and brown.

Proper old-fashioned blanched white celery is heaven, perfect with cheese or paté. The modern green stuff is often nasty raw, but good, as sinner says, to add flavour to stock (for instance when you are poaching a chicken breast) but lovage does the job even better in summer.

Weighing in to agree with your stance on celery. In addition, the best thing to do with kale is cook it in plenty of butter or olive oil, so that it slides easily off the plate into the food waste caddy.

Both are lovely with a nice vinaigrette dressing, hot or cold.

Cold leeks? Cold ... leeks...? Um, cold leeks... ok maybe. That vinaigrette had better be really, really good.

"Poireaux à la vinaigrette" is a traditional salad in France, but, erm, yeah, as much as I like leeks, it's the vinaigrette I look forward to in this particular dish :P Also, the colder the better, as far as I'm concerned.
