Griselda had spent the evening of England’s fixture completing a full audit of the Tournament Operations manual, specifically the section on adverse weather protocols. This had been on the agenda for some time. The timing was coincidental. The audit took two hours and forty-five minutes, which was, Griselda noted, approximately the duration of a football match plus pre-match coverage, and this was not something she had calculated in advance.

Gwendoline had been drafting the communications strategy for the Tunnel fixture. It was important work. She had drafted seven versions and had found, upon reflection, that the television in the corner of the office showed football when left unattended, and had therefore attended to it, by facing her chair in the opposite direction. The Tunnel communications strategy was now eight versions long and very thorough.

Gertrude had been in the seed store. The seed store did not have a television. This was, Gertrude felt, one of its significant advantages as a workspace. She had counted everything twice.

Greta had not been in the building at all during the England match, for reasons that remained her own. She had returned afterwards. She had looked at no one. She had placed a single sheet of paper on Griselda’s desk. The paper said: 0-0. Whether this constituted a communication or simply an administrative deposit was a matter on which Gerbil World Cup HQ had not yet reached a formal position.

The gerbils were either not bothered that England had drawn, or very much bothered. It wasn’t clear which was the case.

Someone has decided today is a good day to get the chainsaw out, on a day when no one can close their windows. Not next door to me, thank goodness. I imagine it's either "necessary work " or someone from the village will have a word!

ps. well, I suppose I will have to close the windows by 10am anyway, and drawn the curtains. But there's a good breeze right now. <sigh>

Edited

Do you live on my street? Some nobber is doing exactly the same here. 😡

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/06/2026 10:52

We are currently at about 18 degrees here - it is lovely and sunny but not too hot yet - my door is open for any Bluestockingers who want to escape the heat. If prodded, ds3 will provide drinks - unless the bar gerbils want to come too?

Chickadeeinme · 24/06/2026 11:16

It’s about 20 in NJ at the moment, but sadly the tolerable temperatures didn’t help the England team much last night. My DS1 informs me that we have to win the next match against Panama. I’m inclined to side with Gertrude on this and count other things instead.

AngleofRepose · 24/06/2026 11:53

They've downgraded tomorrow to 33C and Friday to 22C!!!! It was going to be 29C, so I'll take that win! (Yes, I realize that I am honorary-Welsh because I'm obsessed with the weather) 😆

Wish I were in Jersey (never thought I'd say that!) 😁Although I have a very good friend who lives in NJ, in a "naice" part, along the Hudson, just south of Palisades. I haven't been to visit yet, but it's on my list.

Chickadeeinme · 24/06/2026 12:08

My DS’s part is a nice neighbourhood, though not quite “naice ” like the Palisades. It feels very safe and pleasant.

A mere 22 on Friday? Get the fleeces out!😁
I think when Greta passed a sheet of paper with just '0-0' written on it, it was meant to be read as 'Uh-oh😬'

I took DSD to the GP practice and it was bliss to be in the air conditioned car for 10 minutes each way.

Came home to the Walrus dismantling the broken sofa. He had dismantled it too much so we struggled taking it downstairs to sit in the front garden like we’re one of those families on a council estate. Maybe they’re just waiting for the bulk waste to be collected?

We scraped the wall because we’re idiots. But that’s what sandpaper and primer and paint is for. Though immediately he’s saying we have to repaint the whole wall (it is three storeys tall, so we’re not doing that.

Old sofa will be collected for the princely sum of £135 tomorrow because the council has postponed bulk waste collections till mid-July.

New sofa arrives tomorrow! The delivery people will take it up the stairs for us, and then we will never replace it.

The BBC1 news has just featured a live broadcast from The Met Office.

Their ceiling lights look like clouds.

@MyrtleLion , it can’t be fun to be a delivery person shifting sofas in this weather.

Better the professionals than you, though.

PastaAllaNorma · 24/06/2026 14:26

Yesterday I had three separate social engagements, more that the previous month so combined, so it felt mad busy for such a sultry day.

Today I am washing the bedding and duvets - but mostly rotating frozen gel packs from the freezer onto various parts of my body in an attempt to reduce the ugly welts of heat rash I'm covered in.

We're in Yorkshire. Yorkshire isn't supposed to do 34⁰ in the shade.

Iced coffee and pistachio choc ices for everyone, bar gerbils!

The email reminder from the collection people said they would collect it from inside (maybe not from upstairs though, or dismantle it), anyway, I’m not telling the Walrus about that. It was very strenuous to bring it down in this heat.

Chickadeeinme · 24/06/2026 14:57

No iced coffee for me thanks, bargerbils - can’t stand it! Iced tea with lemon in it is great though.

AngleofRepose · 24/06/2026 15:06

Oh, but pistachio choc ice? Yes, please, I'll take two 😬
(I am ill)

Thanks Pasta. I changed my order to a Sticky Toffee Pudding ice-cream cone, which I ate on my way back from my volunteer session😋

PastaAllaNorma · 24/06/2026 16:12

I've also filled an empty soda water bottle with ground coffee and water so I can have a cold brew coffee tomorrow and Thursday to give me a caffeine boost without any heat involved.

It's got even warmer so I'm prone on the couch in the North facing living room with a fan blasting inches from my face.

Damson, if I could get my energy levels even a little bit higher, I might make damson sorbet later on. Possibly with a splash of gin in it.

Oooh, that sounds nice. I've used up all my frozen damsons from last year and I'm on the starting blocks for this year's harvest. A few weeks to go.......

ErrolTheDragon · 24/06/2026 17:20

It was only up to about 26 here so I’ve been edging and tidying and weeding the shady back border. Also washed the garden furniture and hosed out the cobwebby arbour. It mainly functions as something to grow climbers up but I might try actually sitting in it later after I’ve finished a nectarine with skyr and almonds - no ice creams within reach alas. But I’ve sliced and frozen some bananas for tomorrow.

EmpressaurusKitty · 24/06/2026 17:22

Kitty’s out on the balcony now, but for most of the morning it was simply too hot. Bearable inside with curtains closed though.

Thehorticulturalhussie · 24/06/2026 17:26

It was 34 here this afternoon and I am wilting, as is the dog. We went out at 6 this morning and only managed a couple of miles.
Damson sorbet sounds fabulous, if you have leftovers I’d be willing to help you out @PastaAllaNorma I do have a jug of iced mint tea in the fridge though.
Polecat in the garden today which is a first and I’m not especially happy about that unless it was just passing through.

Magpiecomplex · 24/06/2026 17:30

36° in the back garden currently, and we have flying ants in the house. Bar gerbil, could I have a virgin mojito big enough to sit in please?

OP posts:
AngleofRepose · 24/06/2026 18:04

Not too bad here, 28.5 in the warm part of downstairs, probably 24 in the cooler part. I've given the upstairs up to the weather demons and the laundry (dries in a flash and I don't have to go out into the garden twice). Probably close to 35 upstairs. No ants or flying ants yet, but there's always tomorrow.

I hope you didn't have a whole day of chainsaw? Mine stopped after about two hours, which was long enough! I suppose I shall find out all about it the next time I go to the Little Shop.

MyrtleLion · 24/06/2026 18:11

Great news , the Darlington nurses have won £187,000 in compensation for being forced to share a changing room with the fragrant “Rose”.

Legal costs will be decided later.
