Bluestocking Women’s Pub - it’s Maytime!

Welcome to any women who want the company of women!

Thats it really….ok so this place is staffed by gerbils with the occasional quokka or capybara but it functions like a friendly pub where you don’t have to know what’s going on all the time.
The drinks don’t intoxicate and the food is delicious yet healthy so please do come in.

Do you think I could outsource my marking to Giant Wombat? I've got one set finished today but I have another set waiting for me and there will be another set after that. And then there's the stragglers to consider.
Alternatively, if any of the gerbils are at a loose end, I'm sure they could do it. It's not like my students ever actually read their feedback anyway (and then whinge in surveys about not getting feedback).

I can do it, if you like, although I used to mark in purple.
My department was very keen on purple: eventually we had purple exercise books, in two sizes, and purple lever arch files for the students to keep everything in.

Oh, you want it marked well? Oh, probably not me, then.

edit: the purple was optional, I chose to use it and then others did, too.

I have to be up to go to work in about 6 hours. Please may I have a very large glass of Armagnac to make me go to sleep?

re the women's living community:

A good friend of mine spent all her life in social work. She ended up in adult social work, overseeing a patch which included several care homes. I have observed that she knows how to prepare for her old age.

After she retired she sold her house and bought a flat in - I don't know what they are officially called, one of those developments of flats in one building with a manager and laundry and large living rooms for shared use. Over 55s only. (The communal rooms are very convenient for our social group meetings.)

Quite a hefty service charge. It's right in the centre of the city, very convenient for everything. Some people like her are fit and well, others have carers who come in several times a day.

It's not women-only, but there aren't many men there.

It seems an excellent place to be - she knew what she was doing when she moved there. I can see many potential drawbacks and disadvantages, but most of them don't apply to her particular development.

I think if you know someone who lives/has lived in a particular one before you buy so you can learn all about it they can be a good choice.

I've been dreaming about building a lovely home for the various women/ denizens of the Bluestocking, with room enough for a moose or two, in the Garden. I am not getting any younger! Having spent the last hour-and-a-half trying to get copilot to make some images, I'm afraid I am ten years older now and have used up all the electricity in the universe.

But it would be soooo nice to live that way. Among friends, with your own space, and shared spaces, and support if you need it, and company of you fancy it. Oh also

No, no, she didn't.

This is Gillian, remember. Gillian 'Direct Action' Gerbil.

Oh dear, yes, Gillian. I had tried to forget.

Magpiecomplex · 11/05/2026 07:48

Boy, the dream gerbils don't do things by halves, do they?
First I was getting to know an attractive gentleman in the cab of a John Deere, and then I was fighting for my life in a futuristic urban battlefield (laser blaster fights in Superdrug type thing). I don't actually want to know what those two dreams might be saying about my subconscious mind!

DeanElderberry · 11/05/2026 07:54

it was reminding you of the advantages of rural life.

I had a fantastic night's sleep, woke once about two hours in, then back to zzzzz for another six. No memory of dreams.

The bad bit is I'll have shower now in wet wet water because it's crafts day and I need to be clean. Sad times.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/05/2026 09:38

The DGs must have coshed me. Sharing a room because we’re away, DH apparently woke in the night with an intense pain in his eye so had to put a light on so he could measure his eye pressures. Fortunately ok - he must have been sleeping on it oddly or something. (And fortunate he invested in a hand-held tonometer last year after his scarily high pressures etc)

BTW Inky, the new unantlered look is.. interesting... it'll take some getting used to I confess..🤔
Is it something to do with AI no longer misgendering correctly sexing mooses?

I'd like to put my name down for a place in Moose Hoose, please😁

That would be perfect, Marie! I see you have already prepared some amazing architectural drawings for our new project.

edited to point out that the above pictures from last night's post were wrung out of the AI while it wittered on about what it was going to do and then didn't do it time after time ... today's effort is much more fitting

I'm very glad the sleep and dream gerbils have been doing a good job! Your DH's experience sounds really frightening, Errol. I've never heard of a tonometer and I once used to work in a moose hospital far away and far across the sea. We did have extra large tongue depressers for moose, but they are quite low on the technical scale.

Lovely to see you too, Fuzzy 🐧

MyrtleLion · 11/05/2026 15:40

I had a coaching call. She likes my approach. Gave good advice. I'm a third of the way through. She'll do a mock interview tomorrow at 4pm.

I have a dental appointment at 9.30. The Walrus didn't tick to say I.eas a UK resident which he's never had to do but is why the policy lapsed. His company will probably restore cover because it's a mistake but we may have to pay for the whole treatment as I wasn't covered at the time.

Having a break now.

most people probably call them ‘horrid air puff gadget’ and come across them in the opticians rather than hospitals. His has tiny little probes instead. 😬 They’re not exactly commonplace items for individuals to own but if a retired scientist can obtain a piece of kit for doing measurements on themself then they’re liable to do it - and it has been quite helpful in managing his condition.

sounds like a good call!

Annoying re the insurance - seems like the sort of thing where if your been insured before his HR or whoever should have queried him before letting it lapse.

Well, yes. And he should have ticked the box when reminded...

Work is being slightly complicated at the moment. It's time-limited and will be much better by this time a fortnight hence, I've just got to get there.

MarieDeGournay · 11/05/2026 18:10

I'm glad you've been getting useful advice about the interview Myrtle.
Really annoying about the insurance.. and if only it had been you on box-ticking duties, that day, right?....😞Flowers

The Carebils are booked in for 'a fortnight hence' [nice turn of phrase, thatSmile]
and the Cheerbils are on their way now to support you till then.

It's OK, they've put their magic cloaks on so only you can see them and hear their chants of
gimme an M
gimme an A
gimme a G
gimme a P
gimme an I
gimme a ...GUBBINS! what are you doing here?!

Fingers heavily crossed for you @MyrtleLion - makes typing difficult but I'll cope.

MarieDeGournay · 11/05/2026 21:45

Errol, a few days ago you suggested chrome marker pens for my model restoration job - brilliant idea!
It worked perfectly, the chrome flows very well and you can see how much better it was than my previous solution, chrome nail polish.
It could be even more chromier if I had prepped the surface better but it's a very old model [I made it as a teen and my mother kept it all those years!] and I'm happy enough with this finish.

The chrome pen came in a set of three, with gold and bronze was well😍

I've been prowling around the house looking for things to bling up😁
Thank you Errol!

Sympathies, Myrtle. My DH is terrible with forms, contracts etc despite having a Big Brain, so would have done the same.

MarieDeGournay · 11/05/2026 22:28

I re-arranged my wardrobe today - the piece of furniture, not the clothes, that would be a whole other day's week's work.

I bought some shelf-thingies for inside the wardrobe, and they came with this note that I thought I would share with Boily, profound words of wisdom😏 to inspire her de-cluttering -
'May it accompany you through countless well-organised morning and nights'

If I wanted a 'quiet, thoughtful and durable companion' to 'accompany me through countess morning and nights', a set of four plastic shelves would not be my first choice!🙄
