Bluestocking Women’s Pub - it’s Maytime!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2026 08:48

Welcome to any women who want the company of women!

Thats it really….ok so this place is staffed by gerbils with the occasional quokka or capybara but it functions like a friendly pub where you don’t have to know what’s going on all the time.
The drinks don’t intoxicate and the food is delicious yet healthy so please do come in.

Break a leg, Magpie.

Just partaking in a crisp sandwich thread on AIBU there are some wonderful recipes i must try.

FranticFrankie · 06/05/2026 21:51

Good luck Magpie and Myrtle
The gin and tunnocks will be on you 🍸🍫
I've just read through the thread quoted above - oh my good grief that's time I'll not get back
Wish I'd popped here instead, but I couldn't stop reading.... even though much of it is a load of .....
And lots of chiding from mucho posts 😳make it make sense. Or stop

I kept up with thread for a few pages when it started, and I've just looked at the thread gallery and read p40. It clearly went completely wild. Parrots should come with a public (mental) health warning, as they are little shits.

Major news: We have had some actual RAIN.
A brief drizzle this morning - probably as much as we had in the whole of April - and then over an hour of heavy drizzle/ light rain this evening. It was supposed to last much longer, but the weather forecast consistently overestimates how much we'll get.

We’ve had no rain here, at least while I’ve been awake, but in a different part of East Anglia my friend reports that it’s been raining hard.

Guess which one of us is on holiday?

AsWithGlad · 06/05/2026 22:56

There a grand post by the National Trust on Instagram, about some of Fuzzy’s kin.
Here’s the live link.

You can even see them in the dark: I think it’s raining there, too.
Edit: they are surprisingly noisy. I think it ought to be past their bedtime, perhaps they are keeping each other awake.

Two things:

Firstly, wishing the absolute best of luck to @Magpiecomplex and @MyrtleLion. You have got what it takes; just make the interviewers see it. I have my fingers, toes and everything else crossed for you.

Secondly, the earlier discussions about the next gerbil extravaganza brought together the words 'jazz' and 'gin'. I have recently returned from furrin parts which were completely underwhelming apart from a 'Gin and Jazz' party. The first hour was awesome. The next three hours became somewhat uncertain but it was a fantastic night.

I miss sandwiches. I have stopped eating bread almost completely, to keep my blood sugar under control, so no sandwiches for me. Bacon sandwiches. Cheese and ham. Brie and apple. Cheese and pickle. Toasted cheese. Tuna mayo and cucumber. Smoked salmon and cream cheese. Cucumber. <<weeps gently>>

MarieDeGournay · 06/05/2026 23:17

Loving the gerbil extravaganza!
Understanding Boundaries Through Interpretive Morris Dancing should be required reading for certain visitors on some other threads...@😒

SidewaysOtter · 06/05/2026 23:18

Don't be ridiculous, Moulin Rouge can't be 25 years ago. Next you'll be telling me that the 90s were not 'a few years back'.

Good luck to the interviewees! <hands cheerleading pompoms to the gerbils>

Lovely puffins!

25 years ago is actually about seven years ago, and the 1990s were only a decade ago. Maybe 11 years ago.

The gerbils will rehearse Act III tomorrow and then on Friday put on the show. Apparently Act I is "easy - just a bit of singing and Gwendolyn on a trapeze swing" so they didn't actually rehearse it.

I know.

I'm just telling you what they said when I inquired about the sequins...

AsWithGlad · 07/05/2026 00:38

Fancy putting on a Moulin Gerbil extravaganza with so little rehearsal.

Our gerbils are, indeed, remarkable.

FranticFrankie · 07/05/2026 00:48

Oh lovely puffins! I went to the Farne Islands years ago- it was fab! And the seals ❤

ChristmasStars · 07/05/2026 06:32

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius have you tried sourdough? My DH has T1 diabetes but finds that sourdough doesn't spike his sugars. I don't eat bread much but I make breadless sandwiches so I just have the toppings on a plate!

I wonder what didn't ever happen in 2017 for him?

The thing that struck me about a couple of those threads lately is that there is a cohort of young for whom the term 'transphobic' is like garlic to vampires, and they are appalled that the evil old terfs just laugh. The accusation they dread being treated as a joke shocks them. They can't believe it's happening - we're meant to be so ashamed when we see the word that we scuttle back under the rocks. But we're not scuttling.

In other news, Rosy has got her voice back.

Oh, Woley, I know just how you feel. After years of food experiments, I finally worked out that it was bread that was making me bloated ( I mean, like a flat(ish) stomach to balloon-shaped Mrs Potato Head in 15 minutes), so I gave it up. Very occasionally I'll have a few slices with butter at Christmas. So I also no longer eat butter. <sigh>
My waistline is happier, but I am not. It also means that I have to cook a lot more at lunchtime, so my gas bill is higher...
Not. happy. bunny.

Yes, 1990 was 10 years ago when I was still going out to see Pearl Jam and Pixies in the clubs!

And "Gwendolyn" and "trapeze" really ought not to be in the same sentence , let alone in the same vicinity.

DeanElderberry · 07/05/2026 07:56

If the bread problem is related to wheat rather than carbs in general you could try making a loaf of porridge bread. It can be sliced very thinly and makes good sandwiches. And toast. I don't usually use low fat yogurt, but it's the best option for that.

AngleofRepose · 07/05/2026 07:58

And, bore da to everyone else!

Gerbils, before you start rehearsals, could I have a cappuccino and some lovely freshly-baked bread with slatherings of butter, please?

Another busy day for me of house viewing and (hopefully) seeing another tractor in the city.

Just as an aside <she says, just as an aside>: Why exactly is it that, when one wants to move into the city, all the houses are too expensive, and yet, when one decides to move out to the countryside, suddenly all the rural houses are too expensive? ... it's just so confusing...

EdithStourton · 07/05/2026 08:00

Maybe I should declare myself to be on holiday....

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/05/2026 08:11

@AngleofRepose, I’m about to put a batch of sourdough rolls in the oven if you can wait 20 mins.

Just been to vote & managed to miss the queue. My local councillor is a good sort who knows what a woman is, so that does make it easier.

DeanElderberry · 07/05/2026 08:16

I do sympathise Edith, having been there, but we're still less than a fortnight away from the ground squelching underfoot it's so saturated. The 50 days of continuous rain earlier in the year mean the aquifers are full, and the soil is nice and damp.

I'm not sure whether this will display properly.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/05/2026 08:18

I’m not sure Gwendolyn and the trapeze will be in the same vicinity for very long tbh.

skip this para if it’s boring…😂
DH would probably be well on his way to diabetes by now if he wasn’t careful about carbs - MiL had T2 , we both tried a CGM a couple of years ago and it was quite clear he got much bigger spikes and drops than me despite having the same HbA1c measurement. We make flatbreads of his devising which are 4/5ths oatbran, and are the only bread which doesn’t cause him a big spike and even then, it’s much better if he has them directly before or during being active rather than being sedentary eg driving. They make a compact sandwich that can easily fit in the pocket of a walking coat or my small handbag and make quite a nice toastie in the panini press. The thing that’s really bad is white rice especially short grained Asian type - he uses a CGM when we’re on holiday and eating differently to usual; if he has rice we have to go for a very brisk walk immediately after to stop the alerts!

…and good morning all!BrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrew
