I've been busy again with the garden. I've been looking for a bay tree in a pot and on the off-chance phoned a local shop. Yes, they'd had six in this morning and had two left. I hurtled down, bought the tree and came home on the bus with said Laurus sticking up out of my shopping trolley.

Which became, temporarily, a tree trolley.

🤢 nope! That is an abomination!

I remember the joys of working in Hull many years ago and discovering "chip spice". I've no idea what was in it but it made the chips taste amazing.

I first discovered them at a pub on a Friday lunchtime in Ivybridge, Devon.
Never not delicious!

MyrtleLion · 27/04/2026 16:36

Apparently I sleepwalk.

This isn't new. What's new is finding out that the name for what happens to me is sleepwalking.

I occasionally awake in a complete panic with a desperate need to find something or do something I have forgotten. I wake up from deep sleep, not REM. Sometimes I search the drawers next to the bed.

Last night I exclaimed, "No that's not it", got out of bed at 3.33am, walked to the living room and searched for "it" (which was very clear in my head last night and now I can't remember). I didn't find it. I went straight back to sleep (watch said I was awake for three minutes) but the Walrus was awake till 6am. Even DSD woke up.

This has happened before when I've got out of bed searching. One time (pre Walrus) I even said "don't tell me I'm asleep, I'm definitely not".

I asked ChatGPT what it was called and it was confident it was confusional arousal, but all the medical definitions say sufferers don't get out of bed. So what I did was more closely aligned to sleepwalking.

Not sure what to make of it and I'm mortified I woke him and he couldn't sleep afterwards.

Magpiecomplex · 27/04/2026 16:47

I've been in training all day, after working all weekend. Nuff said.
Although I did experience the delight that is cheesy chips made with absolutely freshly cooked chips and a culinary blowtorch turned on the cheese to help it melt. That slightly charred edge to the flavour was delicious, and has now spoiled all other cheesy chips for me.

Cheesy chips, cheesy chips...? um...
Yup, I could go for that! Kind of like a starchier version of mozzarella sticks without the marinara. What's not to like? Carbs and cheese 😃

My sister used to do this when she was a teenager. Stairs and all, always looking for something, often behind bookcases or in the fridge. Possibly to do with hormones? Or stress?
It didn't last for years, maybe a whole year, off and on.

Ah so that's how they got Great Birnam Wood to Dunsinane - in their shopping trollies - of course! <facepalm>

You have so much to be thinking about, Myrtle, it must be hard for your busy mind to switch off even in sleep..Flowers

When I worked in a certain Fife high school, cheesy chips were the favourite. I don't think that the council allows them now, though the last time I did supply, we still had "Fishy Friday" (with chips).

Cake, sorry if I ruined your osteoporosis thread😕We were having some good discussions, I hope this is just a blip. I just find people who plop and criticize without first reading the whole thread intensely irritating (putting it mildly).

On the one hand, most of my fat is round my middle. On the other hand, I like my food.

I took a healthy homemade salad for my lunch at work. I ate it and then I went and bought crisps and chocolate at the thought of my meetings this afternoon. I wasn't even hungry, just pissed off with the world.
We've had lovely weather the last few days up here, which I'm very pleased about, however it does make it even tougher going into a windowless lab for a couple of hours. I want longer weekends (despite already only working 4 days per week as schools round here finish at lunchtime on Friday's).

😂Healthy salad and chocolate and crisps! Nothing wrong with that, isn't that normal? Especially when the world is wrong and we are right!

WearyAuldWumman · 27/04/2026 17:17

I'm just back from Pilates.

I'm still fat round the middle with stick arms, but at least I'm more flexible than I was. I kid you not, for about 10 years I couldn't get my big toes to move (post op). Now I can actually balance on them to an extent.

This is part of the 'avoiding going into a care home too soon' campaign. We were using yoga balls for balancing exercises today, This is the first time we've not had balls bouncing all across the studio, so we must be getting better.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 27/04/2026 17:20

I am now craving some cheesy chips!

I'm having a healthy chicken stir-fry for my evening meal <sulks>

Pilates is great, isn't it? I used to do a lot, as there was a class nearby, but since I moved house, I find it hard to get the motivation to get into the city for a class. Sometimes I do some at home (I have Darcy Bussell's DVD.) I can still do rolldowns and some of the easier stuff, but I injured myself badly several years ago (torn intercostal muscle) and it keeps re-injuring, so I am petrified doing the more difficult moves. I need to build up again slowly.

Thank you. The previous incident was 20 years ago. In the last year I've had four incidents and this one involved getting out of bed whereas the others were me searching through the bedside cabinet.

It probably is stress.

WearyAuldWumman · 27/04/2026 17:36

Oh, DH had a bad intercostal injury at one time, I recall. It's quite nasty - I can understand you taking care.

He used to do weight training every day - he started out in life as a woodcutter and at one point was Scottish Universities weightlifting champion in his weight division.

In his late 50s, he took up karate and got his black belt at 64.

I'm fortunate in that the gym is only a 10 minute car trip away. I have relatives wanting me to move house, but I'm close to all amenities here and figure that it's worth staying here so that I'm only a 10 minute taxi fare away from most things (for when I finally have to give up driving).

At the moment, I'm working between two gyms - the local one and the one 16 miles away. I might have to give up the second gym when I'm no longer driving. (I'm not paying two memberships - my membership gives me access to all Fife Leisure Trust gyms.)

I did a charity thing with Dame D Bussell many moons ago, when she was still dancing. My colleague forgot her name and called her "Dorothy Arsehole". The name has stuck with us ever since.

The pain was quite debilitating for about six weeks, and now there's a weak spot. Annoying. I didn't even realize I had torn it at the time! For a while, given where it was, I thought it was something much more sinister.

I miss my old classes. I am actually looking to move back into the city now that I'm getting older. I don't enjoy driving, but it's essential as the village is kind of in the middle of nowhere ( as middle of nowhere as you can get between two cities!) and the route out gets flooded regularly, including the railway. I really don't want to be living on my own out here when I'm much older , as much as I like the quiet life. I've never really fit in here. Although I've lived here for many years, I'm always going to be "the only American in the village. " 😄

A taxi or bus ride away from most amenities would suit me fine!
