Would or will you vote Green if it was the only way to change a Council that has traditionally been Labour?

That's the situation in my council area.

Not going to list issues in my area as maybe a bit identifying, but in terms of local issues they have lost the plot.

I am not a member of or ever been a supporter of any political party.

I usually just vote for a local independent candidate, but as the suggestion is the Greens could get in, should I vote for them to get Labour out, when I despise their treatment of women.

No, the Greens are ridiculous.

NowtSalamander · 17/04/2026 18:46

i am in this position with my council and am actually considering voting Labour for the first time in 12ish years (because of women’s rights) as the Greens scare me witless.

Same. No way will I vote Green.

The Greens in my area are utterly anti-Semitic and quite frankly dangerous. Their supporters have been doing 'Jew hunts' knocking door to door writing down people's addresses that don't boycott Israeli goods. My Labour MP has shut down their office due to it being vandalised by Palestine supporters and staff being harassed.

I would vote Reform in a heartbeat to keep them out. I'd even vote Labour. I'm probably going to check who is closest to them on polling day and vote for them.

Sadly the people here think they're all about the environment and they'll probably get in.

I'm close to where WarriorN's candidate is and mine's as bad.

RandomHypatia · 17/04/2026 19:50

I know people who used to vote Green many years ago and then had them run the council (Brighton). They don't care about the TWAW arguments and still would never vote Green again based on their council performance. I think the council is Labour again now

NoisyHiker · 17/04/2026 19:50

I really dislike Reform. Disillusioned with Labour. Never voted Tory.

But I would vote for any of them to keep the lunatic modern Green party out.

MaidMiriam · 17/04/2026 19:57

I agree @NoisyHiker. I find them scarier than Reform.

By a country mile.

Thistooshallpsss · 17/04/2026 20:01

I’m not sure any council has much power to sort housing out tbh. Most councils are so strapped for cash they just have to stick to their statutory duties. I’d be interested to know what you would like them to do?

Coatsoff42 · 17/04/2026 20:03

I’ve voted green in the past, would absolutely not now. They are currently not sensible or balanced and not suitable for governing a normal population of ordinary, mixed people. It would be like voting a student union into power.
We have a truly excellent public servant Lib Dem candidate here who will get my vote based on long standing personal integrity.

But if it was between reform and Green Party I don’t know but I think I would hold my nose and vote reform.

OrangeAxolotyl · 17/04/2026 20:03

heathspeedwell · 17/04/2026 18:29

Absolutely not. And I say that as someone who used to support them. They are dangerous.

This. I was a supporter, but not any more. There's no way I'd ever give them a vote

I've voted Green in the past to keep out Reform, and I'd do it again, if I thought Green had a better chance of beating Reform than Labour did.

I would also do this.

CoraLdn · 17/04/2026 20:05

No way. I used to be a conservative voter but will vote labour to keep out Reform.
Greens are batshit crazy. Zac Polansky thinks hypnosis can make your boobs grow (not a joke - Google and you’ll find him talking about it and not joking)

IwantToRetire · 17/04/2026 18:29

Why as after all Labour's attitude towards women is just as bad?

You are just swopping around bags swopping bags of rubbish. The Greens have even less of an idea that Labour on almost every front.

Augarden · 17/04/2026 20:06

No, the Greens are mad. I'll be voting Labour (in Scotland), unfortunately think it'll still be SNP in the end despite how incompetent they've been.

Hallamule · 17/04/2026 20:06

No, I'd rather vote Conservative (and I say that as someone who used to vote Green back in the day and who has never voted Conservative).

GingerBeverage · 17/04/2026 20:08

MaidMiriam · 17/04/2026 19:57

Reform argue and fall out and seem less coherent. The Greens at this point seem more like a cult.

SidewaysOtter · 17/04/2026 20:14

I wouldn't vote Green for any reason. The local door-knocker looked absolutely terrified when I asked them what a woman is and tried to tell me it's "anyone who identifies as one". That - combined with their tit-whispering leader - means I'd rather spoil my ballot.

user2848502016 · 17/04/2026 20:19

No I wouldn’t - as a previous supporter and lifetime left wing voter

I will be voting conservative or even possibly reform

The article describes Bristol Green councillors holding up placards after previously walking out on female residents exercising their right to attend council meetings. This is not democracy. There are some great individual Green councillors (I know some) but they are in constant fear of being disciplined and humiliated if they don't adopt the correct stance on identity politics.

A small crowd of people sat in a public gallery at a council meeting. Many people are holding up banners and flags. Some of the banners say "protect the dolls", "trans men are men" and "trans people exist". Nobody is looking at the camera.

I would vote for whichever party had policies that most aligned with my areas of concern or interest.

Camdenish · 17/04/2026 20:21

I didn’t vote Labour at the General Elections.

I will be voting Labour at the local elections. Our local Labour councillors are very good, they listened to me when they came door knocking. Greens may get in and not only are they frightening they couldn’t organise a bin collection if Veolia knitted one for them.

This. I'd be concerned about Reform's ability to manage. Whereas I'd be concerned that Greens would do actual damage. They are insane. Some of their candidates are openly supporting terrorists.

Thanks. One one level I can see that people who have never "been in charge" would not have the skills. And so would probably not be able to do much to change probably what is the culture of staff in the local authority which sadly, like so many other councils irrespective of the party in charge, social housing tenants are just treated as a nusiance.

At least do repairs in an efficiently and timely fashion.

Admittedly many HAs are just as bad and I suspect as in my PP that this is as much to do with staff thinking they dont give a shit.

I think many people dont want to deal with the fact that councillors are if not employers almost like board members of a company or charity.

If the staff culture is rotten, the people who suffer are the people the organisation (council) exists to support.

So on this level my local council is not unique.

How many months would you think it acceptable to have water running down the wall in your front room?

I think too many councillors think they will just be dashing around making speeches and getting likes on SM.

When in fact they are going to have to work out why they cant get those employed to do the work to do the work.

Nope. Not a chance I'd vote for a Green. Can you imagine them actually running your local council??? Labour is going to be decimated anyway; they don't need our strategic votes to make that happen. Better that you get a hung council, so vote anyone else.

I have to say this is my usual attitude, although if someone local is standing as an independent, I would vote for them. (Unless they has some really out to lunch single issue platform!)
