Would or will you vote Green if it was the only way to change a Council that has traditionally been Labour?

That's the situation in my council area.

Not going to list issues in my area as maybe a bit identifying, but in terms of local issues they have lost the plot.

I am not a member of or ever been a supporter of any political party.

I usually just vote for a local independent candidate, but as the suggestion is the Greens could get in, should I vote for them to get Labour out, when I despise their treatment of women.

I've voted Green in the past to keep out Reform, and I'd do it again, if I thought Green had a better chance of beating Reform than Labour did.

heathspeedwell · 17/04/2026 18:29

Absolutely not. And I say that as someone who used to support them. They are dangerous.

NorthXNorthWest · 17/04/2026 18:26

No.

Why as after all Labour's attitude towards women is just as bad?

Perhaps check out the individuals actually standing in your seat? I’d be warier of ‘new’ greens than old stalwarts, but also see if you can find them on socials etc to check out what issues they have championed in the past. I’m not a member but I have friends who are, and there is not as broad a consensus on eg ‘TWAW’ as you might think. Same goes for Labour though.

Do be careful of getting a Green majority council though, several areas (Brighton, Bristol …) don’t really seem to have benefitted from that.

TiredOldHen · 17/04/2026 18:36

No.

Gallusoldbesom · 17/04/2026 18:38

The Greens are even madder than Labour when it comes to women’s rights/TWAW debate. Scottish Labour has suddenly woken up to the fact that there’s an election next month and have done a 180 degree turn, announcing no men in women’s prisons, going to uphold the SC ruling etc. I suspect canvassers have had their arses handed to them by very pissed off women and sensible men, hence the change in mood music, I don’t trust any of them any further than I could throw them. Polanski was a disaster on the Rest is Politics, couldn’t give budget figures, doesn’t know the difference between the deficit and national debt, then moaned at Rory Stewart afterwards that he hadn’t expected to have figures to hand…..Sigh.

yetanotherusernameAgain · 17/04/2026 18:39

Christ no. The Greens are worse than Labour (and I say that as a former member of the Green party). They're batshit crazy nowadays. Have you seen how Green councillors in Bristol behave?

ScrollingLeaves · 17/04/2026 18:43

No.
I find Zach Polanski absolutely horrific.

StillWeRise · 17/04/2026 18:46

there are some sensible greens
we have just one council seat (as a result of a green councillor resigning)
I will be emailing all the candidates with a very neutral question, eg
how do you see the councils role in responding to last years SC ruling?
I will then engage if it seems worth it (ie a person who hasn't really thought about it would be worth educating) or if I get a TWAW response I might argue and indicate I will not be voting for them- if I can be arsed.

NowtSalamander · 17/04/2026 18:46

i am in this position with my council and am actually considering voting Labour for the first time in 12ish years (because of women’s rights) as the Greens scare me witless.

rubyslippers · 17/04/2026 18:49

The greens have more terrible policies than labour
Riddled with antisemitism, big believers in gender ideology and nothing on the environment

StillWeRise · 17/04/2026 18:51

if you are sympathetic to other aspects of the greens (I am, the climate is my #1 issue)- its worth letting them know that you can't/won't vote for them while they continue to disregard women's rights. Imagine being a GC green- you need evidence to say that their TWAW nonsense is losing them votes

BusyAzureTraybake · 17/04/2026 18:52

Absolutely not. They are completely captured by identitarian policies. Hannah Spencer's maiden speech didn't mention climate or environment once. Any vocal dissenter gets thrown out, and what use is a non-vocal dissenter? They are ruthless in getting rid of people, so any councillor is living under threat of discipline for showing any independence of thought.

nearlylovemyusername · 17/04/2026 18:53

No, never

EdithStourton · 17/04/2026 18:57

No.
They are terrifyingly idiotic.

arethereanyleftatall · 17/04/2026 18:58

Absolutely not. I think Greens are a disaster and I think if they get in, the UK that I’ve loved for so long will be gone.

JazzyJelly · 17/04/2026 19:00

No, they've gone absolutely bonkers unfortunately.

justintimeforxmas · 17/04/2026 19:00

Christ no. I’d vote labour to keep out greens

anniegun · 17/04/2026 19:01

Yes

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/04/2026 19:02

Not a fucking chance

PoppinjayPolly · 17/04/2026 19:03

NorthXNorthWest · 17/04/2026 18:26

No.

And again… fuck no!!

Hopefulsalmon · 17/04/2026 19:03

No, they're on a par with Reform for dangerousness for me

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/04/2026 19:03

IwantToRetire · 17/04/2026 18:29

Why as after all Labour's attitude towards women is just as bad?

The Green Party are fucking lunatics when it comes to gender. Labour although bad have at least some sane people in their midst.
