Would or will you vote Green if it was the only way to change a Council that has traditionally been Labour?

That's the situation in my council area.

Not going to list issues in my area as maybe a bit identifying, but in terms of local issues they have lost the plot.

I am not a member of or ever been a supporter of any political party.

I usually just vote for a local independent candidate, but as the suggestion is the Greens could get in, should I vote for them to get Labour out, when I despise their treatment of women.

I've voted Green in the past to keep out Reform, and I'd do it again, if I thought Green had a better chance of beating Reform than Labour did.

I have decided, after huge amounts of soul-searching, that I would rather have a Reform-led council than a Green one. Reform represents the old enemy that we have fought before and tamed, if not beaten, but the Greens are a terrifying new enemy who don't even believe in democracy. They are the closest we have ever come to a mainstream anarchist party, run by a bunch of dangerous activists.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 17/04/2026 19:07

I’d vote Green to keep Reform out, that’s the only time.

JalamityCame · 17/04/2026 19:08

Not the Green Party in its current state, absolutely not.

hattie43 · 17/04/2026 19:08

No . I’d never vote Green . They are dangerous fools .

I agree.

gemini0606 · 17/04/2026 19:10

Absolutely bloody never

GingerBeverage · 17/04/2026 19:10

No, because I don’t think having an open border policy is conducive to hitting green targets.

SpottyAlpaca · 17/04/2026 19:11

Absolutely not, under any circumstances.

Because of their policies which would severely damage the industry in which I work. I’m a disappointed & disillusioned Labour supporter, but I would even vote tactically for Reform to keep the Greens out. I’m ABZ - Anyone But Zack.

IwantToRetire · 17/04/2026 19:11

I appreciate the comments about the Greens, which I am aware of as someone on FWR!

But the problem is, and I must emphasise this, there are many local issues which Labour has had decades to sort out and they haven't. Also some dodgy manipulation of procedures in the Council so very hard for anyone to have a voice.

So of course I know about both Labour and the Greens betrayal of women.

But as one is as bad as the other on women's rights, is it worth voting Green to get Labour out even if only to find out what has been going on that Council services, let alone accountability are so bad.

(None of the other parties standing have any chance of becoming the majority.)

And these "anarchists" are going to take over the country, one council at a time? I'm not convinced.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/04/2026 19:14

No. Our council is usually almost entirely Labour, with an elected Labour Mayor (and our MP is always Labour too). The only party that looks likely to win anything next month is Green. I've told them I won't vote for them because they are not following the science. The canvasser looked amazed and I clarified that they may be right about the environment but they're ignoring science when it comes to gender identity and single-sex spaces and services.

I was actually just checking if there was anyone I can vote for with any enthusiasm and the answer appears to be no. The choice is Labour, Green, LibDem, Tory or Reform. No Independent candidates this time. I need to see the leaflets and dig around a bit on the backgrounds and views of the Labour candidates. I may vote Labour as the least worst option. Otherwise it's a spoiled ballot.

WallaceinAnderland · 17/04/2026 19:16

I would vote any other party except Green.

Zipidydodah · 17/04/2026 19:18

I live in an area that is very left wing and green leaning with many many green Parrish and local councillors. And the vast majority of the many Green Party councilors we have are great! Very committed to environment, social and community agenda. Actually out in the community doing good things and getting things done and listening.
The trans stuff is not top of their agenda nor is it on mine. (I know that’s an unpopular view here!) and mostly they seem to believe that TWAW but also recognise that there needs to be safeguards with this. Just like Labour, if they were in power - this just isn’t going to be in the top 199 priority they’ll kick it into the grass - just like Labour have.
The labour govt are so mired in absolute sleaze / lies / arse covering they may as well be the Tories.
They have no policy position on anything - hence U-turn on EVERYTHING. Starmer hasn’t the balls to either stand up to Trump or fully support him leaving us with the worst of both options. Trump is a psychotic lunatic who threatened to end a civilization and Starmer’s statement to that war crime is “that was wrong” - ffs - please see Mark Carney, Pedro Sanchez or … Zac Polanski for the appropriate response)
So I have no idea how the people can make statements like the Green Party “scare them”
They are pretty solid from what I can see.

And as for the rest is politics - Rory Stewart has NEVER asked any other leader those questions and I’d bet a substantial amount of money that Starmer, Badenock nor Farage know the answers on the spot either

Both the Tories & Labour deserve to be kicked to the curb so why not the greens? I’m not voting for reform that’s for sure

IwantToRetire · 17/04/2026 19:19

Does anyone live in an area where the Greens are the majority party in the local council?

Are they any good at dealing with local issues, listening to local people, whether about schools, parking, rubbish collection, etc., etc.?

@IwantToRetire
cross post as they say

I do and I’ve been really impressed having been fairly cynical

Absolutely no. Although Labour are bloody awful, I don't accept that "the one is as bad as the other on Women's Rights". Whilst Labour does have a significant and substantial minority of true believer swivel-eyed loons, those loons make up the Green Party in its entirety now; they've purged the party of any vestige of logic or common sense ages ago. Polanski is just the greasy cherry on top of a very sanctimonious and unpleasant cake.

EasternStandard · 17/04/2026 19:24

This is being sold here by the Greens as a way to get Labour out and so far my answer is no.

Chersfrozenface · 17/04/2026 19:25

But the problem is, and I must emphasise this, there are many local issues which Labour has had decades to sort out and they haven't.

And you think the Greens will sort them out?

Really?

Strange comment. Would you apply that statement to any political party polling well?

DustyWindowsills · 17/04/2026 19:28

No way. They're batshit.

That's why I am asking.

So really appreciate feed back from those who live in an area under Green control.

This is an inner city area with some of the worst council housing in the country, with one ward that has some of the highest levels of poverty, and increasing segregation thanks to policies favouring rich incomers who think it cutting edge to move to a multi-ethnic area so long as they dont have to mix with any of them. A bit like one of those holiday resorts where you are sold it on the basis of going somewhere "exotic" but in reality spend all your time in your walled enclosure with other tourists like your self.

The Green Party has changed so much. I dislike them almost as much as Reform.

Floisme · 17/04/2026 19:38

I will probably vote Labour to try and keep the Green Party out. It will piss me off mightily but that's how bonkers they (Greens) are round here.

WarriorN · 17/04/2026 19:40

Jesus, no.

And I say that as a Labour Party member.

Would or will you vote Green if it was the only way to change a Council that has traditionally been Labour?
IwantToRetire · 17/04/2026 19:40

So apart from @Zipidydodah no one has experience of how a Green council would deal with sub standard housing stock/
