Trans-owned bookshop invites customers to vandalise JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels

A trans-owned bookshop has been inviting customers to vandalise JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels for 25p.

The Bookish Type in Leeds is inviting customers to deface the beloved children's book to raise money for transgender healthcare.

Customers can deface 'as many pages' as they want of an edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The independent shop then plan to auction the book off once it's filled up.

Rowling, 60, has become a target after positioning herself as one of the country's most prominent gender-critical voices.

One message, addressing Rowling, says: 'You’ve ruined yourself, ruined the name of feminism and ruined the precious childhood of thousands of women and girls. F* you.'

The Bookish Type told PinkNews: 'We came up with this idea a few weeks ago as a silly and cathartic way to raise money for five local trans people.

'It was originally going to only be on our second hand Sunday event that we run every few months where we sell second hand books and give all the money towards local trans people’s healthcare costs, but we did it a week early and people love it!'

Sadly I bet a fair amount of this hate is coming from from trans identifying women and girls and female allies.

I for one am impressed by this attempt to raise money for Harry Potter and JKR and thus giving her even more money to spend on good causes.

So kind of the shop to advertise Harry Potter by this jolly jape just when it is important to get the books as talked about as much as possible online to boost the new HBO show.

It is working too!!!

Harry Potter TV show trailer becomes most-watched in HBO history

After its release earlier this week, the teaser clip, which offered a first glance at newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as the boy wizard, notched up 277 million organic views across platforms in its first 48 hours online.
This made the promo video the most watched trailer in HBO and streamer HBO Max’s history, exceeding the previous record by more than double according to Deadline.

I saw this a few days ago and thought there'd be a thread on here before long.
I personally think defacing books is ridiculous. Regardless of what you think of the author, what is that going to achieve?!
Just makes you look daft.
Defacing or banning books is not a good look on whichever side it's coming from.

True, but this sort of behaviour is always only coming from one side, isn’t it??

If I lived in Leeds I contribute to this by writing stuff about how awesome JK is, what an inspiration she is standing up for women against the loons, all the money she donates to women’s causes etc.

which would confuse them and maybe educate a brain cell or two. 😂

I thought the comments by DT readers a bit weak!

Edited to add not that the DM comments are much better.

Maybe someone should post a link to this thread in the comment sections!

JKR still gets paid if they can't return the books, so they're actually paying her more money.

dinodart · 28/03/2026 22:38

these people in the past probably looked down at conservatives burning Harry Potter cause it was "evil" or whatever. i'm sure they believe they are quite right and kind and virtuous... just like those conservatives did.

Well, yes. But why would they do this when they can do something petty, spiteful and performative instead.

I kero trying to pretend I live in a sensible timeline where people aren't constantly doing insane things 😅. I should do a revisit of the books again sometime.

I think from my memory of the article, these aren't copies they have ordered.

They are books donated to them to sell second had to raise money for whoever it is. (5 people?)

I think this was a one off a while ago when someone gave them a second hand copy, and it was their response to what in their mind was wrongness of selling, even second hand, a copy of a book by JKR.

It was a sucess so then they thought it could be a money raiser, but as a PP said at 25p a go how much money would they raise, and in fact are there enough pages in a book to every raise more than £10!

This is so funny! JKR has already been paid for the original sale.

And selling a second hand copy wouldn't give JKR any extra.

It's ludicrous.

They don't want to know.

There will be a few who truly believe JKR is evil but most are just echoing what they're being told in their chamber, never having given what she has said any thought, if they've even actually read her words.

They need someone to blame for their eternal victimhood. Rather than listen to what she, or anyone else, has to say they'll scream about how hard done by they are, piss all over the place, spit at terfs, whatever other delightful behaviour they choose that they know won't get them what they want. Because they always want to be victims.

Okiedokie123 · 29/03/2026 13:26

@NebulousSadTimes of course they don’t want to know and that’s why they prefer their echo chamber.
Which is exactly why I think it’s helpful to put ourselves in that space if we can. Like “edge of the matrix” whose approach is to attempt to engage them in discussion. Little by little someone either there in person or watching a video of his is going to wake up.
