Trans-owned bookshop invites customers to vandalise JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels

A trans-owned bookshop has been inviting customers to vandalise JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels for 25p.

The Bookish Type in Leeds is inviting customers to deface the beloved children's book to raise money for transgender healthcare.

Customers can deface 'as many pages' as they want of an edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The independent shop then plan to auction the book off once it's filled up.

Rowling, 60, has become a target after positioning herself as one of the country's most prominent gender-critical voices.

One message, addressing Rowling, says: 'You’ve ruined yourself, ruined the name of feminism and ruined the precious childhood of thousands of women and girls. F* you.'

The Bookish Type told PinkNews: 'We came up with this idea a few weeks ago as a silly and cathartic way to raise money for five local trans people.

'It was originally going to only be on our second hand Sunday event that we run every few months where we sell second hand books and give all the money towards local trans people’s healthcare costs, but we did it a week early and people love it!'

It isn't a normal bookshop.

We’re a community bookshop so we aim to actively support and work with the local queer community. Here are some of the things that we do:
a Pay It Forward scheme which is a way of making queer books available to those who can’t afford them.
run Queer History Tours around Leeds so that everyone can learn about the rich LGBTIQA+ history of our city.
hold Second Hand Sundays where we sell pre-loved queer books to raise money for local grassroots LGBTIQA+ groups.
a community noticeboard where we promote local LGBTIQA+ events and groups.
offer discounts to members of local queer book groups.

Pathetic and typical of the trans loons.

The Bookish Type told PinkNews: 'We came up with this idea a few weeks ago as a silly and cathartic way to raise money for five local trans people. way to get national publicity for our bookshop and turn our mates into lifelong healthcare patients who might end up with horrible side effects but we ignore that cos this makes us feel good.

Fixed!

ArabellaScott · 28/03/2026 09:23

What an odd and bitter wee stunt.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 28/03/2026 09:24

Facilitating the abuse of a woman to make money. Great look there queer bookshop guys and gals!

Much Progressive, Very Feminism, Wow.

Coatsoff42 · 28/03/2026 09:24

I wonder if they will open this up to any other books where they don’t like the authors? Probably not.
These stunts only serve to cement JKR as the iconic voice in this discussion. There’s no one else as relevant or debated.

Mumofteenandtween · 28/03/2026 09:28

Kind of them to buy one of Jo’s books.

Has anyone told them about libraries? No need to ‘pay it forward’, you just join up and borrow. Simples.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/03/2026 09:33

They want to "raise money for five local trans people.". This is hilarious. Who are these five and why do they need money raising for them by defacing books over anyone else? To buy dresses and make up?

madosaurus · 28/03/2026 09:40

Is it 25p per page or 25p for as many pages as you like? If it’s the latter, they are not doing right (write?) by the 5 people they are raising money for.

Dollymylove · 28/03/2026 09:40

So if 10 people turn up to vandalise a book they will have raised the princely sum of £2.50 🤣🤣

Pleasealexa · 28/03/2026 09:40

I truly don't get the hate for JK. She has never been hateful towards Trans people so what's behind it..could it be that they fear her because she is articulate and able to clearly and rationally state concerns over men using female spaces?

Libraries are transphobic. There might be undefaced JK Rowling books in the building. And what if someone was reading Helen Joyce? Far too risky. Books can only be acquired in a purely affirmatory environment, or they might become tainted.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/03/2026 09:42

Great idea! Do Roald Dahl next! They can raise money for local Jewish people. Although Dahl was antisemitic and there's still that $1m waiting to be claimed if anyone can provide evidence of JKR being transphobic. You'd think Lithgow would be all over that.

I'm actually reminded of the time that tras sent porn and threats when JKR did that twitter thing for children's drawings. If they had to get people to deface the book, why not be positive? Get them to write nice things about transpeople instead of nasty stuff about women.

Don't tell 'em, Pike!

MarieDeGournay · 28/03/2026 09:43

I remember JKR tweeting, in response to an organised burning of her books, that when a copy of one of her books is burnt, the royalties she received for it somehow magically disappears from her bank balance.... 😁

Encouraging the defacing of a book, any book, is not the act of bibliophiles. They shouldn't be in the book business.

Meteorite87 · 28/03/2026 09:44

Figcherry · 28/03/2026 03:30

Clever way of publicising the bookshop.
Now if they are so offended why have they any books by JKR in the shop.

They probably ordered a batch in just for their current BS.

It's because she is so successful and has such a wide reach. So it's important that TRAs make her a visible focus of abuse and threats to deter others from speaking out.

Brightbluestone · 28/03/2026 09:45

“Ruined the precious childhood of many women and girls” God they’re so bloody dramatic!

MyLimeGuide · 28/03/2026 09:45

Love that they are buying her books thus making her more money and also providing her more publicity!! Lunatics!!😂

Because in TRA world unless you give them 100% validation they’re real women exactly the same as those of us who were born female- except obviously they’re more stunning and brave and are better at womanhood than us - and allow them totally unrestricted access into single sex spaces then we’re evil bigots with GCSE level biology
They see JKR and her unwavering support for the rights of women and girls as being on par with Hitler. Because saying what you see is literally genocide apparently

And sadly there’s a long kind of penis pandering handmaidens preaching #bekind at the economic their own sex.

And the fact JKR calls out the bullshit, lies and lives in reality triggers the male entitlement and aggression underneath the lipstick and cheap wigs.

RoyalCorgi · 28/03/2026 09:51

There are lots of ways to protest against views you don't like, but for some curious reasons, trans activists methods always seem to employ violence or aggression or intimidation. I can't imagine why.

NebulousSadTimes · 28/03/2026 09:52

TheCozyWyvern · 28/03/2026 03:46

Wouldn't it make more sense to auction off signed books by transgender authors or something than auction off a book they don't like and also spent money on to do this thing?

People are a lot more interested in hating their supposed oppressor than they are in supporting, and spending money on, those they are claiming to support.

Or even worse - someone could be reading the Daily Mail!!
Also, fewer woke points for just going about your reading business like everyone else does. Much more merit in making a song and dance about it.

“One message, addressing Rowling, says: 'You’ve ruined yourself, ruined the name of feminism and ruined the precious childhood of thousands of women and girls. F* you”

Surely it’s the opposite??
