The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

I had my cataracts done 6 weeks apart, and in the intervening weeks I entertained myself by looking through the cataracty eye..."yellow, its all yellow" and then through the done eye..." soooo bright, I don't need to repaint my skirting boards".

You don't see anything relevant during the procedure at all. I was terrified I'd see a knife coming towards me. You don't. Not even a little bit. Just a bright light and pretty colours. No sedation here, and I'm a wimp.

EdithStourton · 15/03/2026 08:38

All these cataract op stories are very reassurring.

George Bernard Shaw?

Yes Errol, you're right🎉Smile
And Sionnach too.

GB Shaw won the Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay for his adaptation of Pygmalion in 1939, having won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925.

Bob Dylan won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2001 for the song 'Things have changed' and in 2016, the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Shaw left a portion of the royalties from Pygmalion to the National Gallery of Art in Dublin, which later got a big boost from My Fair Lady.

Good, I hope all fears have been banished, with evidence coming from not only big bwave Bluestockingers, but also self-confessed wimps, like myselfSmile
Given a [unlikely and illogical] straight choice between a cataract op and a dental filling, it'd be cataract op all the way for meGrin
AND we've learnt a new word, thanks to Frantic: phacoemulsification .
Every day a school day here at the Bluey!

NotAtMyAge · 15/03/2026 13:33

Thank you you all so much for your good wishes. I was very touched to read them all. I'm glad to say the operation went well, despite a noticeable delay because of an emergency. We left home at 9.30 and I finally left the hospital at 6.15, eventually arriving home just after 9. We're both very tired today, but relieved to have it all over successfully. Now for the eye drops rota....

This was my second op. The first was on my right eye over 12 years ago and for various reasons was a tricky operation, requiring stitches afterwards. Because the left eye has a twisted optic nerve and had barely a hint of cataract back then, my consultant and I had already decided to ditch the original suggestion of vision correction and simply replace the right lens with one which would leave me still as short-sighted in that eye, but which would match the short sight in my left eye until that eye needed an op. It's a decision I've never regretted because it means I've retained pin-sharp very close vision without glasses, which is very handy for lots of things. Surgery techniques have certainly advanced since I had the first op and everything went very smoothly and quickly. Now for some lovely new vari-focals... 😁

EdithStourton · 15/03/2026 13:49

I'm so pleased it went well (if late), @NotAtMyAge - enjoy the improved vision.

I'm so glad it went smoothly, despite the delay.

I hope all those celebrating Mother's Day are having a lovely day despite the rubbish weather.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/03/2026 14:09

I'm very squeamish so am not reading much of the cataract convo but would like to add that the only person I knew who had it done said that it was like she was seeing butterflies fluttering.

ChristmasStars · 15/03/2026 14:41

That's great @NotAtMyAge

No mother's day here - DC not around today so we will celebrate next week. I did get a card from the cat though. She's very clever.

Anyone get this ad today? We are on it @FuzzyPuffling

DSD got me a card and some Lindt Sea Salt dark chocolate. I never expect anything but it is very lovely particularly as she is no contact with her actual mother.

ChristmasStars · 15/03/2026 15:35

That's lovely Myrtle.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/03/2026 15:35

Lovely news @NotAtMyAge . Yes, the eye drops are a bit of a nuisance, but you're on last lap now. Here's to lovely new glasses!

I've not seen that advertisement Stars and we definitely didn't get up early this morning. But saving a puffin is a very commendable thing to do.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 15/03/2026 15:58

I'm glad everything went well with your eye op @NotAtMyAge and thank you to all those who have been posting reassuring messages regarding cataract operations. I have one developing but my optician thinks it will be a few years yet before it needs to be done.

Also pleased that Mr Fuzzy's news from hospital was positive, if not perfect.

How lovely @MyrtleLion that your DSD has celebrated you on Mother's Day, especially since her relationship with her own mother is not good.

lcakethereforeIam · 15/03/2026 16:24

Fella was told at last optician appointment that he was starting to develop cataracts. I'm okay so far. It's good that I'll have your examples to reassure him if he needs treatment in the future. I'm glad it's going (went) well for you all.

Happy Mother's day 💓

My optometrist told me that we all get cataracts if we live long enough: the speed at which they develop is related to UV exposure, apparently.

Then as residents of the UK we all ought to be immune!

And genetics, which played a part in mine.

I really shouldn't spend so much time walking off into sunsets.

Right. I really don't know what to say about this except, "Sorry!".

All I asked for was a multi-tiered cake with sunglasses on in response to Marie's post, & the AI has added in things from previous images, although where the guitar-playing gerbil came from, I've no idea. As for a cake celebrating one's discharge - words fail me. And why 'United Kingdom'?

Brilliant, Myrts!

Alexandra's jumper one on the WH thread is heartbreaking.

Blooming love the topper though!
