Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

I am watching the rugby, and having my fifth go at the knitted dress. I had to rip it out because I was making a complete mess of the stranded colourwork - I was doing it really badly and it just wouldnt sit smoothly.

I’m on the colour work again, so I am doing g it so slowly and carefully - heaven knows how long the three dresses will take me. Dh is providing sustenance in the form of licorice tea and a hot cross bun.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/03/2026 17:57

Gorgeous capybara Hedgy. Is it Clarissa?

DH and I are home from hospital. He's ok, not 100% but closer than doom. Rest for us both now.

She's been around for a while, since 2019, and she was at the BRIT School.

Her mum is a barrister and was the first black woman to be deputy leader of a political party in Europe when she became Deputy Leader of the Women's Equality Party. Olivia only used female directors for her videos till 2023.

Proper feminist.

That's really interesting thanks Myrtle, 'find out more about that Olivia Dean e.g listen to some of her music' is on my to-do list, and you've saved me some of the word!Smile
She sounds great! She's probably one of those performers who take ages to become overnight successes - like our own Jessie Buckley [fingers crossed for the Oscars!] who is suddenly all over the place from Hollywood to her own cover and feature in Vogue, at the age of 36.
And she's been gigging for years of course, like Olivia D.

Glad to hear that Mr Fuzzy - sorry that should be Mr Puffling as Puffling is your surname isn't itGrin was seen, and given an OK report.

We all want nothing less than 100% health for him and you to enjoy, but I know you will welcome the 'OK'💐
Hope it's a nice relaxed evening Chez PufflingSmile

Thank you Marie.
You can call him what you like- we don't share a surname irl anyway. "Mr Fuzzy" will do very well.
After all his previous health problems, we'll take "ok".

Im very tired now. May I have a few moments of Rosie's time please, and may gFiona and gMarmalade be kind to ne tonight.

EdithStourton · 14/03/2026 18:59

We'll keep Gillian away, Fuzzy. She is quite fond of you and Mr Fuzzy, but she's not what I would call restful company.

Rosie and Quentina the Quokka are on their way, dear Fuzzy, and I hear they're stopping by the Staunch Ally to pick up their friendly bear chums to give Mr Fuzzy a Firm Handshake or Manly Hug, whichever he'd prefer.

You're top of gFiona and gMarmalade's gList, so you should have a well-deserved sleep tonightSmile

Wishing you both well.

My first, very simple, square is done. I would have like to have a second one at least started already but I'm also proofreading dd's dissertation.

Happy Pi Day, everyone. Glad Mr Fuzzy is ok.

Wishing all in the @FuzzyPuffling household a peaceful evening and night.

@NotAtMyAge , I hope your op went well. I’m thinking good thoughts for a simple and steady recovery for you. DH and I have had three eyes done between us, and all are fine now.

I join with the others in hoping your op went well, @NotAtMyAge . My optician tells me I will have to have one of those done eventually, but probably not for a few years, and I must say the thought fills me with dread so it's encouraging to read the positive accounts here.

Don’t dread it, dear @Britinme . I know lots of people who have had theirs done, and all are happy with the result and say it wasn’t a big thing. I’ve had various minor bits of surgery on other parts of me, all with a greater recovery time.

It’s much quicker than a root canal or implant at the dentist, but similar in that you just lie there and keep your head still until it’s over. I was asked if I’d like a nurse’s hand to hold during the procedure: I did, but I didn’t need it.

When Mum had hers done I was worried for her - she had dementia and I thought she might not cope. She came out smiling.

Britinme · 14/03/2026 22:50

That’s good to hear, thank you both. I have a real thing about sharp things near my eyes so I probably will need a hand held.

I've had both eyes 'done' - I am a total big baby/coward when it comes to anything like that😱but honestly, it was totally painless, and the very next day the world looked so much brighter and so much less yellow-tinged😀

I had a bit more sedation because of other conditions, but I know who've had it done with little or none also found it quick and completely painless.

It's not actually surgery - not that I researched the details of what they do, I'd rather not know! but I believe they use ultrasound to remove the blurry lens and then put a nice shiny see-through one in place instead. No surgery, just taking something out and putting something new in its place.

So really truly and honestly it sounds scary but in fact it's not at all.

One is Bob Dylan of course.

I appreciated it when the Academy finally got around to recognising Bob's songwriting to be on a level with Ray Parker Jr.

Hint: the other is a fellow-countryman of ours....

FranticFrankie · 14/03/2026 23:58

Both eyes have had cataracts removed a couple of years ago and I didn't feel a thing
Process is phacoemulsification ( I think) and the lens is broken up (after numbimg eye drops) so it can be sucked out through a hole and the new lens popped in. I was aware of a bit of noise and it was like looking through a car window when you're in a car wash; wet and blurry
No sedation: don't think it was offered. I was given a warm blanket before going into theatre ❤️
But afterwards! The colours! Just need very low level reading glasses now
Recommend it anytime! 👁👁

Best wishes @NotAtMyAge 🌷

George Bernard Shaw?

George Bernard Shaw?

It must be Shaw! The 1930s version of Pygmalion (which I must get around to seeing...)

For a moment I was worried it might have been Famous Seamus.
