The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

Blooming love the topper though!

Great, isn't it? I would've loved the badger on my birthday cake (tail's wrong, though).

Right. I really don't know what to say about this except, "Sorry!".

All I asked for was a multi-tiered cake with sunglasses on in response to Marie's post, & the AI has added in things from previous images, although where the guitar-playing gerbil came from, I've no idea. As for a cake celebrating one's discharge - words fail me. And why 'United Kingdom'?

🤣

All those sunglasses 😎

Love that! AI is clearly taking an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach to Bluestockingers requests.😁

However you look at it I'm in tiers/tears.

My optometrist told me that we all get cataracts if we live long enough: the speed at which they develop is related to UV exposure, apparently.

Well, that's me screwed: I love being outside, and I'm terrible at remembering my sunglasses. mostly because I never know where they are.

Stands to reason really, although I had several arguments conversations with FIL about why I insisted on the boys wearing hats and sunglasses. He would not accept that UV exposure would do anything to your eyes, despite having had cataracts himself.

I don't own sunglasses because my varifocal lenses are too expensive. I'm rethinking that now.

I got a free pair with my extortionate day-to-day specs at Specsavers.

I sadly gave up on our independent optician because it was so bloody expensive.

I spend over a grand on my glasses, so I buy clip-on polarising sunglasses, or ones that sit over my normal glasses. Haven't been able to afford prescription sunglasses for many years!
I'm also your classic freckled blue-skinned Celt, so I'm just generally paranoid about sun exposure.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2026 19:38

I’ve no signs of cataracts yet. A few years ago they thought I had a little spot of macular degeneration so I’ve been quite religious about using sunglasses since then - the MD hasn’t been noted since so not sure if it was real but the sunnies are a good idea anyway.

Britinme · 15/03/2026 19:43

I'm so glad it went well for you @NotAtMyAge .

I had video calls from my two UK offspring, which was nice as I'd actually forgotten about UK Mother's Day.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2026 20:23

I’ve just got off the phone after a nice chat with my DD too.Smile

And DS and I had a very enjoyable video call just before supper. 🤗

My optometrist recommended prescription sunglasses.

I now have regular glasses which came with one set of yellow night time driving lenses and one set of polarised lenses. I keep them in the car so that I can swap around.

Mind you, I've maybe left it too late. I already have the floaters of old age...

I had a 'change' in the macula (one eye) spotted in 2013. It apparently improved (!), but I'm staving it off as long as I can.

I was taking the tablets, but they don't agree with my stomach. My optometrist recommended that I remember to eat eggs.

I have 'sun damage' on my face. I've never been a sunbather...but I was one of the kids from deprived areas stuck in front of a sun lamp at the local health clinic in the early '60s.

Lucky me.

A few, actually a fair few years ago fella and I got our kitchen sorted out. Our old kitchen was rank. I can't believe how many years we put up with it. We had a tile floor laid, initially it looked lovely. After a few months I noticed there was a grubby bit I couldn't get clean. Closer inspection revealed it to be some grouting that hadn't been wiped off the tile surface but just left to dry there. I tried all sorts to remove it with no success. It was just a minor niggle, probably nobody noticed it except me, but it bugged me. Anyway it finally occurred to me to look on the interweb for ideas to shift it. Steam cleaner! My floor is now free of rogue grout. I feel weightless.

Tldr, stray speck of unsightly grout finally removed. Cake rises.

I go to ASDA. A pair of varifocal glasses, slight tinted ones for driving in glare, big dark sunglasses like Audrey Hepburn all for less than £250. All varifocal prescription with anti scratch coatings etc for free.
I then bought a computer pair (near sight and mid sight for about £50.

@ChristmasStars did some more knitting but can't post, so here they are.

I thought you were going to say that it turned out that the speck was a flaw in your vision, not on the floor and you were fruitlessly trying to scrub off😄
