Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

A friend died Tuesday night, we were not really close (but known her since the 1990’s) and i knew it was coming, her close friends were with her and let me know.

she was 57, cancer took her very quickly.

i did her mums garden (2 acres) so saw her all the time, as she lived there too. I think that is what knocked me sideways.

She was a very unpolitical lesbian, until she noticed what was going on whilst ill and unable to work.

So she was keen to chat about all that.

So i painted my kitchen all day since, what a bloody palaver all the prep and masking off Before a paint brush got a look in.

Only half done.

my son bought me a lovely bag, and a cuddly toy that is a capabarra, for mums day which is lovely.

the best bit though is his card

I always forget UK Mothers Day - ours is later, in May I think. Luckily my two kids in the UK usually remember a card, so effectively I get two Mothers Days because my US-based DS and DDIL always remember the US one.

G'night to everybody, the Sleep and Dream Gerbils are going to be busy tonight, bringing healing rest to those who need it..🌛

Hope your journey and the op go well @NotAtMyAge and that you're able to enjoy the return journey when you can see the beautiful scenery more easily.

Sorry for the loss of your friend @Hedgehogforshort and at such a (relatively young age). What a lovely card from your son😊

And thank you sleep gerbils, I had 8 hours sleep last night - unheard of! And the sun is shining this morning which is an added bonus.😁

About to head up to bed for an early night in preparation for a very long day tomorrow. We'll be making a 165 mile round trip on rural Welsh roads between darkest Mid-Wales and the outskirts of Swansea for my cataract op. Thankfully I don't have to be there until 1.15, so no crack of dawn departure, unlike my first op some years ago in Aberystwyth (a mere 80 mile round trip) when I had to be there by 8am! I'm really not an early morning person nowadays...

See you (better)when it's all over. x

I had my cataracts done just over a year ago. Most definitely worth it and strangely interesting. The "light show" you get during the op is fascinating - mine was like rapid clouds in a bright blue sky. At the time I commented to them surgeon " I've never taken LSD, but I imagine it's like this".

He also managed to make a huge difference my astigmatism, no more expensive thin lenses for me.

I've worn glasses since I was three. This has been a revelation!

Good luck, and don't worry.

I had a woooowwww maaaaaan light show too, but I thought it was the sedation.
Mine was mostly pink, edging into lilac in places.
It was fascinating.
I never did drugs, but that made me wonder what I'd been missing😄

Go well, NotAt - it'll be grandSmile

Good to hear the S&D Gerbils did the biz for Damson, they had a lot on their plate last night with several Stockingers going through a lot and needing a good night's sleep..

SionnachRuadh · 14/03/2026 11:10

Drugs have never much appealed to me, but maybe that's a strict generational thing where your childhood involves watching weird ass fillums like Time Bandits and Flash Gordon and the daddy of them all Pollux et le chat bleu. After all that, and maybe a few Frank Zappa records in your teens, you don't feel that you're missing much.

MarieDeGournay · 14/03/2026 11:38

I'm absolutely not going to buy this 'Yousheng Cartoon Donkey Pillow Cover Zippered Cute Animal Pillowcase Decorative Throw Pillow Cover for Car Sofa Couch' but it made me smile, they look like they've had one too many Bluestocking Gargleblaster Specials😄

My first ever concert was Frank Zappa in the Carl-Diem Halle in Wuerzburg. I was about 13 possibly, went with my brother who is five years older.

I never got to see Frank himself. I've seen Dweezil playing Frank's stuff, which was fun.

There's a very long list of artists I've seen in concert who are now deid, and I think I've got an unconscious "see them while they're still here" attitude. I'm still a bit haunted by seeing Warren Zevon on what turned out to be his last tour, when he'd had to cancel a few shows because of bronchitis, and it turned out later that it wasn't bronchitis.

I noted that the great 'breakthrough artist' at the 2026 Brit Awards was Olivia Dean, exciting new talent etc etc. is aged 27!

She's starting her career at the age Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones, had theirs ended.

She's been around for a while, since 2019, and she was at the BRIT School.

Her mum is a barrister and was the first black woman to be deputy leader of a political party in Europe when she became Deputy Leader of the Women's Equality Party. Olivia only used female directors for her videos till 2023.

Proper feminist.

I saw Dizzie Gillespie and Miles Davis (not together) in Munich what might have been for both of them their last tour. I'm glad I did. I also saw Bob Dylan live in Corvallis, Oregon in 2000 or 2001.
I love live music, there's nothing better. I'm travelling for work the week after next and I am a little annoyed that there is a folk festival happening in the town I'm going but it ends the weekend before I get there.

That is extraordinarily cute, I'd be very tempted but I'd have do some due diligence. There seems to be a lot of stuff that's been sexed up with AI.

Yes - I copied some photos & crochet patterns off FB because they looked amazing (mouse/gerbil scarves, gorgous cats etc), before I realised the patterns didn't match the photos. 😥
