Olivia Colman: “I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man.” 🙄

Olivia Colman is currently on the press tour for her new film Jimpa and has come out with some absolute corkers in an interview with them "magazine" including:

"Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I've always felt sort of nonbinary. Don’t make that a big sort of title! But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female. I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, “Yeah, I get that.”"

Which I can only assume means he likes it when she pegs him.

And a dig at some undefined group of naysayers and haters and meanies:

"Most of the actors were from, particularly in the Dutch side of things, from the queer community there; I’ve never been part of a more welcoming group of people. For all those naysayers or haters or meanies, if [only] they could spend the time with the most welcoming, kind bunch of people. I kind of want everyone to just come and say hi and actually feel total love."

Jimpa stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, mother to the non-binary Frances (played by they/them, non-binary, queer, transgender daughter of the film's director, Aud Mason-Hyde) who go to Amsterdam to visit Hannah's gay HIV positive father (John Lithgow, currently simultaneously scorned by the queers for daring to be in the new Harry Potter series, any by the meanies for talking shit about JKR). I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Congratulations Olivia on your brave coming out as a queer, non-binary, gay man, spicy-straight woman. You're so late to the party all the cool kids will find your identity embarrassing now.

Omg - how embarrassing for her! Or is this some weird method acting???

In a nutshell, she has been very vocal in stating that trans women are women. She’s far from being the only actor/entertainer to say this, but I am vastly more disappointed by this from her as I have always loved her work and admired her ‘don’t give a fuck’ attitude.

Agreed but she obviously does give a fuck, a very big fuck indeed, about pleasing those who she thinks needs to be pleased.

Gloriia · 07/02/2026 09:37

OC took part in an open letter with other silly celebs requesting the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah a 'British Egyptian' held in Egypt. On release, all his old tweets surfaced where he was clearly a vile anti semitie and terrorist supporter. She didn't as far as I know release any statement to retract her comments once she knew exactly what she was supporting.

These half baked celebs just have no clue about anything. As an aside her accent in The NightManager was hilarious, sack the voice coach.

She would have got the same effect if she'd gone to a public place, lifted her head to the skies and bellowed 'Loook at meee!! Loook at meee! I'm so interesting!!!' but she has unfortunately chosen to immortalise her navel gazing announcement to print.

On the other hand, the cringeness of the whole thing will undoubtedly help with teenagers turning away from the whole enby/non binary nonsense because there's nothing like announcing you're so unique and special to find everyone's doing it.

Must admit, I assumed she was doing that reverse psychology that we often talk about - once all the middle aged women en masse identify as NB, the young will decide it's no longer interesting or exciting and move on?

Brainworm · 07/02/2026 09:38

’…for all those naysayers or haters or meanies’

This is key. Presumably this phrasing excludes those who are committing violence and harm against gay and trans people and is more focussed on those who ‘take issue’ with certain sexualities and forms of ‘gender expression’.

Within the group of those who ‘take issue’, broadly speaking, there are two groups. There are the conservatives wanting to uphold traditional social norms and structures and there are others who do not have concerns about sexuality or gender expression per ce, but some of the consequences that come from initiative to ‘enable inclusion and participation’.

I have no idea if Coleman is one of those who doesn’t engage her brain to think critically about what she is actually saying (beyond we should all just be kind to each other and then all will be fine) or one of those who is strategically seeking to group everyone with concerns into one group of ‘objectionables’. I guess she could be somewher inbetween.

There is a pattern of people thinking on broad generalisations. Grouping LGB with T, grouping T so it includes fetishists with young autistic people, group ‘haters’ so they include people with murderous intent against homosexuals with women who want female only changing rooms.

The solution to this is amplifying the nuance. I advocate for doing this in all instances, which often put me at odds with posters in this board, interpreting this as succumbing to #be kind. My # is #honourthecomplexity -which OC is clearly failing to do, whatever her motive.

Is this a long winded way to explain she prefers her hair short?

👏👏👏👏

Theeyeballsinthesky · 07/02/2026 09:44

also "haters and meanies" does she also identity as 12 years old?

usedtobeaylis · 07/02/2026 09:46

She sounds like she opens her mouth and lets any old waffle out sometimes.

My daughter was 7 or 8 when she cottoned on that there were quite a lot of girl gamers saying they were non binary and connected it to conversations about sexism and stereotypes that we'd had precisely because wee boys were telling her girls couldn't be gamers. Olivia Colman isn't stupid either, she's just a daft waffler.

Maybe she wants to use her platform to be an ally.

Maybe she has a different view on this from you.

I think that's allowed. Even though she's a middle aged woman.

Or maybe she’s just daft and says silly things.

These slebs just can't bear to be ordinary, they are so wrapped up in how talented, special and fabulous they are that they cannot possibly deal with only being heterosexual, even though most of them are. They probably also believe we care about the drivel they spout, they aren't geniuses or massive talents, they just happen to be fairly photogenic, got lucky and are good at pretending. Probably shocked that they can't walk on water.

"Good at pretending" - acting in a nutshell! Love it.

ZookeeperSE · 07/02/2026 08:54

This was my take away. I think they all have to, to some extent. And I haven’t yet decided if I feel slightly sorry for them or if I think they’re all tiny brained dickheads.

However, this:
But I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female
I agree with. I’ve never found myself flouncing around thinking oh goodness I’m such a womanly woman, being all womanly doing my womanly things. I mean, who does? Ohhh…..

Well yes. I agree with that too.

BUT the point is society doesn't give a fuck how womanly I feel. Rapists don't pause because their victim is wearing a male tracksuit; employers don't save the maternity discrimination for women with manicures; men who comment on the size of a woman's tits don't check her pronouns first.

Whilst declaring oneself NB in showbiz might be a clever move, the ideology does nothing to liberate women from patriarchy.

Oh well that's me cut up the quick!

I shall immediately decide men can miraculously become women and that it isn't all offensive to gay men for a middle aged women to declare she feels like a gay man because she has short hair and doesn't feel feminine

Woodfiresareamazing · 07/02/2026 09:53

dreichluver · 07/02/2026 01:04

Imagine making up a 'queer' version of yourself just to garner attention for a film you're worried will bomb. Honestly I think the writing was on the wall as soon as the director cast her 'they/them' daughter.

And will gay men be charmed knowing that Olivia equates them to non-binary females? I think not.

I've always found her insufferable. A 'luvvie' of the highest order.

I can't think of any reason why I would pay to see this film. I can think of many why I won't be...

SemperIdem · 07/02/2026 09:54

Olivia Colman is a good actress but in every interview I’ve ever seen, comes across as a nauseating luvvie for whom everything is dramatic and has little connection to what is happening in the real world.

Hi Olivia.

RedToothBrush · 07/02/2026 09:56

I can't wait for Olivia's starring role in a TV production playing a gay man.

She's big enough to have a whole role written for her. Perhaps she can ask Russell T Davis to come up with the goods.

SirChenjins · 07/02/2026 09:57

Agree. She's obviously an excellent actress - and her best role is the 'I'm mad, me <tinkly laugh, gurn gurn> ' one that she's carved out for herself.

AnSolas · 07/02/2026 09:58

hholiday · 07/02/2026 08:07

Not really. She's a gay man, remember?

🙊💥
🤣

PrimalScreaming · 07/02/2026 10:00

Olivia is my generation. Not sure what she was doing while I was in the closet... a teenager petrified of anybody noticing my sexuality. Or when I had to come out to (actually really supportive) parents in the 80s and have a strategy for if I was rejected by them. Clause 28, Olivia?
It's all performative bollocks which negates and belittles lived experience.

EmpressDomesticatednottamed · 07/02/2026 10:01

Always?
"Aaargh, uhh pant... and by the way....grrrraaaah....I'd like to make it clear....bbbbbbrrrrughhhh....that I always describe myself as a gay man.....yyyeeuuuurrghhhh pant puff...."

"But Olivia, I can see the head!"

KittyWilkinson · 07/02/2026 10:01

As an aside, I think she looks very like Peggy Mount.
Who was an excellent actress and much respected.

CapacityBrown · 07/02/2026 10:03

Sounds like she's identifying as circumgender.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 07/02/2026 10:06

OC is someone that everyone seems to like and find endearing, except me. That is not likely to change anytime soon.
