If Mumsnet is now backing Reform UK, it’s over for Starmer’s Labour

Have just seen there is a thead about this on chat.

My response was yours. Just another stupid over the top newspaper headline.

But the replies on the chat thread are that mumsnet has become and is now rightwing anyway. (not sure which parts of MN chat contributors mainly use.

This!!

Where is this on MN? I've been looking but all I can find are threads discussing the result.

Where are the papers getting their info?

IwantToRetire · 05/01/2026 17:32

Agree, its a bit like those wind up contributors on FWR who go on on and about how it is really right wing.

Whereas (IMO) the majority are politically homeless.

Have lost faith in Labour, would like to be Green but cant because the TRAs are in control.

Sadly now that the MSM have joined in the mistrepresentation the left media has always push about MN this will just increase the false image.

So slightly less than the general population, then?

weegielass · 05/01/2026 17:33

Reform's website indicates they are gender critical but publicly it appears not.

(I don't have a clue who I'd vote for yet)

Go to chat. Its easy to find. Or rather I could and I never use chat.

If you read the article is gives info about the survey.

Not sure what happened on the Chat thread but it seems MNHQ got a bit heavy with deletions, and has now apologised and re-instated.

I post not because I believe it, but like it or not screaming headlines like this have more impact than is rational.

ie people dont read newspapers that much any more but will this in a shop or on one of the silly newspaper discussion panels, where they take the headlines as serious and never challenge the false narrative the paper is pushing.

It’s a press release by mnhq which was picked up by the media.

The reason why is due to a poll always being Labour but no longer being the case. For the first time since 2009.

Igmum · 05/01/2026 18:01

Wasn’t there a poll a few months ago that said 43% of Nigel Farage’s mum voters were going to vote Reform? So Mumsnetters are less likely than the general public to vote Reform?

Fimofriend · 05/01/2026 18:01

Reporters are not very good at math, are they?

Pingponghavoc · 05/01/2026 18:05

I don't think the labour party and labour faithfuls realise how alienated they are from normies and their issues.

The fact that they arent quiet as bonkers as your party or the greens, and that labour policy is to blame the tories for everying, isnt the winning strategy they think it is.

Calling people racists, denying it is happening or accusing people of being daft enough to vote because of a headline is just a reflection of the snobbery of the political left.

The best thing the left could do is listen and learn from voters and introduce policy people want.

Why? This is from mnhq

ScholesPanda · 05/01/2026 18:05

Given that they are in the lead nationally it's not that surprising, possibly made more so because Labour have always been in the lead, even when the Tories were nationally.

It'll be interesting to see what effect a Reform government would have on women and feminism. My gut and my limited knowledge of their policies would say it's more likely to be beneficial if you're married, older and have a higher earning husband. Possibly also good financially if you're a childless high-earner, although you might get attacked rhetorically for not 'doing your duty' and having children. Could be worse if taxes have to increase on the unmarried to pay for lower taxes for married couples.

Probably not as great if you're a single mother, reliant on employment flexibilities or public sector employment; or a younger woman trying to navigate dating in the age of Andrew Tate.

TempestTost · 05/01/2026 18:05

One out of five hardly constitutes "mumsnet voting reform," but it is an interesting development, especially when there has been a growing split between women's and men's political intentions.

I cam't say it is a surprise though, a lot of voters, imo, want to punish the major parties, or show them that they don't own people's votes if they don't deliver.

EasternStandard · 05/01/2026 18:09

It’s because of this graph. It’s the first time since 2009 the red Labour line isn’t top. So they put out a press release and the media picked it up.

Pingponghavoc · 05/01/2026 18:13

Its the swing from labour to reform and none of the above. MN doesnt have to be representative of the country, but if even previously labour voters arent intending to vote left, who will?

Labour won with a low turn out, so could reform if labour or tories cant get people to vote for them.

This.

Stupid headline, but it is significant that Labour aren't top of the MN polls for the first time in 16 years. And the post from @Pingponghavoc encapsulates how oblivious and complacent Labour are. They're giving it away to Reform currently.

When will they learn?!

Edited as I stupidly forgot to say it was a MN poll, not a general poll.

goldenplacemat · 05/01/2026 18:26

I hope not, it just encourages racism and American denting of woman’s rights.

The headline works? If mn is as below in that graph then it is one of the few places that is usually Labour which isn’t anymore.

KanesEyes · 05/01/2026 18:30

I find this utterly fascinating. When I joined mumsnet, many moons ago, it was distinctly left leaning. I am broadly centre/right in many ways so found a lot of it frustrating at times, however there definitely has been a rumbling change on these boards since Labour came into force.

I'm not sure if I'll vote Reform (if I do, it will be tactically against Labour) but the tide is certainly turning.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I read it as 'MN is backing Reform' when only 20% do?

Going by that graph, as far as I can make out, the swing is from Labour to…None/Not sure/Wouldn't Vote.

That I can believe. But is not as clickbait of a headline.

It just means it’s overtaken Labour and Labour isn’t the top for the first time since 2009
