Where was the picture? Why was it there? Who is the artist?

Belfast Exposed is an photography gallery that shares a building with BFF. I'm not sure exactly which exhibition this particular image (sci-fi penis pumps used as breast pumps) was in, but it was an 'installation' with the artist doing manicures next to the exhibits, rather than just photos hung on walls.

I mean, this in and of itself sounds like a very difficult workplace?

A case all on its own for the women who had to attend the location and participate in this man's fetish.

Gross

borntobequiet · 19/11/2025 08:18

I’m not convinced that art should be “challenging”, especially when it demonstrates just how deluded the artist is in thinking his or her ideas original, sophisticated or clever when in fact they’re juvenile, poorly informed and depressingly conventional.

DeanElderberry · 19/11/2025 08:23

I can't stand self-consciously 'challenging' art, I am not going to google penis pumps, I am going to hope that they are something agricultural used by AI companies preparing their straws.

But putting that image on a wall that a woman has to walk past while doing her job sounds like a disciplinary offence all on its own.

ProfessorOfAllTheThings · 19/11/2025 08:24

It looks like you can see all past exhibitions. They don't seem to be highlighting the scifititpump exhibition though.

Lots and lots of Queer exhibitions though. Apparently alone answers the questions 'what is Queer Art?' 'Who is a Queer Artist?' and is art through a Queer Feminist lens.

Edited

I think art can be challenging (am not persuaded that this art was not just provocative) but I don’t think challenging art should be forced on unconsenting viewers. In a gallery that you can choose to enter or not? Fine. In the foyer of a workplace that dozens of people have to walk through on a daily basis? No. It shouldn’t be a condition of me getting to my work place that I have to view fetishistic art.

ProfessorOfAllTheThings · 19/11/2025 08:29

I wonder if this was it:

Sanctuaries: Queer Artist Forum at Belfast Exposed
Belfast Exposed will play host to a specially commissioned exhibition by the Queer Artist Forum, a group of local lens-based artists, that will be on display in the gallery’s Studio space throughout the month of July, as part of Belfast’s Pride celebrations.

This is the second group exhibition facilitated by Belfast Exposed, the first having been shown earlier this year on the walls of Embrace Style, the gender-neutral hair and beauty salon on east Belfast’s Holywood Road.

This new show, entitled ‘Sanctuaries’, will feature the work of five local artists, each tackling themes of both religious and broader cultural judgement of queer individuals, and their forms of resistance.
The Queer Artist Forum was founded in early 2023 with the support of Belfast Exposed following ‘She / Her / Hers /Herself’, an exhibition by socially engaged Australian artist Anthony Luvera.

The Forum is hosted monthly in the gallery space where ‘Sanctuaries’ will be on display, and provides a space for discussion, peer-to-peer engagement, as well as artistic and career development for lens-based visual artists in the queer community.

The artists featured are Hannah McGirr, Ryan Allen, Aidan Geary, Molly Qualter, and Vesper MacKenzie.

So this was an art exhibition in their building?

Who was the art by? Why was it there?

Presumably a shared building?

No one thought that was a bit much in the lobby?

Given that X wouldn't let NW post the picture.....

It was an exhibition by a trans identifying man - I think the person in the photo actually.

He sat giving out manicures for the whole time - so sitting there seeking out physical contact with women surrounded by pictures of his massive fake boobs in large glass bell jars and wires.

In the lobby of their building.

How lovely and so family friendly

Absolutely

thirdfiddle · 19/11/2025 08:38

So did she in fact say not next to /that/ meaning the fetish art, and Devlin squirreled away "that" meaning the artist? Excuse my ignorance of dialect, do Irish people also say "by" for next to?

Justme56 · 19/11/2025 08:39

If you look on Luvera’s Instagram there are plenty of photos (which I assumed were used) including the nail bar at the exhibition.

I think she is alleged to have referred to 'it'

I can imagine that under pressure in such an uncomfortable environment of someone suggested engaging with it more - you could say many things to mean or express 'I want to get away'

SM says she said no such thing though.

But I can imagine just blindly wanting to get away and lacking articulacy in that moment.

Ah now I understand properly, and perfectly see how anyone might be repulsed.

What a knob. Literally.

I roll off it onto hands and knees then pull myself up on any nearby object.

Obviously I am a vision of grace and beauty whilst doing so.

thats what mum said
('a vision of grace and beauty')

Re: 'it' the art versus 'it' the artist.

Most non pronoun-addled people familiar with English language usage would assume the art.

ProfessorVegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/11/2025 08:49

In our house we have a Special Method with butter. At the moment the butter dish sits on a shelf in the living room where it stays spreadable. In spring and autumn it lives in the kitchen. In summer we use two butter bells, each holding half a block of butter, with one sitting in the kitchen and the other in the fridge. Butter bells are brilliant.

"A French butter dish is a cylindrical container used to maintain the freshness and spreadable consistency of butter without refrigeration. Butter is kept in what appears to be the lid, inverted, and submerged in water held in the base"

There are so many questions about responsibility and vulnerability raised in those articles.

Luvera started working with 'Sarah' on a project that focused on one thing and one thing only, at a time that Sarah had not sought support or guidance from anyone, nor spoken to their doctor about their obvious mental distress. They together carried out an obsessive project involving frequent contact via many means, hundreds if not thousands of photographs, all centred on Sarah's self identifying as a woman.

The lack of responsibility, safeguarding and care is jaw dropping

This is a safe for work photo of the trans identifying man in the exhibition surrounding by cows 🐄

"SW: Since I came out as trans, I’ve found it can be a lot harder to get people to trust me. And sometimes it’s not about what work you’ve done, it’s how you come across to people. I’m excited to meet people in the gallery and take appointments for Nail Bar."

This all just seems so ridiculously naive and cruel of those around them.

People find it hard to trust me.

Also let me fondle your hand with cream with a big photo of me milking myself next to photos of cows. 🐄

Wonder why?
