this is fantastic news. The background to their story is however concerning. It should have never got this bad.

They've been bullied by their fellow students for holding extraordinary views like 'men can't become women' and 'women deserve single sex spaces'.

Bullied by whom? Must be other women/teacher facility. I just can't imagine straight men being against women saying "meant can't be women".

I believe it's students in general. Does it matter what sex they are?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/12/2025 14:23

You think because the institution is privileged overall there can’t be bullying in it?
I’m sure all the kids who were abused at elite public schools over the years wish that was the case.

No, but I think the women in question are more than likely privileged, especially compared to the rest of the population.

I'm non-white. Would you like to retract that ignorant statement of yours?

That is a fact about yourself that no-one can know on an anonymous forum, so any offence was unwitting and unintended and I apologise for it. However standing up in public among your peers for a belief which goes against the zeitgeist is not the same thing and these young women really are brave to do so. Being totally ostracised by erstwhile friends is deeply hurtful at any age, but particularly when you're young.

Of course it does. Lets not pretend Cambridge is 30% trans or something, and if most abuse are not coming from straight men, then how would a woman only society help things? Sure the women against them just join and continue there.

You need to go on social media like X and see the abuse aimed by straight men at women who dare to stand up for women's sex-based rights. It's known as misogyny and is as old as human society.

Many “trans” are straight men, hth.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/12/2025 14:39

Anyway, you clearly know very little about this issue, so I’ll leave it there, but hopefully why it’s brave for these young women to do this has been explained to you sufficiently 🤷‍♀️

I'm led to believe that they believe "men can't be women". So the abuse is calling them transphobic or the fact they are doing a "woman only society". If its the Trans thing, I just cannot imagine the majority of straight men caring or being against that belief. As straight men would have more influence. If it's the later and people are against a woman only group......I thought that already existed at Cambridge University.

Have you fundamentally misunderstood the issue here? Thea, Maeve, Serena et al found that all the student societies claiming to be for women were in fact including men who dress up as women or even claiming to be women. So the Lesbian society includes both female lesbians & men who claim that they too are lesbians. They have suffered a great deal of abuse for merely forming a society for women that included only women.

You didn't explain anything. You just got defensive and said "it's brave because I say so". You need to learn to debate and detach your ego from a conversation 🙄.

I'm sorry, is this supposed to be an example of debating skill? Because it just sounds like a personal attack.

Well you should have said that of the start instead of getting ego centric. However, I still don't see the bravery in it. Lets not act they're fighting apartheid. Also, as I have stated several times, I just cannot see how straight males (the majority/influential) would care about it as it doesn't affect them. Unless an "all men society " wasn't allowed/disbanded.

Can say it's commendable, but brave.

The vast majority of the population believe men can't be women, though not all of them are willing to stand up and say so, because it's seen as "unkind" to do so. Until now there have been no women-only groups at Cambridge which are specifically restricted to those born female and won't admit men who say they are women. That is seen as transphobic by most students today.

I believe that Thea, at least, has suffered significant ostracisation due to some uncontroversial comments and had slurs carved into her accommodation doors.

These young women are very brave considering the degree of rejection and abuse they face for founding this group publicly.

That is primarily woman fault. Many thought defending trans benefited women in some daft ideology. Would have been easier to get this society passed/allowed if they partnered with straight men or allowed men to have their own space too. Allyship/scratch my back if I scratch your back.

What slur could "Thea" face? Is she not white? The mistake she and the others made is not getting ally ship from straight males. I know that's not nice to say, but it's the quickest way to get protection from hate from other groups.

Because there are numerous male people in positions of influence who are supportive of male people with transgender identities being treated as if they are female. It doesn’t matter a jot whether those male people are heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual.

They do so because of their political ideals, their future aspirations or because they will support any male person above a female person, or simply cannot understand the needs of female people. There are plenty of reasons why those male people will prioritise male people with transgender identities above female people.

However, the issue for these three young women and the negative impact on them is not restricted to the group of men you seem keen to restrict the issue to.

She had TERF carved into her door.

And TERF is indeed a slur in its usage to dehumanise women to abuse, intimidate and threatened them.

Does anyone remember a poster called (I think) MagicMagpie? I would have liked to shake her hand. I hope she's doing OK.
