Helen Joyce - why gender medicine isn’t science…

“Actually that’s not quite right, because there isn’t any requirement to perform your gender, just to state it. Nothing further than the statement is required of the person making it: it’s other people who have to do the work by believing that statement — that is, by “affirming” that gender. The expression “gender self-identification” is a misnomer — it’s not something you have to do, beyond proclamation, it’s a demand that other people affirm you as being the gender you state yourself to be. Opening the door marked F or M is a way of declaring your gender identity.

There’s no place for other people’s judgment, indeed no role at all for other people except as supporting actors or appreciative audience. No room for them to say they don’t fancy joining in the performance, or to be a critic and say it’s not a very good performance. They’re not allowed to say: “OK, you say you’re a woman, that you’re living as a woman or have a female gender identity, but you don’t seem very female to me.”

Why gender medicine isn’t science, and isn’t medicine, Part 1

"You may think you have many things in common with women, but that does not make you a woman. I don’t understand how anybody could truly believe that to be the case."

What people theoretically think make a woman isn't reflected in practice as we rarely distinguish men from women via gametal checks in social situations rather typical surface presentation.

What an absolutely bizarre take.
You do not qualify as a woman.
What if you have been born into an Amazon tribe full of fierce female warriors, I guess you would’ve thought yourself a man in that situation.

Either way they don't cause sterilisation.

Do you understand what sterilisation means?

A child who takes puberty blockers to prevent a natural puberty, then goes straight on to opposite sex hormones, never reaches sexual maturity.

That child has been sterilised due to the prevention of a natural puberty which is the only way someone reaches sexual maturity.

SinnerBoy · 21/10/2025 12:59

Howseitgoin · 21/10/2025 11:15

Nope. They pause puberty temporarily only.

Absolute bollocks.

Ahhhh so now its hormones not puberty blockers that cause sterilisation. You got there finally!

I know perfectly well what Gillick competence is & it doesn't mean that you are an adult at 16. I remember the Gillick case well. It was about consent to treatment & it didn't go the way Mrs Gillick hoped or expected.

In the UK any person under the age of eighteen is a child.

Edited

Gillick competence:

"Children under the age of 16 can consent to their own treatment if they're believed to have enough intelligence, competence and understanding to fully appreciate what's involved in their treatment. This is known as being Gillick competent."

However, I think Cass found that nobody, including the doctors understand what is involved in the treatment, hence ban on prescription of puberty blockers, so Gillick competence is rather by the by.

OldCrone · 21/10/2025 13:01

I'm starting to wonder if Howse thinks that puberty blockers + opposite sex hormones actually change someone's sex.

Perhaps he thinks that a girl who doesn't go through puberty, then is given testosterone actually becomes a man, with fully functioning male reproductive organs.

Puberty blockers -> hormone deficiency -> sterilisation ?

suggest you look up Pearls book on causality

puberty blocks cause sterilisation via the medium of how they interact with hormones

Err it wasn't banned as in still available under trial conditions as proven upthread.

You really need to spend more time reading up on this topic, rather than brief AI summaries. You might then have a better understanding.

Howseitgoin · 21/10/2025 12:20

I never claimed any such thing. Maybe time to step away from the prosecco?

If gender affirming medicine is so effective there should be evidence of a reduction in morbidity & mortality from the days before it was available. Unless of course "trans" is a social contagion that didn't exist until a few years ago.

BTW Your oft repeated snide misogynist remark is wide of the mark this time as I am both male & teetotal.

Well they might just beat a mob of 'credentialed' facebook wowsers…

The list of credentials for Dr Hilary Cass OBE, FRCP, FRCPCH:

-Consultant in Paediatric Disability
-Director of Postgraduate Medical Education and Deputy Medical Director at Great Ormond St Hospital
-Senior Clinical Advisor to Health Education England,
-Chair of the British Academy of Childhood Disability
-President of the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health
-Trustee of Together for Short Lives (children's palliative care charity)

If it's acknowledged scientific expertise you're interested in, why haven't you bothered to read her report?

So hormones are the 'missing ingredient' now?

Please, you're embarrassing yourself.

I think we have agreed that there is yet to be a trial? That ethical approval is being sought? It amounts to the same thing though - nobody understands the consequences of using GnRH analogues for this purpose.

I would report your posts, but I think it's important for lurkers to see that lies and shit-stirring is all that the TRAs have left.

That would be nice if anyone kept any accurate records let alone people admitted the real reason they were suicidal back in the olden days…

Now even some of the gender doctors are rowing back on puberty blockers for children.

Marci Bowers, former president of WPATH, said in 2021 that puberty blockers for children weren't a good thing and admitted that social contagion was driving the increase in trans-identifying children.

Yes yes, I'm sure you know more than the high court of appeals dear…

What is the "high court of appeals" of which you speak? Is it something they have in your country? We have a Court of Appeal in the UK which is hearing a very interesting case today & tomorrow which you can catch on YouTube.

In the UK anyone under the age of eighteen is a child.

@Howseitgoin
I’m starting to feel embarrassed for you. Please stop making a fool of yourself.

Howseitgoin · 21/10/2025 13:16

Remember this gem:

The review concluded that the evidence base and rationale for early puberty suppression was unclear, which led to a UK ban on prescribing puberty blockers to those under 18 experiencing gender dysphoria (with the exception of existing patients or those in a clinical trial).[21] The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust was closed in March 2024 and replaced in April with two new services, which are intended to be the first of eight regional centres.[22] In August, the pathway by which patients are referred to gender clinics was revised and a review of adult services commissioned.[23] In September, the Scottish government accepted the findings of a multidisciplinary team that NHS Scotland had set up to consider how the Cass Review's recommendations could best apply there.[24] In England a delayed clinical trial into puberty blockers is planned for 2025.[25][26]

It's also extremely unlikely that there is ever going to be a clinical trial of puberty blockers as it's impossible for either the child or parent to provide informed consent.

Howie's problem is that his constant use of google doesn't reflect the numerous laws in the UK and how they and legal judgements intersect and are qualified. Which is why he thinks he's right in quoting one court case - when he's evidently not.

His mind would be blown if he had to consider how Gillick & Fraser intersect with different issues - medical, sexual, disability / SEN / competency etc - and all the nuanced judgments entailed when discussing the rights versus the protection of children.

Abbigail Shrier of the great Rapid Onset Gender Dyshoria scam?

Imagine making millions off flogging a book on bogas research that was based off surveying disgruntled parents from anti trans forums on what they guessed was the causal effect AND never bothering to ask their kids? 😂

Nice work if you can get it…
