Is this is the stupidest attack on JK Rowling yet?

Canadians’ eagerness to please has left them hopelessly vulnerable to the #BeKind mantra.

As a result, they sometimes do and say some very silly things. For proof, see the story this week about the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, whose members have issued a tearful public apology – for organising a “magical-themed forest walk” inspired by Harry Potter.

Trans activists were horrified, because Harry Potter was created by JK Rowling. So, to avoid causing them further trauma, the walk has been cancelled. At an emergency meeting, Brennan Bastyovanszky, a park board commissioner, promised to “do better in the future”. Later, his colleague Tom Digby tweeted: “Apologised to TGD2S [Transgender, Gender-Diverse and Two-Spirit] community after emotional discussion. Shared some tears. Disavowed JKR.”

As a woman who grew up in Canada. I will say the overall vibe in Canada is that Harry Potter is okay, but J.K. Rowling is not. Some mums in Ontario started a group for buying Harry Potter items used so as not to give J.K. money directly, because so many kids loved the story and were upset when told they couldn't read/watch it. I personally do not support J.K. Rowling or her views, just giving my opinion on how it's viewed in Canada.

Edited

So, as a lesbian/LGB woman, what is it about women's rights that you disagree with?

A quick update (from X). Gather the apology was about future events - too late to stop the one this year. It seems like ticket sales have been exceptionally high and Harry Potter is as popular as ever.

I'm not into HP but it looks like fun to me. Even more so if you are a fan I'd guess

quixote9 · 29/01/2026 00:45

... "emotional discussion. Shared some tears" ...

Seriously? I didn't know adults outside of the earlier works of Dickens could be that twee. Kids definitely couldn't. They'd get ridiculed to shreds by every other kid.

They did manage to bear up with more fortitude when it was rats being nailed to women's doors, though. Interesting, that.

cocog · 29/01/2026 00:51

How ridiculous. I would love a magical Harry Potter themed forest walk that sounds great. They should be suggested to the forestry commissions in uk for school holidays. People should leave JK Rowling alone I want her to write more books not have to defend herself on social meadow all day it’s very amusing but her talent is being wasted.

user405927 · 29/01/2026 07:29

Can’t wait to hear which of JK Rowling’s views @JesssIsCrazzzzzydisagrees with. I love learning new things.

These people are nutty.

I suspect they just go along with second-hand online inaccuracies about JKR.
No-one is prepared to go against the grain and look into what she actually said.

That would be awkward and unpopular and stigmatising in a milieu where JKR is Bad Full Stop.

There's a lot of it about🙄

RoyalCorgi · 29/01/2026 10:19

I find the idea that some parents are buying and selling second-hand Harry Potter books and merchandise as a way of avoiding giving JKR money hilarious. The woman has a fortune of nearly a billion pounds. She makes millions of pounds every year from the Harry Potter franchise - the books, the audio books, the films, the merchandise, the West End play, the Harry Potter studio, not to mention the forthcoming tv series. Do you think she's going to notice, let alone care, that some people are buying the stuff secondhand?

I agree.

There is a group of people who simply accept what other’s tell them and never check or analyse original source. I cannot imagine just repeating tropish takes just because you don’t care about the accuracy.

She is also subjected to the Bananarama approach of vilification. It wasn’t so much ‘what’ she said, but the way she says it.

And of course, she is mean to those who abuse her and other women and girls. Most typically she reacts to her abusers but those vilifying her can never answer why they support her abusers over her.

And fair enough too, as there is no good enough reason for them to do this.

It also doesn’t even make sense.

Because those children are going to continue reading her books because their parents got them the books. They are not going to care about their parents political views, they will though read the books. And continue the chain to the next generation.

I think I may have done the impossible and found an even stupider attack on JKR

She also failed to opt in to tax doge her income taxes.🤷‍♀️

But the publisher and merch people may be upaet as there was a drive to legislate on paying IP rights (like play/listen £ for music) on second hand goods.

I personally do not support J.K. Rowling or her views

Her view that women should be treated with dignity and respect
That everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, but that men should stay out of women's spaces?
That you cannot change sex?
That you should be free to wear what you like?

What are her actual views, with the quote, that you don't support?

Thankyou! A lovely new acronym to add to the collection. TGD2S.

I am thinking of a t shirt saying:

TGD2S

if you have to ask it’s a hate crime

Except obviously I will employ someone to sort out the lettering and justifying stuff. I’m a creative, not an artisan.

But she's a witch! Everyone knows she's a witch, burn her!

hellowhaaat3632 · 03/02/2026 20:53

Her haters basically can't find anything on her, so it drives them mad 😂.

JanesLittleGirl · 03/02/2026 22:35

Obviously, everyone should hate a woman who survived an abusive relationship, wrote a series of books that got 2 (and counting) generations of children actually reading, followed that up by writing a series of popular adult books, makes no attempt at tax avoidance - let alone tax evasion, and, to cap it all, directly funds Lumos and Beria's Place along with mahoosive contributions to other charities and good causes. Burn the witch.
