Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is this is the stupidest attack on JK Rowling yet?

Canadians’ eagerness to please has left them hopelessly vulnerable to the #BeKind mantra.

As a result, they sometimes do and say some very silly things. For proof, see the story this week about the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, whose members have issued a tearful public apology – for organising a “magical-themed forest walk” inspired by Harry Potter.

Trans activists were horrified, because Harry Potter was created by JK Rowling. So, to avoid causing them further trauma, the walk has been cancelled. At an emergency meeting, Brennan Bastyovanszky, a park board commissioner, promised to “do better in the future”. Later, his colleague Tom Digby tweeted: “Apologised to TGD2S [Transgender, Gender-Diverse and Two-Spirit] community after emotional discussion. Shared some tears. Disavowed JKR.”

You'd consider that an attack?
Ok

Well to some of the TRA words are actual violence so, as you can’t presume that posters are not in the trans community, you may have just committed GBH. Remember. Words can hurt

inigomontoyahwillcox · 14/10/2025 07:14

I’m sorry by nothing less than the staff of Vancouver Parks & Recreation being paraded through the streets naked whilst having “shame” yelled at them a la Game of Thrones whilst they self flagellate is acceptable.

TBH, by the sounds of it, they would be perfectly willing to do it. Jeeeezuz - they are utterly pathetic.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 14/10/2025 07:17

I wonder if that gives insight as to Canada’s ridiculous descent into gender woo?

Knowing as we do that the playbook is to latch on to a legitimate marginalised group and appropriate their reparations?

Canada has some really dark, recent history for treatment of indigenous peoples. Perhaps their desire to make amends for that leaves them vulnerable to exploitation by the TRA mob?

Ffs, i'll never understand how people got to be quite this fucking pathetic.

They are allowed and supported to be.

A little like two year olds having a tantrum and instead of being firm but fair and chivvying them to get up and move along so the food shop could be finished, we threw Haribos at them, wept and cuddled them and abandoned any further shopping trips incase of further upset.

Blimey! Can you imagine being so petty as to make that decision?

Brings to mind one of my favourite series though, Parks and Recreation. Off topic but well worth a watch.

This sounds like an episode of a comedy show

It’s an old article, before JK was verboten. But funny nonetheless https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/no-harry-potter-no-profit-for-indigo-1.591735

I suspect HP is still selling well in Canada, regardless of the hand-wringing.

That is quite funny…blaming Harry for the loss more than thanking him (or rather, his creator) for allowing them to turn a profit in previous years.

Parks and Recreation is a sit com!

edited to add you clearly know that! I’ve got jet lag so I’m not with it!

Waitingfordoggo · 14/10/2025 09:38

When you find yourself at an ‘emergency’ meeting where tears are shed over a magical woodland walk, you surely have to ask yourself just how privileged your life is.

I can just imagine his face,

Sadly though the NBC crowd would thoroughly approve.

Did you see last week's Saturday Night Live Dobby sketch?

borogovia · 14/10/2025 10:06

I'm surprised they were allowed to do this in the first place - a kids' organisation I know tried to do a Harry Potter event and got a cease and desist letter from Warner Brothers. Had to rebrand as witches and wizards.

FranticFrankie · 14/10/2025 10:15

"Tears were shed"
Sorrow or laughter??
They're a pathetic bunch, totally in thrall to TRAs

I got the impression from the Canadian link that this event was a specific ‘thing’, and that at least part of the organisers reasons for scrapping it was that it would financially benefit JKR (some sort of licensing/royalties) and therefore might contribute to funding ‘anti trans’ (sic…obviously pro women’s rights) legal cases.

We have the pub on knoydart cancelling a Harry Potter themed party - guess that’s a pub to avoid then

because someone says JKR is transphobic and no one engages their brain - just say oh yes must be true then

You'll be unlikely to stumble into it by mistake, given where it is.

I can imagine that Sparkles bloke trawls the internet to find events to complain about.

Shame that the owner capitulated.

IwantToRetire · 14/10/2025 01:21

So you think the most rude thing you can say about someone is that they are female. Or worse still that female genitalia is the worse thing.

Do you really think that being female is really the worst thing that someone can be.

What a sad state of affairs on a women's rights forum.

I did apologise 🤷‍♀️

But I don't agree.

Why should 'the c word' be the worst word we can possibly say? It isnt just saying that someone is female. Why is it so much more offensive than anything else? Why is it so unladylike to use it? That, to me, is internalised misogyny and I don't buy into it.

Im reclaiming it.

However, I will reconsider its use here in future.

But please don't tell me off for my choice of words on a bloody feminist discussion forum.

@AstonScrapingsNameChange I use the C word too- very sparingly, but I do use it. I also use prick, dick, bellend and ballbag- probably a lot more than I use the C word. Either way, the person in question is being compared to genitals- and I think both types of genitals are a bit ridiculous. I call people arseholes too and everyone has one of those.

I believe it is licensed from the Harry Potter people. It has run in other countries.

Two spirit is a native American thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-spirit

"There is no evidence that ‘two-spirit’ ever meant trans before 1990.
In Smithers’ 14-page article he mentions, 28 times, reasons not to accept that ‘two-spirit’ means trans, eg: ‘scarcity of evidence’, ‘methodological difficulties’, ‘over-use of a single undated, unpublished source by someone not known’, ‘motivation of political activism’, ‘problematic’, ‘questions can be asked’ ‘historians are suspicious’, ‘was this really proof?’ ‘controversial and difficult’ ‘historians have good reasons to reject such assertions’ ‘unsupported by evidence’, he warns against ‘upstreaming’ ie interpreting the past through the concepts of today’, ‘historians analyse more robustly (than LGBT activists)’
He concludes that ‘two-spirit’ meant different things to different people, with no proof it ever meant trans. If ‘two-spirits’ existed, we would have known about them based on what else we know – he knows the evidence well. He wants more research and collaboration between different types of researchers, showing he is willing to work with others, but perhaps also that others should consult historians before leaping to conclusions. He asks us to listen to native ways of interpreting the past and not impose modern or foreign interpretations onto it.

So it seems that ‘two-spirit’ has been hijacked by the trans lobby, embalmed in the abstruse language of scholarship by trans-funded gender studies departments, and carefully planted to pretend that trans was an accepted native American idea."

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2025 14:39

It really does. I lived in Canada for many years, had a Cree in-law. This is not a real thing. I mean, it is true that people call themselves two spirit now. It's like calling yourself non binary, it just says "Look at me" or "see, trans has been forever" but mostly "I am more special than you".

But then altering language to build a false narrative which "queers" history and reality is what they do.

I'm not telling you off.

I'm expressing an opinion. This is a discussion forum.

The purpose of an insult is to compare the person to the worst or most ridiculous thing.

I am sad to think that anyone thinks that female genitalia would be included in that.

But then I am prejudiced and happy to call someone a dick head or cock head etc..
