Has banned women and girls over the age of 12 from participating. Thoughts?

I caught that while browsing the news online. It was, of course, in the Daily Mail who thrive on hyperbole. I thought when reading it, "At least they're leaving Meghan alone for once", but, no, they were not as I saw scrolling down.

It's not my business but Islam decrees men and women's sporting events should be separate. There's nothing to stop Muslim women doing one at another time if they want.

Given the current climate, I can understand this being enforced for the charity run. They don't want women and girls harrassed along the way, a group of fit men will be safe.

Well, let’s just lock women up altogether, so then they’re totally safe? What pandering nonsense. So glad the public is waking up to these issues.

If they don't want women and girls to be harassed then they should take action to remove men committing harassment not ban women and girls from taking part

Most do know the rights they could have.
Especially the ones in england. They just don't want what you want.
Most don't want to free mix and be around men all the time.
Most muslim women aren't as uneducated and as stupid as many of you think they are

What all 2 million of them, spoken to them personally have you, I'm starting to suspect your male because you're going to an awful lot of trouble to make a case for keeping women in muslim communities isolated from the culture of the host country.

Bumdrops · 12/10/2025 14:13

Hadmysay · 12/10/2025 14:09

You are not as liberal as you think trust me.
As we've seen with the comments about the "poor uneducated muslim women"

No one is suggested being indoctrinated / discriminated against / oppressed is an IQ / education thing ..

it’s a power and control thing !!

I am really getting convinced that you are male - your blindness is bizarre or disingenuous

connie26 · 12/10/2025 14:15

This is so worrying. Sharia law is growing rapidly in the UK.

Yes, pandering doesn't work in the long run. And people are SO waking up to it.

To the posters who don't believe the race is discriminatory
if they had instead had a mens race and a separate under 12s children's race but no women's race would you consider that to be discrimination or not

Edited

Not necessarily.

I don’t know why the op has picked on this particular event from a single mosque. There must be events similar to this one up and down the country involving many cultures and faith groups. We know absolutely nothing about the whys and wherefores of this run. For all we know it may have developed from a men’s scripture study group (please forgive me if I use the wrong terms. I know next to nothing about the Muslim faith). What feels discriminatory is OP’s picking on this group and I am starting to suspect their reasons because this spotlight could be dangerous for this group in this political climate. Leave them alone.

Exactly you've agreed with me, why are these girls excluded from this event if they can wear a hijab and run?? Perhaps the men are threatened by being beaten by a woman and the shame of it. Muslim girls are culturally oppressed, in summer these 13 year olds are made to wear trousers or tights and be hot where as the boys can wear shorts and t shirt. It's plain wrong, defend it all you like but it's not a culture that works in the UK. An argument that a white bloke (actually you didn't state his race even) once shouted at you, not that you even heard him, when you ran doesn't defend a whole culture of oppression. My child can go out and compete in sprinting as she can wear appropriate clothes, wearing trousers and long sleeves will affect timings. She can wear what she wants in summer to be cool, her friend can not. Any park run wont exclude based on age or sex, all proper athletic events have women's, men's, girls and boys events slightly different distances based on ages. So why does this event not allow girls over 13 to do it but it let's boys? There is no defending it. Yes we might have a few idiot middle aged white blokes out of the 67mill population but our whole culture isn't treating women like second class citizens. But you carry on defending young girls being opressed in the UK in 2025.

Yes we might have a few idiot middle aged white blokes out of the 67mill population but our whole culture isn't treating women like second class citizens.

No it just brainwashes them into wearing leas clothes for the male gaze, that they need to do horrible somewhat even violent sex acts in the bedroom for their boyfriends and that sleeping around is liberating.
Fact is some muslim men can be problematic like many men from any culture but so can yours

However a British judge recently ruled that burning the Koran was not illegal because of UK freedom of speech laws.

Well the second one did, on appeal.

First one, not so much.
In fact, it was said (paraphrasing) the fact the man ran back for a knife was proof of how heinous the crime of burning it in the first place was.

It does seem, going by some of the cases I’ve followed on FWR, the lower courts have more activist type judges, and then you get the adults back in charge in the higher courts.

Hardly a surprise to anyone who has the slightest knowledge of Islam.

Neither the exclusion of women, nor the fact that girls of 12 years of age are considered 'old enough' for certain purposes.

Repugnant. Backwards. Incompatible.

Yep. And that men can take up to 4 wives. I know someone will pounce and tell me it's so they can marry impoverished widows out of the goodness of their hearts, but that's crap and they all know it. Someone else will also be quick to tell me how men and women are considered equal in the Q'uran and that Islam is a shining beacon of women's education and advancement. More crap anyone? Islam is in direct conflict with liberal Western values, yet ironically it's the most liberal of westerners that defend it to the hilt.

Not a sporting event - a charity / fun run for everyone - other than animals and females >12 years

not a daily mail thing -
Baroness Shaista Gohir OBE, the chief executive of the Muslim Women's Network UK, said the East London Mosque, which is behind the event, was in breach of the Equality Act. - aka unlawful

Pakistanis aren't the only muslims in the uk.
I find it funny how first the grooming gangs were seen as asians, then pakistani now we see muslims as the face of grooming gangs due to media gb news, dailymail etc even though it was mainly one group.
Pakistanis.

The specific and widespread grooming gangs I’m talking about aren’t ‘seen’ as Muslims, they ARE Muslims.

Predominantly Muslims originating from Pakistan.

Pakistani Muslims make up approximately one third of UK Muslims.

I really can’t see the point you are attempting to make.

Please show me where I am defending the practice of excluding women and girls from organised running. I suspect you are responding to what you wish I had said rather than what I have actually said. And for what it's worth, I have had many men try to insert themselves into my running practice over the years, not just the one. You weren't there so how you think I should have felt about this is completely irrelevant.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 12/10/2025 14:18

Hadmysay · 12/10/2025 12:54

Yet I bet you would have a problem with male teachers around your daughters modifying their attire to make things shorter or tighter.
If your daughters male teacher came into school wearing tight shorts, penis bulging, or things hanging out so you could see what he had for breakfast you would have a lot to say. But such is the hypocrisy of a lot of you on here.
This is why I don't get angry when teachers say things like this.

And I would expect those male teachers to be asked to dress more professionally. I have no problem with there being uniform regulations, and with girls (and boys) being told to adhere to them if they take the mick, but the reason given for this should not be because of the effect on male teachers. It's insulting to the male teachers, because it implies that they can't control themselves.

Some muslim women have been oppressed and killed granted the vast majority aren't.
There's women in your culture that are oppressed to and killed too.
And we all live by rules. Everyday.
Most women are happy to live by these rules. You might not like it but that's a you issue.
And every community is conditioned.
Yours especially.
No community is perfect.

Some community's strive to be better, yours doesn't. Your community is inside my community so get use to being asked to do better.

Brainworm · 12/10/2025 14:20

It seems to me that the main objection/ concern about an open to all event excluding women and girls aged 12+ is that we don’t understand the legitimate aim that makes this a proportionate action.

I think the anger is in anticipation/ expectation that the exclusion relates to beliefs and expectations that over the age of 12, running isn’t fitting for women. Or, perhaps, seeing women run will lead the males to have sacrilegious thoughts.

These attributions arise not from racism but from what people know about laws and practices in some Muslim countries. They are horrified that this happens elsewhere in the world but even more so in a country that has the equality act.

Whilst a white/secular led fundraiser would be very unlikely to have the same inclusion/exclusion criteria, there may well be other areas of rampant misogyny and sexism manifesting in other ways. I’m confident that this too would be posted and met with wtf responses. I’m also confident that no one would jump on with ‘don’t forget the misogynistic Muslim fundraiser’ and if they did, they would get strong pushback

You appear to object both to women displaying themselves to the male gaze, and also to them having spaces away from men.

Let's put this another way. Why do you think women might create a private exercise space away from men? And why do you think men might hold a public event in a public park to which anyone may spectate and allow men, boys and little girls but ban any female of pubescent age and over?

That the poor uneducated muslim women need saving like they don't already know the laws of their own religion 😂.
Like most don't actively love their religion
