Has banned women and girls over the age of 12 from participating. Thoughts?

No. It's a race from which females over 12 are explicitly excluded.

I can see the steam coming from their ears as they think very hard to find a way in which this isn’t the blatant discrimination it is.

Greysowhat · 12/10/2025 11:46

Rosscameasdoody · 12/10/2025 11:44

It’s not a mens’ race. Girls under the age of 12 can take part. At 12 they are considered women and are excluded because they are women.

Pretty xenophobic there

Rosscameasdoody · 12/10/2025 11:46

Greysowhat · 12/10/2025 11:43

Daily Mail scaremongering bullshit as usual. Shame on people who post this nonsense. It's a men's race. If a women's marathon stated no men over 12 can run would people be so hysterical?? No they would not.

Explain to me in words I can understand exactly how this is a mens’ race when females up to the age of twelve are allowed to take part ? Females over the age of 12 are excluded for no other reason than they are considered women.

How ? By stating facts ? You’re making excuses for sex discrimination, and pretty weak ones at that. Answer the question, if you can.

Yep. Pretzel twisting, as per usual.

You know what is fucking hilarious about the uproar around this? British men make jogging a bloody hellhole for women. You know how many women are sexually harassed while out running? So theyre upset at the Daily Mail that Muslim women have been banned from taking part, but when women do take part, Daily Mail type men sexually harass them!

"Daily Mail type men sexually harass them!"

From what I've seen there is no difference between them and Guardian readers.

In any event, if you are in the process of being sexually harassed by a man do you stop and ask him which paper he reads?

VexedofVirginiaWater · 12/10/2025 11:48

Rosscameasdoody · 12/10/2025 11:41

No, they’re considered to be women. Which in itself is disturbing.

Yes - that's the point I was trying to make.

They are children and it's part of the fun. The race is for men just as there are races for women where men are excluded. People are choosing to be outraged at this charity run because it's a Muslim event. Xenophobia thinly disguised as feminism

ChelseaBagger · 12/10/2025 11:49

WeeGeeBored · 12/10/2025 11:41

If it’s a men’s race and boys can take part young girls might feel excluded so I kind of understand why all children can take part and run with their dads. - otherwise it would only be boys taking part in the event with their dads. I think I get it. Sort of. It is a men’s race but children are allowed to run with their dads.

Edited

Nowhere is this described as a men's run. It's described as a Muslim run, and right near the bottom of the page it clarifies that it's only open to men of any age, boys, and girls under 12, as though this is reasonable and expected from a Muslim event.

In fact, it's described as an inclusive family event, except the women are are only included as spectators.

HappyNewTaxYear · 12/10/2025 11:50

Hadmysay · 12/10/2025 11:37

. I don’t want muslim women to think they have to accept this and I think it’s up to the rest of society to say “no we don’t think it’s ok to treat women like this”.

But many Muslim women are fine with this because it's their religion. And they love their religion and their lives most of them.
Heck even if you go to certain restaraunts in the uk run by muslims there are seperate seating areas and rooms for women only that many Muslim women want to use.
I understand your concern but I don't think most would want or need your concern

So it’s acceptable to have a significant tranche of women in Britain who are somehow excluded from the rights and freedoms that women in this country should expect to have? You don’t think that Britain itself is being racist by saying in effect that we don’t care about THOSE women, they’ve chosen oppression? You’re getting dangerously close to two tier justice there.

Please could you point to another fun run which has had similar rules, from any other demographic?

What a load of nonsense and whataboutism. I'm a runner, I've never been harrased, when you have earphones on and getting on with your run how can you be harassed. I find running brings the best out of everyone, most people say good morning when you run past them. My child 14 is a sprinter I think it's a real shame Muslim girls do not partake. They have to cover up, it doesn't bode well for running where you get very hot. I've not seen any Muslim girls at any of her running events. Her best friend is a Muslim and she feels uncomfortable going swimming with them in summer because she feels the odd one out as she has to wear a burkini and cover up and they all wear bikinis, the girls don't care but it's the point she feels different. All because they are made to feel shame about their bodies. It's not a nice culture for women.

Baroness Shaista Gohir OBE, the chief executive of the Muslim Women's Network UK, said the East London Mosque, which is behind the event, was 'likely' in breach of the Equality Act.

i don’t think Shaista works for the mail ??

Two things can be equally wrong and disgusting at the same time - pathetic how people are trying to twist themselves into knots to excuse this to be honest.

That’s a reach. If this is a fun run then there has to be a reason for excluding females over a certain age which qualifies for exemption under the Equality Act. I can’t think of a single one. And I don’t know of any other race - either exclusively male or female which allows children of both sexes but bars one sex past a certain age.

Tessisme · 12/10/2025 10:33

Yes, but do they include boys under 12?

True but as someone else said this happens in grass roots football as well.
Sometimes kids will mix genders at a young age then at a certain age they won't

Yeah, there was a breast cancer charity run that was women only.

Were boys under 12 welcome?

Discrimination so should be held to account

That will be on the grounds of safety though. Not because it's considered sinful for women to exercise in public.

Do you think the average slave in Alabama was “calling out” their master? The average serf in feudal Britain?

A) I’m sure most women wouldn’t bloody dare and b) have you heard of conditioning?

Omg your calling muslim women slaves.
How offensive and disgusting.
Moat of the muslim women I know would take big offense to this and have some really harsh words for you

Did it include children of both sexes but exclude females past the age of 12 ? Because if not, it’s absolutely not the same thing, but then you know that.

Pleasealexa · 12/10/2025 12:02

At the heart of the event is our flagship 5K charity run, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to raise funds for great causes**

Except women...can someone who is defending this please explain why women, over 12, are excluded? Why 12? Why not 16 or 18?

If it's a men only race why doesn't it say that?

In sport this happens post puberty - testosterone advantages

what is it about the age of 12 for a charity / fun run ???

to protect girls / women from the effects of testosterone ….. mmm interesting!

Maybe if they do, they'll show the Muslim women they are not alone, and that it's alright to protest against something that is detrimental to them. Show not lecture.

When will some of you realise they don't want or need your help.
Please help yourself.
