Has banned women and girls over the age of 12 from participating. Thoughts?

It's a lot more in your face if you have been living e.g. in Luton for the past 30 years. Some of these things are suddenly becoming apparent to people living in naicer areas.

Absolutely this.

Most religions ban women from doing things. Islam is one of the youngest world religions. Women and men are not allowed to excercise with each other and once puberty hits then the gender segregation comes into play. The reason is modesty in the eyes of god. (I think but a muslim lerson might wish to challenge me).
I am not religious at all but I do read the teachings of different religions as I am curious.
Christianity had various rules about gender segregation in the past. And some denominations still practice it in different areas.
The uk laws have only really changed in the last 150 years to allow women any rights at all.
We and all religions need to go further but its a long process, we are talking about changing 1000s of years of beliefs and millions of peoples views to make changes. Its slow progress and you can see even in saudi arabia there have been some recent changes to allow women to drive for example.
I would say that I lived in the middle east for a bit and there are womens only gyms there, I joined one and it was pretty wonderdul actually. Women go in in their full niqab, take it off and are wearing hot pants and bra tops and doing all the excercise and classes, having a lot of fun and no sweaty men hogging the weights. So excercise itself isnt banned.
I think only muslim women can really comment on if they are happy with the segregation in excercise. But in the uk sports are actually still segregated. We just had the whole issue of allowing a trans man to compete in womens sports. I think we are still happy in the uk to segregate sports by gender. So I cant see the problem you have with this particular event.

It’s a fun run / a charity event
not a sporting event where male testosterone gives unfair advantage and can be physically risky in contact sport ….

obviously that is why sex separate sports still exist - not modesty !! How is that not completely obvious ?

My bad I didn’t know they’d be changing in full public view as part of this race. Easy to see how the two things compare 🙄

Why the snark? I wasn't rude to you.

Lots of religious rules are based around the idea that men will be tempted by young girls and women. Even school uniforms in religious AND non-religious schools. Is it just easier to understand when a white Headmaster from a Christian background says your daughter's short skirt is distracting the guys? Is it more palatable?

Absofuckinglutely not! I would be complaining to the governors if I had an explanation like that from a headteacher. It's not the fifties!

(Edited to embolden the relevant section of the quote.)

ParmaVioletTea · 12/10/2025 11:36

I share your discomfort @DrBlackbird Added to which, I’m increasingly uncomfortable with the open anti-Semitism which goes alongside growing acceptance of Islamist ideas which oppress women.

And yet, Muslim women have as much right to dress as they please as I do. Who am I to say they’re wrong?

Except that they are ….

KarminaBurana · 12/10/2025 11:36

I'm a little concerned by the "what about the Jews?" which seems to be creeping on here.....

WeeGeeBored · 12/10/2025 11:37

Tontostitis · 12/10/2025 08:18

So 12 year olds are women in their eyes. That's grimm

No. On their website they say GURLS under 12.

Hadmysay · 12/10/2025 11:37

User37482 · 12/10/2025 09:54

Look I don’t want to turn this into some sort of muslim bashing thread, I think muslim women in the UK face higher barriers to things like education, work and now to a fun run and I think thats a bad thing.

I think it’s very much to do with patriarchy and very much to do with men enforcing rules women and using their religion as the reason, I hate to see that shit happening to any woman, anywhere. I don’t want muslim women to think they have to accept this and I think it’s up to the rest of society to say “no we don’t think it’s ok to treat women like this”.

If they had left it open to women and no woman wanted to run thats one thing, specifically telling girls and women they can’t run and lets be honest, because it’s indecent, is another thing.

. I don’t want muslim women to think they have to accept this and I think it’s up to the rest of society to say “no we don’t think it’s ok to treat women like this”.

But many Muslim women are fine with this because it's their religion. And they love their religion and their lives most of them.
Heck even if you go to certain restaraunts in the uk run by muslims there are seperate seating areas and rooms for women only that many Muslim women want to use.
I understand your concern but I don't think most would want or need your concern

Itsbecomingdarker · 12/10/2025 11:00

Yes I had the same too in the Woodlands area of Glasgow, when I was younger. I was groped walking to work by a man outside a Mosque. I reported him to the Mosque and they weren't very nice to me. Fortunately, not all Muslims are like that.

Sorry you went through that,@Allplayedout and @Itsbecomingdarker. I had the same when travelling in Muslim countries, and I’ve heard the same from many other women. You just expect it there. Also in parts of London. Worse when it’s where you live, though.

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 12/10/2025 11:38

What's the old adage? 'When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.'

The cognitive dissonance of the left never fails to amaze.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 12/10/2025 11:39

WeeGeeBored · 12/10/2025 11:37

No. On their website they say GURLS under 12.

So presumably if they are over 12 they aren't considered to be girls then?

ChelseaBagger · 12/10/2025 11:39

Hadmysay · 12/10/2025 10:53

It would be great to see this dragged through the courts if the organisers try it again next year.

Some people are never going to be happy.
The vast majority of muslim women wouldn't care

As I see it, there are two subtly different issues here:

  1. Muslim women who want to take part in this one event and are not allowed.

  2. Other British citizens who don't want to live in a society where this is considered acceptable or normal.

The exact number of women within the first category doesn't impact how I feel as someone from the second category. We're back to the n+1 argument (how many women need to be hurt/harmed/upset before something is considered a problem? However many you find, it will always need to be more)

Wheresthebeach · 12/10/2025 11:41

Yet another example of the misogyny that's taking over...there is no excuse for this.

Rosscameasdoody · 12/10/2025 11:41

VexedofVirginiaWater · 12/10/2025 11:39

No, they’re considered to be women. Which in itself is disturbing.

WeeGeeBored · 12/10/2025 11:41

Pleasealexa · 12/10/2025 10:58

It isn't a men's race, just girls over 12. The video shows younger girls running.

We need to safeguard women's access to sports and events. Barring women shouldn't be allowed in the UK.

If it’s a men’s race and boys can take part young girls might feel excluded so I kind of understand why all children can take part and run with their dads. - otherwise it would only be boys taking part in the event with their dads. I think I get it. Sort of. It is a men’s race but children are allowed to run with their dads.

Hadmysay · 12/10/2025 11:41

Sickleg · 12/10/2025 10:01

Who’s up for CRASHING this race? Walk or run it. I don’t live nearby or I would.

I don't think many of you understand this event will just be a charity run in a massive park that will only take up a fraction of the park.
You might not be able to find them because there's tens of thousands of runners in that park on a weekend.

No. It's a race from which females over 12 are explicitly excluded.

ThatSpryShaker · 12/10/2025 08:37

You know what is fucking hilarious about the uproar around this? British men make jogging a bloody hellhole for women. You know how many women are sexually harassed while out running? So theyre upset at the Daily Mail that Muslim women have been banned from taking part, but when women do take part, Daily Mail type men sexually harass them!

What, women out jogging are being harassed by exclusively British men?

Greysowhat · 12/10/2025 11:43

Daily Mail scaremongering bullshit as usual. Shame on people who post this nonsense. It's a men's race. If a women's marathon stated no men over 12 can run would people be so hysterical?? No they would not.

KarminaBurana · 12/10/2025 11:43

Imagine this: St Anselm's Church is having a fun run in a local park in aid of their charities. It'll be a great day, all welcome!
No females over the age of 12 permitted.
Would that be ok?

Bluefloor · 12/10/2025 11:43

Wow, I genuinely thought this was the usual headlines that when you actually look in to it is a twist of the truth. But I’ve checked the actual website of this charity run and it’s there in black and white. I am shocked that people on this thread are even trying to justify the exemption of women.

It’s not a mens’ race. Girls under the age of 12 can take part. At 12 they are considered women and are excluded because they are women.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 12/10/2025 10:05

How is that supposed to work, 2 objects occupying the same space at the same time?
If a liberal, tolerant, pluralistic society plays host to communities that not only reject its values but actively practice customs that undermine them, how can they coexist within the same national framework?
At what point does pluralism collapse under the weight of irreconcilable worldviews?

They can Co exist.
Muslim have their communities and rules you have yours. Their rules mostly affect their people not yours.
They are muslim. This is a muslim event.

It's not "scaremongering bullshit". Things like this are a gift to the Daily Mail and folks like Farage.

this Is what is states in their website. Open to everyone: runners, walkers, and children (girls under 12 and boys of any age), plus family and friends as spectators or volunteers. Whether you’re taking part in the 5 km run or cheering from the sidelines, you’re welcome!
