Radio 1 DJ and noted jurist Greg James has given his verdict

I bought Greg James’ new book, hoping for some entertaining fluff along similar lines to his likeable breakfast show persona. In a chapter on ‘not growing up’ he is talking about accepting new ideas and then - of course - weighs in on the FWS Supreme Court decision.

“It’s a backwards step and another reminder that we all have to try and understand the world as it changes”.

I honestly can’t believe he thought it was worth wasting the paper to print this. Is it too much to ask that people who don’t have the slightest bit of understanding about something could just shut up about it?

Greg absolutely loves Gregggg Wallace.

I had to to stop following his wife on Instagram cos she was always wanging on the same. Her first book was a hard read but got through it. The second was even more boring and couldn't get past first few chapters. What's the deal with everyone thinking they need to write a book. Think you're a woman then you are a woman apparently. Think you're a writer then you are a writer apparently.

He went to school with Monroe Bergdorf and they are friends so I assume that's where he gets his options from. His wife is similarly captured.

Saves me buying her books then - thank you for the heads up.

Her dad used to be editor of the Guarniad. Hmm interesting…

I think his opinion is probably written into BBC contracts.

Or likely the Beeb screens for affable dumbos to carry out their bidding, and old Greg's DJ booth is suffering from a fair bit of echoing feedback.

Don't you just love being lectured by a man who has nothing to lose? He will never lose a sporting title because someone with an unfair advantage cheats, he won't know the fear of having a man in a dress follow you into a changing room or the indignity of sharing a hospital ward or prison cell with a potentially violent or fetishist man. Men have not suffered the indignity of having their langauge cancelled, e.g the NHS erasing the word woman and referring to us as a set of gynaecological parts, people with a cervix, people who menstruate.

Also, later: "People with amazing careers who in some cases have changed popular culture and garnered hundreds of millions of fans around the world with the things they've created get called out once for something they've done or said and instead of apologising or asking themselves some probing questions, they decide it's the hill they're willing to die on."

I couldn't possibly imagine who he might be thinking of here 🙄

I think this person (love JKR) has asked herself some probing questions and the answer has been that she would rather speak the truth and stand up for vulnerable women, rather than seek the approval of half witted cowardly celebrities with zero talent or intelligence.

I was reading a library book recently where it had a line primly acknowledging how their historical use of "LGBT" was "outdated" and of course they knew the right one was "LGBTQIA+"

I neatly crossed the nonsense parts out and returned the book without reading further.

Not to mention that (a) LGBT should just be LGB; plus (b) their self-congratulatory little comment is also outdated now as well, if they are going by the ever-changing alphabetti-spaghetti lingo. Bigots.

LittleGreenDuck · 04/10/2025 21:34

I knew someone would post about this. I bought his book because I've really enjoyed listening to him on the radio. He comes across as a really down to earth, genuinely nice chap and engages really well with his listeners.

I've now got the ick. What a load of self important navel gazing waffle, with an additional dumping of patronising lecturing. I haven't even finished it yet, but I read the part about the SC judgment and rolled my eyes so hard they nearly fell out of my head. The next chapter mentions female wrestlers and the change in the way they compete in last few decades. The inability to join the dots is baffling.

He's referred to himself as a National Treasure about four times in what I've read so far. I can't work out if he's being serious. I don't know, maybe he should stick to what he's good at. The rambling nonsense which works on the radio just doesn't translate to the written word.

To be fair, I followed his wife on Instagram for a while and she expressed similar views. I expected better from him, but should have guessed 😢

SinnerBoy · 04/10/2025 21:58

National Treasure? I'd never heard of him before this thread.

nauticant · 04/10/2025 22:20

I've now got the ick.

This is me. I only know him from his Rewinder programme on Radio 4 but from here on in if he comes on the radio I'll think "oh, it's that posh bloke who attacks those who hold view he doesn't view as being correct".

Deeprug · 05/10/2025 05:34

As I said upthread, I really had a thing for Greg, but this week, seeing him on everything doing promotion, I've got the ick too. I'm really sad about this. So preachy and arrogant.

ScepticPeg · 05/10/2025 08:57

I saw him outside a TV studio once but bypassed him to get a photo with someone from Shooting Stars 😅 needless to say I will never be buying his book or listening to his radio show

Same here. This is such a shame. I really like him from his radio show and got the book already and just started it. Gone off him now.

LittleGreenDuck · 05/10/2025 09:36

His views on trans rights aside, the book just doesn't work. Rambles on without actually saying much and comes across as trying too hard to be funny. Mostly, he sounds arrogant, smug and out of touch, which isn't at all what I'd have said from listening to his radio show. It's a shame.

RobustPastry · 05/10/2025 09:42

I really dislike him. Heard him be snotty about people who are worried and talk about climate change, on his breakfast show before. Great example to set to kids that it’s ‘boring’ to give a shit about the climate emergency. Luxury beliefs all around with him, it seems like.

Yawhat · 06/10/2025 17:41

He calls himself a national treasure?? 😂

Tbf I think alot of his radio show is due to the team behind the scenes. The podcasts he's done like the cricket and motor racing he has several co-presenters and a huge team behind the scenes. I heard him on the Off Menu podcast, and he soundly like a grump. His tv career never took off despite several attempts. The team on the radio show come up with much of the silliness. And given that R1 is for a "young" audience not sure how much longer he's got a slot, but also I don't a single young person who listens to any radio let alone at breakfast time as they're rolling out of bed for college. Also his response to Jordan North leaving was snooty. Glad Jordan is doing well. The book IS doing well, so the national treasure that is Greg probably expects his knighthood soon.

Deeprug · 07/10/2025 06:37

I used to move between Greg and Scott in the mornings, but will just stay with Scott now. For me it's the fact he thinks we haven't questioned ourselves. The arrogance of it. Yes, we have Greg, for fucking years, and yes, it really, really does matter.

EyesOpening · 07/10/2025 10:50

@DrAmanitaPhalloides what did he say about Jordan North??
I used to listen to Greg when he had the afternoon show but haven't really listened to Radio 1 for a long time now.

DrAmanitaPhalloides · 07/10/2025 15:43

I know R1 were annoyed at Jordan leaving but all his colleagues posted lovely messages and whilst he claims this was "banter" I do think it was a sly dig as Jordan & Chris both ex-R1 hosting breakfast show same time as Greg. (And I do think the Sun are exaggerating with the use of the word "fued")

Tiatha · 07/10/2025 16:11

Never heard of him, what an idiot. I am the same age as him, he writes like he's much older. At 39 it is not bloody difficult to accept new ideas, or it shouldn't be! Sounds like he's trying to take a pop at older women to me. If he is talking about himself that's just sad. I don't feel that my teenage years were conservative and one-dimensional either!

Tiatha · 07/10/2025 16:12

Just to clarify - I'm not saying he writes "like an older person" and that's bad. I'm saying he seems to think older people can't accept new ideas and that that applies to him, not that he's right.

Oh my god could he project any harder. That might be what HE'D do in that situation. In the case of JK she has applied some reason to the question and is trying to protect vulnerable people - just not the vulnerable people he finds interesting or worthy of help.

LittleGreenDuck · 07/10/2025 19:09

He was definitely referring to JKR. The end of the chapter says "Get a new Dobby. Sorry, I mean hobby." 🙄

Yawhat · 08/10/2025 19:46

Lol. Compare JKR's ever-precise, thoughtful language to "get a new Dobby". He sounds like an absolute numbskull.

Grammarnut · 09/10/2025 16:22

I always think using the word 'fuck' in an argument shows the speaker/writer knows perfectly well that they have no argument.
Greg James either doesn't have a clue or just thinks he'll say this because it's the thing to say - just thought about that and both those stances = I haven't a clue.
