Terrible. We need look out for ourselves and where possible other women, given the police seem far too unreliable and there is rising misogyny is various forms- in this case apparently aggravated by racism..

Right, but as Eresh describes above, there's also arousal involved.

I do understand the theories about power etc, I was actually responding to a comment and trying to suggest a reason why some people may struggle to grasp some of the motivations behind rape.

Because to a non sadist, they are baffling.

You were replying to my comment. I might’ve caused some of the confusion as I wasn’t clear enough what I meant. I was talking about aggravating factors (like hate crime ) being applied to murder and assaults too.

I’m “baffled” by people that enjoy watching Love Island

It seems a peculiar choice of word to describe how you feel about rape

Thing is, Sikhs are generally peaceful and integrate well, so the attackers are likely to be staunch racists who don't like anybody that's isn't white. I don't think I've ever heard anybody complain about Sikh immigration because generally they start businesses and work hard.

I doubt that they asked what her religion was before raping the woman. All they would have seen is the brown face.

What’s your point? It was a perfectly reasonable question.

As the mother of a visibly Sikh female child, this has broken my heart. That someone could hate us based on our religion and skin colour so much that they would actively cause us such harm. I wish this young lady well. Oldbury has quite a few Sikhs living there and I can imagine the impact this has had on people’s fears for their safety.

I’m so sorry, it’s awful Flowers

At the risk of sounding naive, rape has always baffled me because I can't understand how violence, assault, and arousal can coexist.

Obviously they do, I just find it impossible to understand. In my understanding one negates the other.

I guess there may be an amount of just inability to understand why?

I always think the rapist is either not seeing the woman as a human just a receptacle (so the violence/lack of consent just doesn't matter to them at all) or they're sadistic and it's actively an aid to arousal.

That's so horrible, no one should have to feel this way. Sending a 🫂

TherapyMe I'm sorry. There are more people who are enraged and upset by this than those who feel hate. Flowers

. Lesbians get raped in South Africa bc they are lesbian (happens here too sometimes, much less but does happen.)

In that case, it's important to recognise the misogyny but also homophobia involved.

The Rotherham victims were targeted partly bc they were white. That's important to know isn't it?

Native American women are very lilely to be sexually assaulted.

Saying there was a racial motive doesn't mean it wasn't misogynistic. It was BOTH.

One does not negate the other.

We have genuine immigrantion problems here, but we also have a racism increase, it's not all reasonable protest. As feminists, we can acknowledge all those facts and oppose all harm to women, while also being aware of aggravating factors.

Edited

This.

FFS the rape happened at 8.30 in the morning. I don't know why that has shocked me so much. Daylight and safety and bad people (men) being inside until much later maybe.

Yes I agree. There's something extra horrific in the fact that this poor woman was attacked during daylight.

I felt the same about this recent multiple rape of a teenager at 7.15am in the morning. Three men have been charged and remanded in custody.

It’s all hate but there is an extra layer to it that must be recognised. If she was disabled and they were calling her names that would add an extra layer to it. There’s nothing wrong with calling out that extra layer.
whats also sickening is that rape alone isnt also regarded as a hate crime against women.
