Stroke 'played no part' in Blackpool hospital patient's death - BBC News https://share.google/E1kG2EjcGHJWiPXvA

Omfg. This is just horrendous. This poor woman. Bled to death on a stroke ward following a sexual assault on the ward. What on earth?

Valerie Kneale, with shoulder-length grey curly hair, wears a pink, lilac and green floral blouse as she is photographed in a garden. She is standing in front of a pebble-dashed house with a white plastic door and windows.

Stroke 'played no part' in Blackpool hospital patient's death

Valerie Kneale's inquest is told she died because of a "forcible sexual assault" while in hospital.

ironic that the webpage of the hospital has "Caring Safe Respectful" as a banner at the bottom of it.

There are two other things you could do. Either start an online petition yourself which other people can sign or submit your own petition for your MP to present which would then need to be sent to the DHSC. And they HAVE to present it (if they are being truly unresponsive another MP can do this for you too but it's unusual).

Petitions - MPs' Guide to Procedure - UK Parliament

Thank you, that's genuinely helpful. I've pretty much giving up all hope of most of my supposed representatives doing anything useful for their constituents!

Pointless. My MP is SNP, they dont do anything at all. Not one response, no action, fuck all. Just collecting a fat salary and posturing away with his pals.

Horrible, horrible story, and if it had happened in say, India, lots of comments would be made about systemic bigotry towards women and appalling standards of medical care and police indifference. Entire conclusions would be drawn about the morality of that country. Perhaps, one should get off the NHS worship and start campaigning for better care and security for women and minor patients.

This is quite disrespectful to the struggles women face in India, distasteful to shoehorn in a little anti bigotry rant using the horrific rape culture towards women in India because of something that happened here. I'd still rather be a woman patient in England than anywhere in India. It can be hard to even get a train in some areas over there without the threat of rape or harassment

I went to find this story on the BBC News App and had to use the search function to find it (presumably it's been filed under North West News) - it doesn't come up as a headline. Shocking.

Truly shocking. Matthew Pover has since been struck off for drunk driving and selling zopiclone. He was the nurse in charge. A person of such bad character should be seriously investigated

verityveritas · 04/09/2025 12:23

Anyone with any medical training should read the responses of the band 5 male nurse. Apparently he didn’t think a post menopausal women bleeding from the vagina was anything serious🧐. I would have thought his answers would have been easy to pull apart. The family have not only been let down by the hospital (understatement) but also the complete lack of justice is an abomination.
It’s absolutely sickening. I don’t know how her family will ever cope or find peace knowing what happened to Valerie. She should have been in a place of safety, she should have been surrounded by warmth, compassion, and professionals helping with rehabilitation and the highest level of care following her stroke.

hamadryad · 04/09/2025 12:23

This is unthinkable. I cannot get my head around any of it. How can they possibly close the case?

Bridget57 · 04/09/2025 12:25

This hospital is near to me. It was previously investigated as the staff had been drugging the patients to keep them quiet. If I remember correctly a couple of nurses received prison sentences due to this criminal drugging of patients and many other staff were involved and aware and received suspended sentences etc one being the male nurse who was in charge of the ward when this poor lady was raped and murdered. I think it was originally a student nurse who blew the whistle on the staff drugging the patients and the appalling way the stroke patients were being treated on that ward. Then health care assistants reported the blood on this poor lady and this same male nurse did nothing about it and, due to this, valuable evidence was lost. This is the same male nurse who was involved in patient drugging. What the heck are the police playing at? They should hang their heads in shame, the least this poor lady and her family deserve is justice.

borntobequiet · 04/09/2025 12:26

This is one of the most awful things I’ve ever read. Dear God.

I've had some brilliant MPs in the past (political party unrelated to effectiveness) and I think it's dreadful for those who lack that, as they can move things along in a way very few other people can when it matters. I also know professionally how much decent MPs care about their constituents and they don't get the credit for that in general, but obviously there are also the ones who don't do the job properly and lack that sense of responsibility.

Bunnycat101 · 04/09/2025 12:33

This is terrible- her family must be so angry. It sickens me that they didn’t even seem to realise she’d been attacked but sadly I can believe it. My mum is currently in hospital and I believe she was neglected on her previous ward. She is now in a terrible state and I think a lot of that is simply down to poor care.

blueclip · 04/09/2025 12:33

Hospitals haven’t been safe for 25+ years.

This is how things are now.

Revolting, disturbing and tragic.

But everything is now like this. We need to wake up. So many things could have prevented this. We now routinely run hospitals with fuck all staff and think it’s ok. I remember being in hospital as far back as 20 years ago and there being a dangerously low number of staff. People go to hospital to get worse and die, not get better. My older (but fine) relative died as a result of a hospital “accident” 25 years ago - she’d gone in for an ingrowing toenail procedure.

PearlClutzsche · 04/09/2025 12:34

Heartbreaking and enraging. A vulnerable woman is raped and murdered IN HOSPITAL and the staff don’t give a fuck. And neither does anyone else, apparently.

I doubt if a loved one of mine is incapacitated and left in hospital I’d want leave them for a minute after reading this.

Horrific.

MySweetMaggie · 04/09/2025 12:37

Absolutely horrific. That poor woman. Nowhere is safe it seems.

advertisingshenans · 04/09/2025 12:37

This is horrific and leaves so many unanswered questions. Why did the hospital dispose of her clothing - should that not have been returned to her family? And really, they wipe CCTV after just 18 days?

An elderly relative of mine was recently on a hospital ward and there was one HCA who was enjoying being really rough with the patients. My relative said that while he was getting dressed, this man was digging his fingers into his back and almost pushing/slapping him about. Both my relative and his son made a complaint and the staff closed ranks. Obviously it’s nothing on the horrific scale of this murder but the closing of ranks is definitely a thing.

I hope this lady’s family fight for answers. I’d support a gofundme to help them do that. It’s horrifying to know that an extremely dangerous sexual predator is walking freely around a hospital.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango2023 · 04/09/2025 12:37

Between this and the same ward drugging patients without their consent to make them sleep. The ward needs closing down.

Missing the point spectacularly, if not predictably. Will you write to Wes Streeting? Actually direct your outrage towards the right targets?

Change2banon · 04/09/2025 12:39

I think this is the most horrific thing I’ve ever read. Thoughts, love and sympathy goes out to all family involved.

I cannot even begin to imagine, understand or comprehend what a man can actually do to injure someone so severely as to cause their death in this way. Absolutely horrific.

It sounds like Valerie's family didn't want to leave her alone on that ward either and it was a small time frame when they were not present that the assault happened. I can't imagine what they have and are still going through.

A relative of mine who was a ward sister for many years recently died and she absolutely refused to go anywhere near her local hospital way beyond the point where she really needed to be admitted as she said she knew how she'd be treated in there. It was heartbreaking. She died in an ambulance on the way to hospital and I'm glad really that she ended up being spared the ward.

The figures in that are terrifying.

There are security teams in hospitals. Is it time for them to have their own police officers.
