Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
cariadlet · 28/08/2025 15:28

That's a big improvement. I hope it's the start of more accurate reporting.

TeiTetua · 28/08/2025 15:30

Well yeah, but the story says "Jurors at Amersham Crown Court were told the defendant, who still identified as male at the time of the alleged offences, would be referred to by their biological sex throughout the trial."

So it's not exactly a major step by the BBC to be calling this particular spade a spade.

Keenovay · 28/08/2025 15:43

Maybe there's a dawning realisation that using female pronouns for the trans criminal demographic is not the best PR for the community.

More seriously, I think the BBC follow the court's guidance re pronouns, hence the apparent inconsistency across different cases.

Obviously I hope that Gwyn is happy, but I do wish people would stop transitioning just after they’ve committed some heinous sex crime.

The cognitive dissonance is absolutely mind-blowing!

They actually said they want to stop trans people transitioning?!

Gobsmacked. I thought that was the worst thing anyone could say or wish for.

Who are these people that want to end trans people's existence?

CaveMum · 28/08/2025 16:11

I came to see if there was a thread about this. Glad to see some accurate reporting, though it's a shame that we have to acknowledge it rather than it just being the standard.

I saw this too. Zero consideration for the child, just hope the rapist is happy. Staggering perspective.

Wonderfulequipment · 28/08/2025 17:13

Not TVP or Harrow school though who both use “they”…

moto748e · 28/08/2025 17:49

I'm sure they do, and have said as much in the last day or so. But it's a rubbish policy: the courts are inconsistent on how they treat defendants, and the BBC, instead of clarifying, repeat what they say.

That whole thread is WILD.

Just saw a brief report on 6 O'Clock News. Picture used was very definitely a beardy bloke.

WarriorN · 28/08/2025 18:28

The linked report was updated an hour ago, did it have this picture then?

BBC calling a spade a spade this time
FuzzyPuffling · 28/08/2025 18:28

Gwyn is a man's name, isn't it?

Candlesandmatches · 28/08/2025 18:39

Not quite the same reporting on the Catholic shooting perpetrator in American. Bit more vague.

Yes it is

FabulousFryingpan · 28/08/2025 18:41

Yes, @FuzzyPuffling , Gwyn is the male form, and Gwen the female, traditionally. Wonderfully ironic, isn't it?

FuzzyPuffling · 28/08/2025 18:48

Might as well have gone for "Bob" then!

ArabellaScott · 28/08/2025 19:24

'James Bubb, who now identifies as a woman named Gwyn Samuels, groomed one of his two victims online before sexually assaulting her when she was just 12 years old.
The 27-year-old, from Chesham in Buckinghamshire, was also found guilty of raping a woman he met online while posing as a 16-year-old girl.
He still identified as male at the time of the offences and he was referred to by biological sex throughout the trial at Amersham Law Courts.'

It's odd that the BBC are misgendering him, though. Why is that?

My thoughts with his victims, I hope they are able to heal, and have all the support they need.

potpourree · 28/08/2025 19:32

That text is really odd! As if there is some woman called Gwyn Samuels and he's copying her life.

Farkin' 'ell. It's like they can't hear themselves.

Yes, this.

I thought exactly the same. Not sure I see this as much progress as such. BBC just following the courts lead here.

They haven't used male pronouns for the Minnesota killer who "identifies as female" since 2020 (quoted from Minnesota court records).

ArabellaScott · 28/08/2025 19:50

What, they'd prefer them to transition beforehand?

Well that’s about the size of it, isn’t it. The married TIMs often seem to copy their wives’ clothing, hair and jewellery choices.

It’s all just pretending to be someone else.
