Figured it was my turn for once!

Plus this way I beat the rush to the bar.

Now I must return to the previous thread to relocate my Tunnock's secret stash.

Serve yourselves until the bar gerbils arrive.

My father spoke fluent Urdu, plus Welsh and Mandarin.
I can really only do English, and sometimes that's garbled.
I'm very impressed by the multi lingual Bluestockingers and am feeling rather inadequate. The blue gerbil probably sums up how I feel!

That’s an unusually diverse selection of languages!
I too am not a linguist - school French, and the same scientists’ Greek as Magpie. But I am fascinated by words and etymology.

Swashbuckled · 21/08/2025 22:44

I did French, Spanish and Latin at O’ Level. Preferred Spanish to French. But liked Latin the best; felt more like decoding.

MyrtleLion · 21/08/2025 22:44

I once attended a two day Learn Ancient Greek course when I was 17. I got the hang of the letters and sounds quite quickly so they moved me from the beginners to the improvers on day 2, which had apparently never happened before.

I admit I am more about the decoding of language than speaking or reading it. More of a, oh that's how it works, than that's how I converse.

I learned a bit of Welsh e when I was married to a Welshman. I love how Welsh changes the consonants, like C to G, depending on what came before. Like a or an, it's obvious when your hear it.

Lovely to see you, Swashy, albeit a bit wet. You're such a great sea captain and very patient with the gerbils. They are learning a lot and look up to you with great respect.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2025 22:47

I hope there’s more of what Swashy’s got, looks delicious.
I've got a secret stash of Lindt Les Grandes - it’s about 1/3 roasted hazelnuts and 2/3 dark chocolate. It’s good, but the chocolate could do with being darker. I expect the Bluestocking has some 85% chocolate studded with crisp hazels or almonds, but does it exist outside?

Swashbuckled · 21/08/2025 22:50

@ErrolTheDragon I don’t know if they exist elsewhere. But I suppose you could take a bite of dark chocolate and an almond and allow them to mix into a paste in your mouth. Sounds rather nice.

I’ve tried that (obviouslyGrin) - it’s good but somehow not the same as a bar with the nuts embedded.
however, a mix of dark chocolate, icecream and nuts will do very nicely.

That Lindt Les Grandes is so good - yet I agree that the chocolate could be darker. The nuts, though ... delectable.
It would be possible to eat a piece of chocolate and follow it with an almond ... the almond would need to be roasted ... maybe a touch of salt, too ... moose need salt, you know. But even nicer is the sensation of biting into really good chocolate with roasted nuts already in the chocolate.

swoons

Sorry @ErrolTheDragon ... I realise I've just been drooling so much over the thought of roast nuts embedded in chocolate that I repeated exactly what you said!

Finally caught the tribble haggis / haggis tribble that was cornered in the billiards room. Bessie has done genetic testing and it turns out it's 67% haggis 33% tribble.

It's also thankfully sterile.

I'm thinking of calling it a Haggle and this one is called Hettie.

I'm unsure whether to take it home as a pet or Sunday lunch.

That may be one of those things you have to create at home. Quick chocolate melt in the microwave mix in your almonds etc leave to set. Of course it will take multiple attempts to get the quantities in the right ratio, in due out will be such a hardship eating the not quite right ones!

Except for the salt…I like the Kind dark chocolate & nut but I’d prefer it without the salt

Your dilemma reminds me of the Dish of the Day at Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

It should be worth the experiment, and I could calculate the speed of light at the same time as my microwave doesn’t have a rotating turntable.

A Haggie is for life, not just for Burn’s Night.

Swashbuckled · 21/08/2025 23:31

Well, I’ve just had some dark chocolate whilst sitting up in bed with a gin (having polished off my ice cream).

Spotted a few flakes/bits on the bedding and picked them up so they didn’t end up melting onto the sheets. Popped them into my mouth and couldn’t work out why it didn’t taste quite right and the texture was a little too firm. Didn’t swallow.

When I’d gone downstairs for my chocolate, I’d got a treat for the hound. Broke it up for him into little pieces and fed him on the bed.

Certainly not a patch on Lindt.

Well written, Myrtle. I completely agree.

Sorry about your bedtime experience with not-Lindt, Swashy.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2025 23:36

Yeah, I’d pass on the dog treat too.
(could have been worse…Shock)

BeLemonNow · 22/08/2025 00:34

Blimey you are a clever lot. I only speak English and Squeak. I've been working on my chicken, but can't get my head around some of the pecks.

BeLemonNow · 22/08/2025 00:39

Oh dear I've turned up late again and everyone's asleep @Boiledbeetle seemingly only sleeps upright!

I miss the late lamented Topic bar. A hazelnut in every bite. In these days of shrinkflation that would probably mean a total of two hazelnuts. But I still miss it.

Igmum · 22/08/2025 08:21

Thank you Fuzzy, the song ‘What has a hazelnut in every bite?’ Is now settled as my ear worm of the day

I have to shamefacedly admit that I'm not too fond of neeps, so when I have haggis it's with champ and scallions.

DH enjoys a haggis pizza.

DeanElderberry · 22/08/2025 09:25

Bessie is highly skilled and Glaucus looks much better but I think carrying chocolate in case of emergencies will be a thing from now on. I like the posher ranges from both Lidl and Aldi, no palm oil, all cocoa butter. There's a mint crisp and a fruit and nut and a bubbly one . . . .

I like turnips/neeps, a winter treat, but prefer sausages, black pudding, white pudding to haggis. Sorry.

FuzzyPuffling · 22/08/2025 09:28

I had vegetarian haggis once. It was quite nice.
