Figured it was my turn for once!

Plus this way I beat the rush to the bar.

Now I must return to the previous thread to relocate my Tunnock's secret stash.

Serve yourselves until the bar gerbils arrive.

Old Alvin, the submersible, had only one arm (the new one has two). I have no idea why the people who designed it thought a second one wouldn't be handy. We spent about 20 min trying to pull a bungee cord (which go quite stiff at 2000 m below sea level) over the lid of the sampling box so our samples wouldn't float out on the way up. There was swearing, quite a lot of it.
The more arms the better, in my opinion.

That was an unexpected glimpse into your life outwith the Bluestocking!

I’d like to caveat the ‘we do not care’ on the door. While there are many things we sensibly Do Not Care about, there are others we care about a lot. Fellow residents, obviously. Tea….I could go on but I’m overdue my second mug.

MarieDeGournay · 21/08/2025 09:51

I'm recovering from general feeling-awfulness including being knocked out by a migraine yesterday, and I find a new thread and it started off a bit.... dystopian??

Boily in rags, gerbils fighting, the Capybara Cops called, something blue with too many legs covered in chocolate, putting limits on how much We Care..😦

I think we need an Intervention by our Therapy Squirrel -
'And how does that make you feel?'

Or perhaps we should just let the disturbances of the late night move dissipate like mist in the light of the new(ish) day?

Glad you’re recovering, I’m sure there’s a gerbil on the ready to take your order for a soothing beverage.

Boiledbeetle · 21/08/2025 10:03

Boily in rags

Rags! Rags! That's my best withered old haggis thank you very much.

Rags! hmpfff

Ok, ok, ‘dehydrated sheep stomach’. It’s a look only you and Lady Gaga could possibly pull off.

"Yes, a statement saying We Do Not Care is pretty contentious," moose opined from her permanent plinth pedestal** place in Pedantry Corner

That was surprising!

I went to sleep in the Sanitarium and woke up somewhere new, yet exactly the same…

DeanElderberry · 21/08/2025 11:18

It is comforting to see from the images that the application of chocolate seemed to reduce the bluey's superfluous legs. If that continues the bluey itself might eventually dissipate into a happy cocoa-scented mist.

It is less comforting to get a glimpse of what is happening in that lab,

DeanElderberry · 21/08/2025 11:29

Was the creation of the bluey a misguided attempt to build a blue animal that would need the maximum number of stockings?

AsWithGlad · 21/08/2025 11:47

I'm another who found herself magically transported from yesterday's Bluestocking venue to this new one with no effort on my part. Thanks to all Bluestockingers and support animals for this.

The power of women, eh?

I don't do that much fieldwork anymore, sadly. I used to tell my mum only once I was back and then not in detail what I had been up to, it was a lot easier before smartphones to disappear for a few weeks without anyone expecting to hear from you..
I'm off for ten days in October though with some Danish collaborators, very much looking forward to it. I hope the North Sea behaves itself during that time.

Igneococcus · 21/08/2025 12:28

Poor Marie, migraines suck, I hope you get better soon. dp is currently also hiding in the darkest and quietest space of the house with a bowl by his side.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/08/2025 12:29

Phew - I made it! I dozed off in the corner of the old thread and woke up just as the gerbils were wheeling out the last of the Tunnock’s tea cakes, so I hitched a lift in the van with them. Being driven by gerbils was …. an experience! Three of them in the footwell operating the pedals, one steering and all the rest shouting advice. We went round one roundabout three times, before they found the right exit.

Thanks Igneo, and I keep meaning to go back and save that site that you posted a while ago, showing atmospheric pressure, it looks v relevant as I seem to be worse when there's high pressure.
I love the word HectopascalsSmile
I need to take it easy for a while.

Good luck on the North Sea in October, perhaps you could earn a bit of extra money by dumping dodgy mobile phones for people?😁

Fair enough.

Ah, I see you've found your way to the tea room. Might need some bigger cups, though - I think the gerbils have unpacked Marie's model-making equipment by mistake.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 21/08/2025 14:26

Ah, Marie has joined us in the tea room, looking a bit peaky but improving, I hope. Gerrymander wants to show you a new word, Marie, which some of the gerbils discovered on an outing to another thread yesterday. It's 'boustrophedon'. Enjoy!

They developed their driving skills after reading how Terry Pratchett’s nomes coped.

See, this is why a library accessible to gerbils is such an important part of the Bluestocking.

Meanwhile on the subject of trucks I’m waiting in one called Dotty in a car park…’single sex space!Grin

SionnachRuadh · 21/08/2025 16:02

I know what boustrophedon is!

Though I haven't had to use it myself. The nearest I've come to it is dealing with texts in Yiddish, where it's not so difficult to learn Hebrew script, but reading everything backwards is quite the adjustment.

Igmum · 21/08/2025 17:36

Well belated congratulations to the happy hogs 🍾🥂.

Also, does the wonderful Bluestocking include a Terf Tardis? I’m up to my eyes in work at the moment and could do with another week. Or six.
